It's been dry and beautiful here this past week. No rain since Sunday. Hubby was home so he got the tillers fixed!!! He did a few rows yesterday for me. And I did a few too. So I got peas planted yesterday! Then today I went back over the ground real good and made 3 rows. I got my onions and taters planted! I am so happy now. We have always tried to plant potatoes on Good Friday but anymore we plant when we can. Like whnen it's dry and the tiller works. But now I feel like I have a jump on things. It might rain this weekend so that's ok now. I want to get some more cabbage and broc.
Has anyone else got their taters and onions planted yet?

I was able to plant them a few days ago along with spinach, beets, radishes and I am going to try carrots again. Can't wait for the plants to start popping through!

I'm so happy for you Kris!, can't wait to go work in the dirt! Happy Easter!

| We put potatoes out on St Pattys day here. I have leaf lettuce, vadalia onions and potatoes in but today brought rain so the broccoli and peas need to be put on hold a little. Happy Easter |

I have my whole garden now planted here in South Louisiana. Put tomatoe cages out today (37). 15 green eggplants, bell peppers, cucumbers, yellow straight neck squash, 3 rows of Blue Lake green beans, 1 row of butter peas. All plants looking good since Monday. Seeds not up yet, suppose to rain this weekend, so next week I hope they will be up.

Bonnie, wow, that's great! I have to wait til May now to do most of the gardens. We'll probably get some more cold here. But at the local hardware store they already have plants like tomatoes and cabbage and herbs and flowers. She usually doesn't get alot of stuff til the beginning of May. So it sounds like you could have several plantings each year there.
Carol, I want to plant carrots again too. I did a few years ago and got about 10 pints canned. I need to make the bed deeper so they might grow a little longer.
Annika, your turn shall come! You'll be down and dirty pretty soon like the rest of us. Ours is still just a little wet but I tilled and left it to dry a few days. I hope we don't get the flood like we did last year and I lost half my big garden. My granddaughter and I planted about 100 pounds of potatoes and they all drowned. I had to replant peas and beans too.
Smiley, where do you live? That's good you already got yours planted. I have a cold frame I planted spinach and lettuce in about a month ago. I am going to get more broccoli and cabbage too. I did start a flat of heirloom cabbage but it needs more time.
Hapy Easter to ya'll too. It's going to be really nice here.

It rained here early this morning, and I went out and checked on my plants. They all looked good and none got knocked down with the hard rain. Suppose to be in the high 70's this week, so I hope the seeds will come up.

We are hopefully going to get things going here today. Hubby was going to turn the garden this morning but he might have to drive me to church later. Had to take some medicine this morning that I really shouldn't drive on. We bought some new organic dill seeds yesterday at the Good Foods store. It looked interesting. Also so far we know we are going to have tomatoes (several varieties), broccoli, snow peas, beets, potatoes, pumpkins, possibly melons and watermelons. In the herb garden we are having several varieties of dill weed, oregano, basil, rosemary, and we are looking for some nice mint. Also my hubby bought cactus seeds, we are going to try them this year. There is probably more that we will try this year but this is all that's coming to mind right now. I'm getting excited for this growing season. Last year I didn't get to enjoy my garden as much due to the surgery and the recovery. Oh, we also bought two different kinds of Marigolds that we will plant around the garden's border.

Bonnie, I'm glad your plants are all ok. Sometimes when our corn is really tall we'll have a hard rain with wind and it knocks the corn down to the ground. But they always stand back up in a few days. It's so wierd.
Lainey, I hope you get all you things plnated soon. You're not too far behind us here up there. I went and got some rosemary, parsley and mint the other day. I went ahead and put them in pots til I can get my herb garden ready. I want all kinds of herbs.
And my cabbage babies are looking pretty good. I might go ahead and get a few rows ready for them this week and put them out. I'm just afraid slugs will eat them or the chickens will. They are small and so fragile right now. But I think once they get in the ground they will take off. I have over 70 but that's alot of planting work to lose them.
Happy planting, ya'll!

Gena, I am just 26 miles south of Chattanooga, Tn. But I asked my hubby where Canton is and he said it's right before Atlanta which is just 1 1/2 hours from me. Not too far away.
I think I am going to till some more rows and plant all that cabbage I've started from seeds. I might have to get some row covers. Plus all my 115 tomato plants are getting very tall. They look like they could be planted anytime now. But it's still so early here. I know we'll get some more cold weather. I need to do row covers. I'll have to go to Lowes and find something there. Plus the darn chickens will get into them for sure.
My strawberry plants have flowers on them! I love fresh strawberries. And the blueberry bushes look really good so far. The pear trees are full of blossoms! And the apple trees look like they will be too. It's just a beautiful place out there right now. But my eyes sure sre feeling it. And I have been sneezing alot too. No fun.

my peas are peeking out right now! We are so happy for the rows and rows of them this year. Last year we had about 6 plants and none of them made it inside for cooking, they were eaten before leaving the garden.

Emily, how many rows did you plant? I have never planted peas before because I just don'y like having to put up the fencing or trellises. But this year I had some extra fence so I decided to do it. I only planted 2 packs. And it's so hot already here I don'y know if they'll make it. I hope they do. I guess I just need to keep them watered real good?

Its early here too, but we got our brocolli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts plants in. We are experimenting with row covers so we put in lettuce and onions and will try shielding them from the frost. We put in some peas too. Our garlic from last year is up about 6 inches. The strawberry plants and raspberries are leafing out. We had to cover our little apricot trees tonight, most likely there will be frost and the buds are already opening. It has been really warm for this time of year and yet we know we can have frost up to the last week in May.

Susan, sounds like you have a good start on your garden. I am going to have to plant all my tomatoes soon and have been thinking I'll need some type of covering for them because we will most likely get a few more frosts too. Surely we will. And I have 115 plants so far that are at least 6" tall now.
I was reading in a companion plant book the other day about sunflowers being used for stakes for tomatoe plants. I would love to try that. But would have to hurry and get the sunflowers planted to catch up to the tomatoes. I could get them started inside. Enought for at least half of them anyway. I have several packs I ws going to just plant a whole row of just sunflowers. I think that would work really well because the sunflowers have such big strong stalks. And it would be pretty too. Has anyone ever tried this? How'd it work for you? I am always looking for ways to get more veggies in less space. I have planted squash in between corn before. And running beans to go up the corn too.
It's raining here today. SO no garden time. I'll have to wait til next week now to til some more. I hope ya'll are able to work in the gardens.

Hi Kris: Keep us posted on how your garden is producing. Our carrots are up already. We are patiently waiting for the okra to grow. Last year we had problems with the okra. Marly

Marly, I am going to have to til up about 3 rows and get these tomatoes in the ground soon. They are about 6" tall now and need some leg room. I'll have to cover them at night. And the cabbage needs planting too. The ground is drying up fast. Hubby gets to come home tomorrow til Monday morning. He is going to have to help me a little. Yard needs mowed and a rooster needs killed. Gotta have some help here! That is so neat that you can plant okra and it's already up? I am always trying to be the first person to bring okra to the farmers market. But there's no way I could plant any now. I have to wait til May. Ground's too cold right now.

You southern gals are way ahead of us...it was 20 here last night. I have lots of seeds started under lights. I have been transplanting for the last two days - 200 tomato plants from pony to pot. Next is peppers.

Sheri, you'll get your turn soon enough! Sounds like you will be very busy. That's alotta tomatoes. I have 115 so far. I will start some more this week. And peppers.
I just came in from tilling about enough for 6 rows. I am so very impressed with me! When we first started the gardens here 5 years ago they were red Ga. clay. I mean we could have trown pots it was so clumpy clay/ But through these years I have been adding loads of leaves and compost and straw and old hay. Plus manure from cows, goats. pigs, chickens. I had a friend come last fall and turn over both gardens. I sewed winter rye on the big field but never got around to putting it on the smaller one. But there are hardly any weeds. And the spot he couldn't turn because I had lots of greens still going had mustard that's gone to flower.
So I am so impressed with how it looks out there now. In just those few rows I tilled with my Troy tiller it's the prettiest brown very loose soil. It tilled so easy too. I just went over each row twice. I am very happy. I can see all the organic matter getting chewed up as I went through. So now I am going to put my flats of tomatoes outside for a few days and let the ground I just tilled rest. Then I'll go over it once more and make rows and plant the maters and the flat of cabbage. I have never planted tomatoes this early. Now watch we have a freeze in a few weeks.
So I am very excited about how the soil is looking after really working with it. Big difference from 5 years ago. And it was so clumpy and never could break it up. Now it's like sand.

Help! I put my cabbage seedlings outdoors today to get them used to the great outdoors. Well, it got so hot that some of them wilted! I brought them back in, gave them water and put them back under the grow light. I hope they make it. If they don't, I have more cabbage seeds. I also planted sugar snap peas, lettuce and spinach today. The weaather is supposed to be dry for the next week. I need to get my yard cleaned up. Filled two bags with dead branches to set out for yard waste pick-up tomorrow. And I still have a huge pile of branches by the fence. I love working outdoors when the weather is this nice. Cindy

Cindy, how do they look now? Most of the time when they wilt then are watered they bounce right back. I sure wish we had branch pickup out here. We have to call and get a burn permit. So we have a few piles going again. The Hackberry tree we had cut last fall will be here forever. I have tried a few times to burn it but it's like metal.
I put my tomatoes and cabbage outside last night to get them acclimated to being outdoors before I plant them in a few days. They are so ready to be planted though. It was cool last night but not as cool as the night before. And the days are sunny in the very low 70's. Perfect spring weather! I love it.
I have got to start more tomatoes and then some peppers. I have more little pots but need soil. And I think I will go ahead and plant a few rows of Bull's Blood beets. Those things are so good. Has anyone else ever growm them?
I am so excited! My daughter and her fiance are going to put in some raised beds and garden!! I love it. I can give them some seeds and mater plants to start with. This will be fun.
And my parents are looking at a house to buy up here. The one we looked at Sat. was just perfect for them. They put in an offer and should know by 4 today whether it was accepted. I hope they get it. Mom loves to be in the yard. She plants bushes and flowers all over. This yard is like a clean slate for her. (And me!) It's flat with a huge back yard. And the perfect place for some raised beds. And a place for a clothes line. They have never had a dryer. That's one of the questions I asked if they could hang clothes in this neighborhood. She didn't see any HMO's there. Anyway, this will be fun.

we planted about 6 rows with about 10 in a row. They are looking so healthy today, I am going to have to get my investment of tomatoe cages so that they can grow up again this year. It made life so easy, now if I could get my peppers to be so nice, but they are going into the back field this year.

all of you sound so great to me. I don't garden, just some flowers, but I was so glad today in Wal-Mart to see that they were carrying organic seeds. And they had heirloom tomato plants. Wal-Mart??
