Or, for that matter, what boys' names appeal to you?
I am having a second little guy - due end of July - and I am having some trouble deciding on a name. My first one is named William, and I love it - we either call him Will or William. I want to name this second one Arthur and call him Art, but my husband doesn't like it at all. Even though I own 51% of the stock in this little guy (okay, 100% at the moment!) , I am going to see if there's anything else out there that I like as well. Any ideas?

My sons name is Samuel, we call him Sam. I also have a Matthew, called Matt, and a David, Dave for short.

My son's name is Jason Matthew. I really like old names like Zachary, Asa, Daniel. So since we only have one child, my animals get all the cool names!! Good luck with your little one! Hugs and Happy Easter, Luzy

When dear other half and i have a child if it is a boy he will be Marshall Keith. They are both old family names. Marshall is my maternal grandmothers last name, i have her first name. Keith is my dear other halfs middle name.

| Our 5 year old's first name is William,then Daniel.My big boys name is Scott Alan. I had River picked out for Dan but the kids all said that was too hippylike! Liam was one.I like Alaska names too.Know someone named Denali,O'rion,. My friends son is Sage. Good Luck choosin'. |

I'm married to Steve (Stephen but pronounced like Steven) and our son is Steve (Stephen). If we had a 2nd boy, his name would have been Joseph Emory (after his 2 grandfathers).
My favorite boy names outside family names are Luke and Cameron.

My two oldest boys (the homemade ones that I got to pick names for) are Corey and Casey. The adopted ones are Justin, Travis and Dalton. I feel lucky that my younger boys have names I like. They could have come with names like Beevus or Elmer I suppose. (my apologies if any of you have sons that you named Beevus or Elmer..heehee)

I have an Adam. The first man, our first.We wanted a name that couldn't be shortened. His middle name is Beevus-Elmer. NAW, just wanted to joke with Aunt Jenny! His middle name is Walter, after my father.

We have Joel William and then we had a girl and then our third child came and if she had been a boy we would have named her Elijah because it is the mirror image of Joel in Hebrew. However, we had a girl and so we named her Elia, which is the feminine form of Elijah. Now fourth child is coming and we have decided on Nathanael Luke.
(Now each one of our children has l's in each name--Joel William, Caitlyn Elise, Elia Noelle, and now Nathanael Luke. Our last name has 2 l's in it. We didn't do this on purpose until this pregancy it donned on us that they all had l's so that kind of guided our decision on naming this one, not that anyone will notice it but us, but that's okay). Caitlyn was very close to being a Cynthia. I had NO idea whatsoever how popular Caitlyn had become or I would have choses Cynthia, but oh well. I like Cailtyn and we call her Cait all the time so it works. Plus, Cynthia wouldn't have had an 'l' in it, so guess it was good we picked Caitlyn. I chose Caitlyn because I had originally liked Katherine, but wasn't fond of the way it gets shortened to Kathy, but I love Kate/Cait. So, I chose Caitlyn. I have a niece named Katie Lynn and found out later that sometimes my sister calls her "Katelyn" just as a pet name.
Boys names that appeal to us are: Elijah, Owen, Samuel, Luke, Nathanael, Calvin. My brother's name is Clayton and he always gets compliments on it wherever he goes. Most of the men on my dad's side of the family have very regal names like "Charles, Phillip, Edward." And on my mom's side of the family they are umm....a bit different: "Elvert, Albert, Jerry, Joe." Albert is Albert Felix and it's a name that has been passed down over the years. My fil's name is Ralph Leonard and he is named after his dad. I'm happy to say that my mil didn't want to continue that tradition and chose Jonathan Andrew for her firstborn, my husband.

My boys are Nash, Luke & Will. DH says they have "cowboy" names. They all share a middle name, Dalton, after my maternal grandparents. I like the names Clay & Seth too.

I named my son Benjamin Andrew.... He is 27 now. He loves his name Ben. It's a strong and gentle name that suits him.
I will tell you that the Germans give their children long names.. Mine for instance is actually Carla Louise Elisabeth.. That way, the name used can be any of the three.. You might consider something like that.

Oh, thank you ladies so much for the ideas! They have given us some great ideas -- it's so difficult for me to pick out a name for a baby/boy/man - one that he could be comfortable using in whatever career or life path he follows. Thanks to you all, we have actually been able to have come civil discussions about a name, rather than me just being so crazy-stubborn.

I love all these names and stories, no kids here yet but love to pick out and hear other people's name combos. I love Benjamin Andrew (Benjamin is the name of my boyfriend killed in car accident when I was 17). I have two nephews Bryant Abbrey, Braxton Augustus and Brayden Alexander is on his way, all in the same family.
I love the name ideas you can get from the name polls on the baby.com site.

| When I was pregnant with my son I had a dream he was a boy and that his name was Eli. A few days later an ultrasound confirmed my intuition and I had to convince my husband and daughter of the name. A tradition in my family is to give the son their mother's maiden name as their middle name. I'm the only one out of my 4 brothers and sisters to carry on this tradition. My son thinks it is neat that we have the same "middle" name. |

dorothy .. i surely do love your wonderfully unique name choices .. we named our daughter WEDNESDAY .. yep! during the hippie 70's years .. and she has always ADORED it.... Said it always made her feel special and unique. EVERYONE knows who WEDNESDAY is. She was very much into the 'arts' (actually took BALLET as her major in both high school at the Baltimore School for the Arts ... and at colleget ... but chose to be a LAWYER .. and she has loved her name wherever life has taken her. I love the name DENALI .. sooooooooo ALASKA .. wilde and wonderfully advnturesome sounding!
I also love biblical names ... but first choices would be those very different names!

i also love it when a child receives a 'family' name .. even if it is not the 'most modern or wonderful' .. i think it pays a tremendous tribute to the child's 'roots' and to the person for which he/she was named.

i just had to add in that my niece who is supposed to be born on may 28th is going to be Denali Rose. Her mommy is home sick for alaska and wanted her daughter to have a name that would conjer up the image of the wild and free wilderness even though she will be born in the "wilds" of Chicago

| Our 3 month old little boy is Jackson Thomas. First name for his great-grandfather in England and middle name for my dad. We thought Jackson was unique, but...IT'S NOT! He'll be one of 50 Jacks/Jacksons in his grade at the rate that I'm meeting baby Jacks these days. But we love his name dearly and love our Jackson even more. Wouldn't change a thing. (Also love the E names: Ethan, Eli, Elliot, Evan...) |

| My son's name is John Phillip. Great-grandfathers, were John and Phillip. Grandfather's name John and Phillip. Father's name John Phillip. My favorite uncle's name was John and favorite older cousin who looked out for me was John Phillip. (everything is for a reason.) My daughter is Caroline Marie. If she had been a boy I had picked out Benjamin Caleb. I had never even thought of the name Caroline until I was wheeled out of delivery. This was 1968 and 1971. I was surprised the first time someone asked if I had named them after the Kennedy children. Never crossed my mind. Good luck! |

Just had to chime in here, I know name picking can be so intense. When I was in my child-bearing years, (many, many years ago) it took me forever to pick names. I would sound it out like it was being said at a graduation, because they usually say your full given name when handing out diplomas. Or I would imagine it on their name plate at work. Then I would make sure that it had a nice rhythm for all the names together. Then I would play with the initials to make sure no one could create an unpleasant nickname and then I wanted it to be something they could grow into and not have to carry around a child's name all their adult life. When we were married, my husband and I decided that our first-born children would have our middle names to carry on. And lastly, like so many here, it was really important to try and find names that would have a some Biblical background and meaning. And none of this happened in this particular order, these are just all the things I wanted to take into consideration before deciding on a name, though. (Now you see why it was so intense for me? Whew!) And then there was the added fact that I have 5 brothers and my husband has 3 so we wanted to make sure not to duplicate any of those names either. Neither of our sides of the family had names that we wanted to consider; Helen Ida, Mary Olive, Edgar Bruno, William Ray - love their names as our parents, but not for our children.
So here is what we came up with for our three boys: Michael Wayne(husband's middle name), Robert Anthony and Daniel Todd. I like the traditional and simple names. We thought for sure that they would all be shortened, but we always called them by their given names and that's what everyone else did, too. With one exception, we liked the name Robert because for some reason I had decided that I wanted a "little Bobby." Well, we tried to call him Bobby and we were told, at the ripe age of 3, "My name is Robert, not Bobby!" So we didn't get our little Bobby. :o(
I have to tell you though, when the boys got to high school, they did get nicknames. Can you guess who "assigned" them their nicknames? Our oldest son! During his freshman or sophomore year somehow he was called Crazy (I don't think I have ever really been told the real reason and probably a good thing), so he decided that each of his brothers should also come to the same high school with nick names before anyone else had a chance to name them. So, out of habit more than anything, he always called our middle son, "boy." "Come here, boy! and so on." So that is what Robert became - my little Bobby was named, "Boy." And then our youngest son somehow acquired the nickname, Dizzy.
And to this day, if we run into kids who went to school with them and tell them who we are, we tell them we are "Crazy's mom or dad" and then they know who we are, not by their given name -their nicknames. It's amazing. :o)
So long story, short - all that hard work and thought and care into picking out just the right name boiled down to, Crazy, Boy and Dizzy.
OH, we have a daughter, second in line, and her name is LeAnne Renee. My middle name is Lee.

That is so funny about "Crazy, Boy and Dizzy!!!" It makes my name-picking load seem a little lighter...
All of you have such wonderful, meaningful, fun and funny stories to share about your guys' names - thank you so much. We have decided on a middle and, not surprisingly, a last name - middle name is my maiden name, which is the same for my first little guy. So both boys will have the same middle and last names, carrying on both my husband's and my family names. This is important to me for my father. There are only two girls in my family - nobody to carry on his name at all...so this is my way of honoring him. He's the greatest.
Everyone in my family has long names. My name has four parts - it's a good thing I've always been called "Libbie" my whole life, and I really like it, but it's also nice to have a more "substantial" backing name, I think. I'd like that for my boys, too. Okay - not FOUR names, maybe, but a first, middle and last.
