| I'm a 53 year old retired hairdresser. I had to learn how to do finger waves to pass my state board exam. I don't think they require that now! My best advice to you would be to try to find an old cosmetology textbook. It should have an explanation with pictures. Another piece of advice would be to find an old hairdresser and have her demonstrate the technique. Plus, she would love it! Good luck! Melody |

I can tell you that many hairdressers working today (at least in my area) do not know how to do it. I called around all over town a few seasons ago when I wanted fingerwaves for a wedding. Nobody could do it.

I'm not sure but I think when I did them we just used a little dippity-do hair jell on wet hair then laied a finger at the top of your head and combed the hair to the front then placed your finger under that line and combed the hair to the back and just kept repeating that I think it's for short hair. Once the hair dries you can comb it to make it softer looking. What do you have to lose try it & good luck.

Hope I'm not too late in responding, I am a hairdresser/salon owner in Calif...our state still requires them for certification...they are the base of hair movement...if you master them, you can do anything.... start with wet hair, well conditioned, and use a slippery gel. Create a partline from the apex of the head (highest center point) down to the center of the eyebrow. using the large teeth of a standard comb, direct the hair into a "c" shape. Using the small teeth of the comb, recomb the shape. Use the back of the comb to really flatten the hair. It should look smooth, like glass. Place your pointer finger of your left hand where you want the shape to ridge. Use the large teeth to comb below your finger in the opposite direction. With skill you can get large ridges by inserting the large teeth at a 90 degree angle about 1/2 inch below your finger and push up, place your middle finger on the bottom of the ridge to hold while you comb the next section with the large teeth. It just keeps repeating. It sounds confusing, just picture waves, "c" shapes, divided by ridges.... I love doing them...you can separate the hair and do flat pin curls around the nape, this works great for longer hair. Good luck, I suggest you practice on a "doll head" (thats what we use to teach students). Maybe you could contact your local cosmetology school, they certainly will have doll heads, and students just dying to get their hands on you! Hope that helps!

| I haven't done finger waves in almost 20 years (not since my exam). Go to a beauty supply store and buy a mannequin head, a good gel, comb, and spray bottle and practice. |
