My cabbage seedlings have perked up but a few of the leaves are still wilted. My garden has shade in the afternoon so I hope they'll do OK once I get them transplanted. I'm going to set them out for a while this evening to get them used to the cooler temps. I'll bring them in at night--don't want to shock them again

Cindy, I set all mine out last night and today was hot and the cabbage did wilt some. It's still pretty small and delicate I guess. And some of the tomatoes look like the leaves burnt from the sun. I hope they'll be ok. I think they'll be fine when they get planted and can spread out and grow. It got 80 today. I'm leaving them out tonight and they'll get morning sun then a little shade in the afternoon then we;ll plant them. My daughters will help me. I also planted 4 rows of Bull's Blood beets.

Roseella, I am using all organic and heirloom seeds this year. I have got to start saving seeds. I love flowers in the garden. I'm going to plant a whole row of sunflowers and another of zinnias. I love the colors in the garden. Plus they attract the beas and I need them.

Emily, I am going to have to figure out how to stake over a hundred tomato plants this year. I only have so many cages and stakes. I'd like to get some bamboo to use. There is a whole jumgle of it up the road. And a friend has some too. Those cages cost too much for me.

I planted my tomatoes today. My 2 DD's helped and Kansas did too. Then we put 1 sunflower seed in between each plant. They should grow pretty fast I hope. I am so tired. And still need to dig up about 5 maple tree seedlings that are growing in the garden and transplant them. I bought 2 more grape vines and need to move 2 others. Then also bought 2 big azaleas. Then I need to hoe the raised bed that's left and add a bag of peat moss then plant the flat of cabbage in it so they can grow some more. Oh my goodness, there is too much to do around here! I need help.

I use metal fence posts to stake my tomatoes - 2 to a stake. I've been doing this for years and it's worked out really well. Cages are too much trouble after the plant is dead. This year we are putting in a big hoop greenhouse 25 x 40 ft. - I was lucky enough to be gifted it from a friend who used to be a commercial grower. Hopefully will be up in time to harden off all of my plants. I've ordered the plastic and still have to get the lumber for framing in the ends and support along the bottom of the hoops. It's supposed to be in the upper 60's here this weekend so hopefully will get some garden clean up done to get ready for planting.

Blessings, Sheri

Hi to everyone....it's been a long time since I've popped in! Spring in California is my favorite time of year, and like all of you I have been working out in the garden....

We redesigned things this year, and I brought in a truckload of bark to line my walkways, and the battle has begun with the weeds, ok maybe it's an all out war....but I think I'm winning! I just harvested a huge trashbag full of artichokes, made soup, mmmmmm, and the strawberries are the biggest and the sweetest yet. I plan to plant new seeds every 3 weeks, hopefully my social calendar allows!

I am making plans for my "last" birthday....yes, I have finally made it to the "club"....I will be turning 50 this August, and I asked my DH for a lamb. I want a black one, and a white one, so I can spin my own yarn! I was thinking of naming the male....Aaaadam.....as in Adam Lambert.....lol...we are American Idol fans! Anyway do any of you have any info for me? I will post the question under barnyard...

Hope you all enjoy all that the season has to offer...happy planting!

Hello my Lisa, my friend! How are you? It has been awhile. Sounds like youa re doing what I'm doing. I was just out there and now it's hot. I am taking a break and then I'll go back out again. There's too much to do and only one person to do it all. Well, I do get a little help now and then and believe me, I DO appreciate it.

I just weeded and mulched my strawberry bed. I used dried grass clippings from when we mowed the foot tall grass the other day. I also used it to mulch my newly planted tomato plants. Does anyone else use grass clippings to mulch with?

And Happy 50 birthday! Welcome to the club. I don't want anymore either. I'll be having my 52nd soon. And I am a big AI fan too. I thought I was the only one on here that was. What do you think of Crystal and Siobhan and Casey? They are my favorites this year. I couyld listen to Crystal all the time. I was very disappointed in Casey last night though. And I hope you get your little lambs. Now's the time to get them. They are popping out all over around here.

Sheri, I am using some very old electric fence posts that came with the property. ANd also had gotten some porch railing for my little house porch and never put it up. So now they are stakes too. Metal fence posts here are around $4 now. So cannot afford them.

I am starting some more tomato seeds and peppers. I am also going to til some more tonight and plant squash and zuchinni. And I am working on the last raised bed. I think I will plant the carrot seeds. I have alot so I need to get them going.

So I need to get busy!

I have a feeling that if you still lived it Calif, you & I would be getting together for Idol night! I love Chrystal too, and Casey....OMG...he is so darn cute! He has hair like me.....(except I had to pay for mine)...he seemed off last night, hope he sticks around for a few more weeks.

I have much to learn about the little lambs, I'm not sure I have the time, but they are so adorable, and I love the idea of making my own yarn. My latest crochet projects are imbellished headbands! I'll check my emails to see if I still have your address....

Drop me a line when you have time...got to go...idol's on!!!!!

The tomato plants are getting tall! I think we jumped the gun a little bit as it is still 4 weeks before we can transplant. I was determined to have PLANTS not to be confused with plants for my son's grad open house and after the long SD winter so we started our plants earlier than normal. But they look so good! The broccoli in the cold frame is looking good too. This year is the first year I've tried them in the cold frame.

I did get all the flower beds raked out, but our grass is still dormant so will have to wait for mulch.

Penny, I had to plant my toamtoes. They were getting too tall. So I went ahead and did it. I hope we don't get any more frosts. Today will be about 82 then the rest of the week alot cooler. Some of the Big Boy plants look burnt. I hope they make it. It sounds like you have been busy. And I hope you have nice tall bushy tomato plants full of maters for the open house. I started my seeds in Feb. I have never been this early or even had them in the ground til May.

Lisa, you are so funny. I'm the same way. I don't answer the phone during AI. Yeah, Casey did seem like he wasn't into the song. It was pretty bad. But I still love him. And Crystal can do no wrong. What do you think of that Tim still being on. He needs to go. Have you thought about fiber rabbits? They are so much easier to care for and they are in cages. The fiber can be harvested several times a year. Just a thought. You might couls start with a few.

I just planted 4 kinds of squash and zucchini with sunflowers in between each plant to shade them. I am so excited about all the sunflowers. They are all organic. My onions are all up. I am waiting on the potatoes to show theirselves now. We are supposed to get rain Sat. so I need to go til some more.

I am going to use a very long cattle feed trough for a flower planter. I was walking by it this morning out back and thought it would make a great planter. I need help moving it now. I had cleaned it out yesterday. Got a wheelbarrow full of goat poop compost. Real good stuff to put on the garden. Nice and black. I also started another little compost bin with grass clippings and scraps.

I hope ya'll have a great day in the gardens.

Hey kris, I like the idea of planting sunflowers for shade, i wonder if they will choke out some weeds too? Abby planted a patch of sunflowers in may garden, I need to get out there and finish my rows. I planted a long row of peanuts, do you know anything about growing them? I also planted a 1/2 row of lettuce and the other 1/2 spinach, maybe today I will get my zucs started along with my carrots. Abby and I were in your neck of the woods last Sunday coming home from Camp Adahi, I wanted to stop by, but man I was worn out! We need to plan a much needed visit soon!

Hey Kelly! Isn't this great to be working in the gardens again? I was looking in my garden journal from last year and I already had beans, corn and okra along with everything else planted before the middle of April. I was already selling at the farmer's market the 1st of June. I better get busy! And ya'll should have stopped by. Next time your out this way call me. I'll feed ya'll! That is a long way from home for ya'll. I hope the sunflowers will keep the weeds down some. I have never grown peanuts here. There was a guy last year at the market that brought some ha had grown. I think they need very loose sandy soil. And mine is not. I might could do a raised bed and experiment.

Mary Ann, I have never grown Fava beans, I haven't even eaten them. They are huge. You sgould just plant them and see what happens. I don't know if they are a bush bean or a runner.

I went by my daughter and her boyfriend's house today. They had plowed up both sides of their front yard and are going to garden!!! I am so proud of them. Right in their front yard! It's huge. They are both so excited to get started. Abby used to help me in the garden and she does help me out here. But this will be her own garden. Already the neighbors were stopping to see what they were doing. How fun. She has been watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution and has seen Food Inc. I am going to order meat chickens and she wants some! It's finally sinking in! Now I have to work on the other daughter.

It is so hot here. I am afraid my little maters are going to burn up.

I haven't ever grown Fava beans either, so please do and tell us about them!

Have you ever tried the Teddy Bear variety of sunflowers? They're short so they won't work real well for shade, but I loved them. They were "happy" flowers. Does that make sense? Everyone alway commented on how cheery looking they were. Now please explain why I didn't save any seeds? Groan.

I got my shallots yesterday that I ordered from Johnny's. I am going to plant them today. I have never grown them. They are supposed to make like clusters of new shallots from the one I plant. I love shallots so I hope these do well for me. Has anyone else grown them? I need advice.

My poor little tomato plants look awful. Most of them have burnt leaves. I just don't have much luck with growing tomatoes from seeds and it makes me mad. All the time and money and I have to go out and buy some to replace all I planted.

I ahve got to call my tiller guy and get him over here this week and get my other garden started. I feel like I am so behind already!

Kris, I also started a garden journal, i want to be able to remember what I did this year for next. I put in some store bought tomatoes, the ones I started are still struggling! I put in onions and garlic yesterday, and 2 kinds of green beans, they are climbers so I put out 2 fence poles and a section of fencing for them to climb on, I planted twice as many this year as they got eaten quick! I ran out in Nov. I need to put up a lot more this year, I miss my fresh green beans!

Penny, I have grown the Teddy Brear sunfloe=wer seeds. They are cute and very happy. Can you not find anymore? If I see some I will get them for you.

I got a row of True Gold sweet corn, an heirloom from Baker Creek. A half row of Lady Finger popcorn that I got from Dawn. I was thinking as I planted these wonderful heirlooms that right across the road they are going to be planting GMO corn. They have been spraying Roundup and the whole field is brown now. I am worried that they might be tasseling at the same time. They have not planted yet but doesn't that stuff grow really fast? I hope mine starts growing and is first. I don't think bees will need to pollinate that corn. So the bees will be in my garden.

Then I also planted a row of Blue Lake beans from Seeds of Change. And a half row of Contender beans from BC. And a half row of Royal Burgandy bush beans from Botanical Interests. It's a purple bean. Very pretty. Has anyone ever planted any of their seeds? I just went to their web site and watches a video. It's www.botaniclainterests.com. They are in Colorado. Very pretty seed packets too. I hope they all grow for me now. It's supposed to really rain here tonight and tomorrow. Up to am inch. I hate to say it but we need rain bad! It's very dry and dusty.

I hope everyone else is having a good planting day.

Kelly, you got alot done yesterday. I love green beans too. I still have some from the year before. I did way over 100 quarts. So I am trying to use them all up now. I have some fence sections I am going to use for cucumbers and some luffa. My peas are on some fence too. That sure comes in handy. I bought some of the plastic fencing I am going to try too.

It's raining! I never thought I would say that but we sure did need it bad. I can already tell a difference. I hope it does the nice gentle rain all day now. I might be able to dig some holes for my new azaleas now. The ground's been too hard.

Kris, I enjoyed the rain too! Everything is nice and green today, not dingy yellow. I checked on my garden last night and the bloomin' chickens have been pecking at my cucumber plants! Not happy! I may have to fence them in or fence them out of my garden! It may be easier to put a small circle of fence around my plants, then they could grow up it and the cucumbers would be out of their reach. any suggestions?

Darn chickens! I have one hen that I catch out there every day. I just planted 4 blueberry bushes and she'll go and scratch every bit of pine straw off all 4 plants and I have to put it back on every day. So I finally got a bunch of rocks and blocks and put around each bush. Also I have to put the plastic bird netting over all my raised beds to keep them out of their too. That helps. I have not noticed them in my tomatoes yet. That's when they will be chicken pot pie if they start that again! With a nice ripe tomato salad on the side.

But other than clipping their wings and putting fencing up or penning them up, they will get in a garden and do what they do. They mostly will eat my very small young brocolli and cabbage plants. And just gebnerally scratch them all up. Very pesky creatures when things are small. Good luck with yours.

My tiller guy is coming this morning to til up the big garden and the rest of the smaller one!! Yay! I can get it really started now. I have to go get green beans and corn and get them started. And field peas and okra too. Those are the only seeds I'll have to buy alot of. The rest is heirloom and organic.

Tiller guy came and it looks fantastic! I didn't even have to til at all. Just plant. I have a seeder that is great and I can get the seeds planted in no time. I have planted 3 rows of field peas, 3 rows of crowder peas, 4 rows of Blue Lake beans, 6 rows of Silver Queen corn, 8 rows of Hickory King corn. 2 rows of cantaloupe, and a row of cucumbers. Plus a row of sunflowers on the east side of the cucumbers with some in between each hill. I went North-South this time since the rows were a mile long the other way and I would just cry when I was picking last year. I seemed I had hardly moved when I looked back. I tried not to look back while picking. So I went North-South with the shorter things on the east side and taller on the west sode. That should work. I will plant some pole beans in the HK corn. And I left plenty of room in between to plant more in about 3-4 weeks. Plus I need to plant okra. They didn't have any yesterday. I need to plant some squash and zuc. on the east side of the HK corn today. That will keep the plants shaded in the afternoon.

And in the other garden I need to plant my purple heirloom onions and the shallots. Plus a row of zinnias. And a few other things, too.

So I am off and running now! Just need a good soaking rain. There was an article in the local paper about the farmers are predicting a great year with high yeilds because of the good weather we have had and we are pretty good on rainfall so far. So I am optimistic.

Happy planting ya'll!

Gena, I'll trade places with you now! This is wearing me out. I am ready to go to bed. I have been planting for 2 days now. And tilling.

I planted 2 kinds of heirloom okra, 2 kinds of heirloom field peas, some heirloom purple onions and shallots, some zucchini and srookneck squash, Mexican sunflowers and a row of zinnias. The smaller garden is going to be the mostly heirloom and organic seed garden. I will try to save as much seeds as I can from these. The field peas I got from 2 old farmers at the market last year. The okra I got from Dawn here. And I got some red pole beans from someone here I swapped with. I need to plant them tomorrow along with some old cornfield beans. I have 8 seeds of those. Anyway, this should be interesting. I also have a flat of Early Jersey Wakefield cabbage I have had outside in the flat. They were alittle puny looking and now they are growing and really green. I will get them planted in about a week or so. I hope they all grow.

I know about the hubby. Mine is gone all the time and when he comes home for a few days, he wants to sleep or ride his motorcycle. Can't get much out of him. I do hope you get a garden in soon. There is still plenty of time. You'll get it done. You should get your mother to help. She'd probably love to get out there in the dirt. So would those kids!

OH Kris, you don't have any idea how funny your comment about my Mom helping is! She can hardly walk to the bathroom with her walker!
I surely didn't get the "Farmgirl" gene from her. She grew up on a farm and is the baby in her family. You should hear her sisters talk about how spoiled she was. She didn't have to work like the rest of them. I will say though, she did have Polio when she was 9. I am sure that had something to do with it.
When I was growing up, I don't even remember her going outside to do anything. My dad grew what flowers we had and veggies they had.
I guess Daddy spoiled her too. I love her anyway.
