Hi Farmgirls, Do you crochet? If so when did you learn and what do you like to make? I love to crochet and learned when I was eight. I love to crochet scarfs, dish rags, blankets and can't wait to learn to make shawls, baby booties, baby blankets and so much more. I am hoping to open and esty site this fall and will sell a these things. I can't wait!

I have to add... I just received my extra wide scarf from Channah. It's a lovely soft gray yarn. SO pretty. I can wrap it around my shoulders or wear it outside and toss it up over my head in this never ending WA wind and rain. She did a LOVELY job!!!
As for me, I have been crocheting since I was a kid. I typically do afghans, scarves, lots of hats, dish scrubbies, potholders, dishcloths and my NEW found ability... SOCKS!!! SO excited about that one, because I have always wanted to learn to knit socks but just couldn't figure it out. The crochet socks are super easy. Of course, I need to finish the pair I've been working on for a month. I get distracted. =)

I love to crochet. I was taught at school at the age of 6. Mom could knit up a storm and was very very good at that (and more crafts) except...crochet ! She never got the hang of it, how often she tried lol. But I can crochet from a "simple" doily to a shawl, from a dishcloth to an afghan. Almost every pattern under the sun  :)

I love crocheting! Oh so relaxing!!! :) I think I've been crocheting since I was 9, but never really got avid until the last two years or so. I love to crochet just about anything. I am dying to learn to crochet a baby sweater....someday..hehe
Channah--I got the baby bib and beautiful card you sent today. Thank you so much. It was just wonderful of you and I can't wait to get to use it!

I love to crochet. . . never could get the hang of knitting.
Love to create anything from baby items, scarves, sweaters, shawls etc.
Thinking of giving the "socks" a try. Have a couple of good patterns for these, just need the right weight yarn.

I just learned to crochet in 2009. I was a quilter, my mom a crocheter; when my dad passed away last year I had the overwhelming desire to have mom teach me her craft. I love making hexagon dishlothes and I finished a large granny square afghan for my bf's bday! Now I am starting a ripple afghan in Syracuse blue & orange for my son. I JUST CAN'T STOP!!!

I love to crochet, working on a new afgan right now. I learned when I was young and relearned when I was 18 and pregnant with my first son. I would go to this little yarn shop and the woman that owned it was kind enough to teach me her ways. I loved going there to sit and crochet with her. I will never forget her. Not sure where she is today I am guessing in a better place.

I was engaged to my b/f, now my DH, when his mother taught me to crochet.She sat right beside me til I got the hang of it. I've made afghans, even one to cover a double bed, made baby sweaters, baby blankets,bibs, baby booties, all kinds of doilies,but my favorite is dish rags for now. nice to read all the other posts. :)

Everyone has such great stories. I learned to crochet around 7 years old and did off and on projects through the years. When my children were born I picked it back up again and haven't stopped. Most of the time I make things just plain ole' double chain. I can get in a "zone" and not have to look down and just crochet away.....it really calms me.
I read in a magazine once about this designer that can crochet 90 doubles in 60 seconds. That's all I need......a challenge. I've tried and tried and I've only gotten up to 75.
One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt." |

I don't know at what age I learned. I always remember having a hook in my hand, when my mother or grandmother was crocheting, however I am sure that I was not actually stitching:) But I don't recall not knowing either. But I still love it and have since picked up knitting and I have started learning to tat. It too calms my nerves:)

I have been crocheting since I was 8 years young and still find myself picking up a hook when I need to just zone out. I always test my yarns that I make with a quick ctocheted sample - I can determine if I am on track or if I need to make corrections. I am excited to see crocheting is no longer considered the poor relation to knitting - the designers are really stepping up and making some out of this world patterns for crocheting. I can knit but trust me after about an hour I would love to poke someone with those points - give me a hook any  day.

I crochet, too. I was taught by my neighbor who was in her 70's. I was in my 20's. I learned real fast and have made afghans for everyone in my family. More than 20 I guess. Plus scarves. That's all I can do. I love to crochet. It's so relaxing. And I love all the colors and how they all come together to amke a nice warm thing to cover up in.

I used to crochet when my children were small. I made sweaters and hats and blankets. My Mom taught me when I was a teen. Recently I started crocheting again. I have made fingerless gloves and cowl neck warmers and earflap hats that I sold at a local co-op. They all sold! Now I am starting my spring/summer line of sun hats. I have even made a couple of wide brimmed gardening/sun hats from rafia. Real hard to crochet with but amazing results! I have just received an order for sun hats for triplet girls.

I learned to crochet when I was very young. Don't remember exactly when. When I was 12 I crocheted myself a jumpsuit with long pants. By the time I finished I had outgrown it. My Mother's Mother and my stepgrandmother both helped teach me how to crochet. They were both left handed and I am right handed. My crocheting looks upside down until you turn it over. I love crocheting it is easy to just zone out when you crochet. I am now teaching my sister how to read directions. She can do the stitches but no one ever taught her how to read directions. Mostly now I do dish clothes, and bags. I love to do bags. I am going to crochet a rug for my porch out of the string off my hay bales as soon as I have enough. I really want to try doing a skirt but I can't find one that I like.

We probably all have this memory.......As a child learning to crochet, I would single chain a whole roll/ball of yarn and stretch it across all the rooms of my home. When my daughters were learning to crochet they did the same thing (without me sharing my story). I loved it! Those super long chains were like a web all over the living room.

My grandma's best friend taught me when I was 13 and I haven't put a hook down since. From baby items for my kids and now to my grandchildren. I think I have made 100's of barbie outfits. Afghans, hats, doilies, christmas decorations, I love them all and love to try new things and new yarns, just to feel the different textures puts me in heaven.

My mother taught me when I was about 6. I remember doing little things for my dolls and barbies. I did some stuff for 4-H when I was about 12 or 13, and did a lot of "snake" afghans. lol My mom decided all the afghans I started and didn't get more than 8 inches or so done on would keep lots of snakes very warm.
I put it down for years, and then when my middle boy was tiny I picked it back up. And now I am completely "hooked"! I've been doing a lot of toys and amigurumi (japanese style small toys, tight stitches, big heads), dish clothes, hats, scarves, and mainly smaller projects. My blankets tend to take a month+, and I'm working on my first garment, a sweater/cardigan for my hubby.
I've taught a few friends and my 8 year old boy wanted me to teach him. He is doing great!
edited to add: I am also saving baling twine off my hay. I hadn't thought of a rug. I found a great pattern for a bag, thought the twine would make good market bags.

I learned how to crochet when I was about 7. I did the same thing you did Catherine! I would take my Nana's yarn and see how long of a chain I could make. I finally for real learned how to crochet when I was about 11. I usually only crochet afghans and scarfs, but I would love to start making dish rags.
Channah, what kind of yarn do you use to make dish cloths? I have Lily's Sugar and Cream yarn, and it says that it is super absorbent and has been used for that purpose, but I'm wondering if there is another "special yarn".

Channah, thanks so much for your Peaches info. I purchased a huge cone of Peaches & Creme "Spring Meadows" from Walmart awhile back. It is the same 4 ply made for knitting machines and weaving looms. It was cheaper per oz. than the smaller amounts. I didn't care that I would be making bunches of the same colors as I change my dish cloth daily and have shared them with others. I have tried to get others to throw away their sponges that hold moisture and therefore help bacteria to grow. Thank you for this topic.

Most everyone on farm girls can knit or crochet. I have been doing baby blankets, scarves, and clothing from a child in crochet, through my kids, now the grand kids so it has been a while it is a good winter thing to do it helps keep your lap warm  as you work. Lilly
