Our feed supplier recently switched from recycle-able paper sacks to bags made from #5 plastic, which we can't recycle where we live. So, last night I used one (actually a bird seed bag, for a trial run) to make a very sturdy market tote, complete with a pretty picture of a cardinal. I'll post pictures to my blog soon- stop over and check it out! Let me know what you think.

hey Shari, I am looking forward to seeing your completed feed sacks... I have seen a few re-purposed totes made from plastic feed sacks....hmmm, maybe I should try to make an apron from one! oh, P.S., I responded on my blog to you about the fish fabric pillow. I bought the fabric in the fabric/quilt section in the Ben Franklin store the next town over. >^..^< Happiness is being a katmom. "I've never met a sewing machine I didn't like!"

I made hanging upside down tomato planters last year. They worked great. I am going to just reuse them until they fall apart!

emsmommy5, how did you do that?! Do you think it would work for strawberries as well?

Sharon, that's exactly what I was thinking! Nice and sturdy for a gardening apron. :)

I will try to figure out how to post pic's. But here's the basics on making the tomato bags.....
I used plastic weave sacks that my wheat came in. I sewed a seam with the sewing machine to make a tube. At one end of the tube, I sewed it closed with a loop of, well mine was fabric, but anything that would hold up the bag would work, THe loop is sewn into the seam.
At the other end of the tube, I made a hem and put a piece of string through it so it would gather closed.
Then I flipped it upside down and filled the tube with dirt part way. Put the tomato plant in and a little more dirt to cover the root ball. I use some dish sponges, cutting them to about 4x4x1 1/2. Slit the sponge so it goes around the tomato stem. The sponge protects the stem. Gather up the tube so it covers the sponge. Gently flip it over and hang from the loop.
Then, because I am kind of lazy... I cut a small slit toward the top just below the loop. This way I can stick a 1 liter plastic bottle in the bag. (the bottle has the bottom cut off, the lid on, and a couple of holes poked in close to the neck) Every day, I would just go out and fill up the bottle with water to water the tomoatoes.
THey worked surprisingly well. Cheap. Recycled. I plan to make more this spring. I didn't do strawberries. But it would work as well. I might try that because I have oodles of strawberry starts to transplant.
Do what you love, love what you do. |

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone, especially about my blog, Kelly! Would anyone like to try a bag swap? (bonus: it would count towards a Shopping Green Badge.)

| I was inspired by your bag and made one yesterday. I made it from a Strategy Horse Feed bag, it is so cute. I only had 1 so it has the brand on one side and the ingredients on the other, I am going to start saving the bags so I can have a 2 sided one. I made mine small, not as wide as a regular reusable bag, I thought it would come in handy for those small trips to the store. Thanks for the great ides, my mom wants one now too! |

What thread are you using for these? I don't know if my sewing machine would be able to sew through our feed bags.

I know someone posted a link to a company where you could send your feed sacks to, but, I, for the life of me, can't find it!

| I used regular all purpose thread, it worked just fine, I did reinforce the bottom stitches. My machine went through fine, the plastic is slippery, so my stitches aren't the straightest! |

We have used our feed bags to wrap the outside of our coop, like tyvek on a house, to help keep the rain and snow out and off the wood. I have also used them to make totes, they are wonderful!
