I was given my first copy of MaryJanesFarm magazine on Thanksgiving Eve 2009. It was the Glamour Camping issue. I sat and read it all after the kids went to sleep and felt like I had found a sister. Every single page spoke to me & that has never happened before.
I have since ordered the backorder bundles & most recently the Wheat Budget Mix in the darling bag.
I have wanted to post so many times but life has not allowed me to do it until today. I think if I wait till I have time I will never do it.
Our stats: We are a family of 4. Mommy and daddy and 2 little kids. Our son is in kindergarten. He is the exact image of his father, heart, soul and features.....a great gift to give the world. A gentleman and a thoughtful very grown up little man with a twinkle in his eye. Lately one of the last things we talk about at night is getting chickens. He has a coop planned out in his head and says that is what he'll dream about.
Our daughter is almost 4. She is a striking young girl in many ways. She's learning everything along with her brother, almost as tall and loves to dress like a gypsy. I used to dress up as a gypsy or a fairy for Halloween so it makes sense. Our Zoey has type 1 diabetes. She's been getting finger pricks and 5+ shots a day for 11 months. She changes her clothes to make her feel good, when she is high she feels irritated and restless....and then she'll change clothes to try and find a perfect feel. Lots of layers and textures. I know that when she comes out with something different on that I need to check her blood sugars. The combinations are wild but they make her feel better.
We just celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. I wish we'd met years ago but so thankful we finally met.
We have a mini horse named Bella, a little old Pomeranian, one inside cat and one outside cat. We live on a 2 1/2 acre plot of flat land with mountains in the distance. A decent sized garden and dreams of chickens and rabbits in the near future.
I know that this is a long first post but it has to be done this way. I just have to get it out there! It took days to write and I know it will be days before I can sit down again and read any replies.
I hope to meet some farmgirls in real life soon.
I am looking for good quality seeds.
I need help deciding what kinds of chickens to buy, what ages to buy and where to get them?
I have received the Minnie Rose Lovgreen's Recipe for Raising Chicken's and feel blessed that I only live a couple hours away from Nancy who helped Minnie publish her dream. Nancy was a joy to talk too and I wouldn't have met her if it wasn't for Mary Jane's Dec. magazine and that lovely article.

Hi Stephenie,
Welcome from Montana. My sister lives in Seattle and my dad in Arlington, so I get out your way every once in awhile. You're in a very pretty part of that state. We too, have buff orpington chickens and barred rocks and a couple "novelty" birds (an American and a rose-breasted leghorn). LOVE our chickens. My girls raised Havana rabbits for a while for 4-H and I have to say, one of my favorite breeds because they're not too big and are super loving and gentle!

Welcome all the way from North Georgia, Stephanie. It sounds like you know what you're doing with the diabetes. She sounds adorable. And full of life. That's great. And your son sounds like a future farmer. Hom nice. I also have Buffs and LOVE them. I want some Welsummer hens again. I had 1 but something got her. They lay beautiful reddish eggs. And very well mannered, too. But so are my Buff girls. And my roo is great, too. Hop on over to the Barnyard section for more about chickens.

Howdy from Wyoming! Welcome to Farmgirls. Prepare to be Inspired! I love silkie chickens. They are such sweethearts, are good brooders and don't take up alot of space. They give small eggs. they are very affectionate birds and are easier to tame with children.

Thank you ladies for the kind welcome. It's fun to get the emails letting me know someone wrote to me.
I am so excited to hear about your chicken's favorite qualities and eggs. Just the kind of info I need.
I am going to make a "mother" sourdough starter. Our little store has the King Arthur bread flour I read about on here.
I have been making tons of organic choices and thinning down purchases at the local grocery after reading Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I will go to the book section of this site and see if other's have posted about that.
I am thrilled to find farmgirls are so close to me!
I really want to get into seed sharing. I don't have a local co-op to buy from but I will try and branch out and find what I am looking for. Would there be time to still buy through the mail?
There is so much info on here, it is awesome and a bit wild. I bet everything I want to find out and try is in here somewhere, just have to search.

Thank you so much ladies. I have had the best time the last couple days peeking around, doing searches on things of interest and getting answers.
Last night I made corn bread in a cast iron skillet from 1891. Wagner's 6 1/2 inch skillet. Made in USA!
I am thankful to have the skillets and will use them often.
Now I will search for how to season them. There are directions stamped into the bottom of it but I can't make out all the words.

She however has found her own way of dealing with her illness. We all must find our own fix for not even medicaians are right for all persons with the same illness. The best to you. Lilly
