I want to start making 30s and 40s style dresses, the kind with the butterfly collar and cap sleeves that cinches at the waist and goes out in an A-line. I am going to wear them with my combat boots (it's not cowboy boots, but combat boots here on the Eastcoast) Does anyone know if these are called "shirt-waist" dresses and where I could find patterns and vintage style material for cheap?
Shirtwaist dresses have a seam at the waistline joining the skirt to a bodice made like a shirt--that is, it buttons in the front. It could also have a small zipper in the left side or the placket of the bodice could extend into the top of the skirt section, to make putting the dress on easier.
