My wonderful hubby bought me a Singer Treadle model 115 circa 1919. Under all of the grime, it is in fairly good condition, decals still have color to them and the treadle runs smooth... some rust spots though and the wood cabinet needs a lot of work. However; it is missing the bobbin case and I am having a hard time finding one. Should I hold onto this baby in hopes that someday one will turn up, or should I let go of it (relinquishing it to the local Re-Usit shop where some Amish or Mennonite woman who might actually have another one with the case could buy it)? Does anyone know where I might be able to find the bobbin case?? the part number is 55651... any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

You might try www.vintagesingersewing.com they list parts for old treadle machines. Hope that helps.

Oh dear, I'd hang on to that for sure...it's those pieces I've let go of and then the "answer/part" turns up in a while and it's hard to recover from the realization that if I'd been patient and persistent, the solution would present itself...definately look around for a while. I have a story about looking for a commercial sewing machine for about a year, was quick to realize I'd have had to have a degree in machinery and so on to figure out which one to choose and then mega-bucks to pay for one, as there were thousands online, finally gave up on the idea, then low and behold, Miss Wilma posts that she has one for sale...life has many serendipitous moments like that, so I hope you'll have the same kind of wonderful experience with your treadle machine.

I got my first treadle over the summer fo 30 dollars, and it cleaned up nicely, I did not even know it had the decals or brass plating. It came with the puzzle box and all the little goodies in that. My New Year's Resolution is to learn to use it well, I am so glad an article is coming out in the magazine. Perfect timing!!
Forget buns of steel, I'd rather have buns of cinnamon!

I went to a sewing repair/fabric store yesterday and visited this old fella who had lots of old stock....some of this stuff is still around...and in fact treddle machines (the head)can usually be serviced by the new repair guys as well. I know of one or two in my area who will work on them...if you need info, send me an email and I'll be glad to pass along the info. Treddle machines are fab....I have my grandma's...and although it is currently in storage due to space issues, it is one of my prize possessions....lumpy/bumpy cabinet and all....I can still see her sitting there, with me on her lap, with her helping to guide my tiny little hands as we worked on our first sewing project....simple white pillow cases. Grandma gave me my spark for needlework, and for that I am grateful. Someday I'm going to get the treddle cabinet refinished, but the rest of it is going to stay in tact as is where is....including the little piece of metal that covers the bobbin opening that has always been wonky because it never has fit right...but that singer hums along....and it will always remind me of her.

Patricia, I think we're kindred spirits...my experiences with my grandma were much as you describe yours being, and my gram taught me to crochet and embroider too, her quilts and handwork inspired my love of sewing and needlework. I love my grandmother's generation...I think that's why I love this site and the women who embrace those values. Thanks so much for sharing about your sewing machine and your grandma.

Thanks for all of the input ladies! I decided to hang onto it for a while, as Chandra said, there are many moments of serendipity and I'm hoping for one here. Patricia and Chandra, love the stories about you and your grandmas and learning on the treadle. I can't wait for the next MJF issue to see the article! Patricia, I will email you, would appreciate any contact info you might have for your shops/repair guys, I checked all of my local ones and none have the part or seem to know how to get it. When I searched google, a hit came up for one that sold on ebay, but the auction is past 3 months old, so I couldn't see the details, but that leaves me hopeful that one will eventually turn up. I did a lot of work on cleaning it up yesterday and just couldn't bear to part with it yet... looks beautiful (even in though the cabinet needs a lot of help) sitting in my studio right under my quilt wallhanging.

| I recently bought a NEW treadle machine by Janome, it fit right into an old cabinet that was given to me. It was $200 w free shipping and I love it. Havent used my electric one since. It has all the features of my other machine, and I think it ha better stitches. |

Hi Beth,
I'm glad you heard back from Cindy so fast. She is a great person and a wonderful and very reasonable resource for some hard to find parts. You might also want to check out treadleon.net for a lot of info and stuff about people-powered sewing machines. TreadleOn people are super helpful if you have any problems or questions, too.

I found mine at our local thrift store! I also nkow of one at our local antique mall. Not sure if it is a singer though
