Hey fellow tatters! I thought it would be fun to start a thread about tatting where we can show off our finished work, get help with work in progress and share patterns-
Currently I am working my way through the Celtic Tatting book- It takes me a couple times with each pattern-
What type and size of thread do you prefer? Do you needle or shuttle tat?

Hi Alee, I was wondering what is tatting? It sounds fun!! Hugs, Channah

Channah- do you have MaryJane's Stitching Room book? There is great information in there about tatting and even instructions on how to needle tat! That is how I learned. But the basics is that it is a form of lace making like crochet in a way and like knitting as well. You use either a shuttle or a needle and tie a basic knot on the needle then draw the thread through to create a backbone for the knot of a "curtain rod" as I sometimes think about it.
Here is a picture of my first ever celtic knot- not the most shapely yet but it will get better! BTW I was using embroidery floss- all 6 strands- because I was out of crochet thread. I am going to do another with crochet thread...

Whee! Tatting thread! I haven't tatted for some time but I made tatted edging for my MJF denim jacket and around my sisterhood badge. I'll get some pictures of them soon.
My daughter, Krystle has a blog about her tatting... she also just started to do some book reviews on tatting books, for those interested...

I love, love, love to tat and I would love to have some new patterns. I needle tat but I have tried shuttle tatting. I prefer to needle tat. The heart is beautiful. [^

I can needle tat (never tried the shuttle). I'd love to see some beginner patterns. Maybe this thread (get it, thread!) will motivate me to go for my tatting badge.

Oh one thing about the above tatting shuttles are they are clear you can see how much thread you have left and since they are large ; you don't have to fill them as often However you do need a steel crochet hook to do the picots with hugs sheila

Alee My husband's great Aunt taught me to tat she was such a sweet lady tiny thing too. She taught me with a shuttle I cannot use a needle. I find it clumsy some how I guess it is just what you get use to try the shuttle ; you might love it. hugs sheila
