Darn! I went out this evening to til. I wanted to do both gardens since it's been awhile. I got a few good rows done in the cantaloupe and the tines quit turning. I was so upset. And mad. It just seems like everytime I plan on doing something, then whatever it is will break down. So I had to use a hoe, which really wears me out. Or just pull those darn weeds up. So I did a little of both. I did the cantaloupe and cucmbers. Whick both look really good.
Also checked the zuc and squash and ended up with a basket full. Also have some banana peppers ready to pick. But the weeds are really taking over the tomatoes. I have got to get back out there tomorrow.
Gardening is such hard work. But very rewarding too.

Peggy - you're welcome!
Kris - I'm sorry you're still having tiller issues! That's gotta be frustrating. Nice that you got some squash, though.
So far, all I've got to pick is some "baby" lettuce mix and lots of dandelions - but the dandelions are headed for jelly! So weird to look at those weeds as a "crop." LOL
OMGosh - I just realized the reason my legs are sore is from picking all those dandelions! I got a cold from sitting in the rain for 8 hours at the Farmers Market on Saturday and have been thinking all morning that I was achy from that, that I had actually contracted the flu or something! Still sore, but that's a relief.
Melissa
BTW a friend gave me some teeny pepper plants yesterday. Probably won't have enough time for them to do anything, but they were free - and who knows!

Melissa, I have never tasted Dandelion jelly is it good? I have had Dandelion wine that I really liked. Does it look yellow when it is cooked up?

Peggy - I'd never had it either! It is tasty - like lemony honey (there is no honey in the recipe). It looks a little like honey, too, though more gelled and a little lighter gold. The recipe is in the Farm Kitchen forum. It allows for yellow food coloring if you want to add it, but I didn't. I think the next batch, I'll let the petals steep a bit longer and see if there's more flowery taste and a brighter color. DH said, "Wow! I'd buy that!" after I let him try some. Now if only my kitchen didn't need to pass an inspection to sell at the Farmers Market! LOL - that might be possible if I work on my "Get it together" badge for the next year or two.
I'm a little nervous about going out to my garden this morning - we had a very loud hail storm last night, 1/4" hailstones. It didn't last long, though. Everything looks ok from the windows, though the sunflowers lost a few leaves.

Guess what? I just picked a bucket of Contender green beans this morning!!!! And 3 of the Golden heirloom zuc. I picked a big basket the other day of squash and zuc. And there are tomatoes all over my plants. I can't wait to get some of those. So I guess we'll be having some green beans this weekend! I love fresh green beans.
It has been raining the past several days for at least a half hour at a time. I went to the garden bare footed and came out with about 5 pounds of mud on them.
I made dandelion and violet jellies. They are both so good. The violet is just beautiful. I hope ya'lls turns out good.

LOL - I've got Contenders, too...although mine are only about 2" tall right now. Sounds like your garden is producing well, despite the tiller problems!
I rains here every night (convenient!) and the last two nights of rain have really made the weeds in my "lawn" pop. I asked DH not to mow, because I want to get some wild strawberries this year, but man, it's getting to be a jungle out there.
I don't have violets, but I was planning to make rose petal jelly. I think I let it go a little too long, though - the rains seem to have knocked off most of the petals. :-( Oh well, next year!
Have a great day! Melissa

Hi Kris, Sounds like your garden is coming along really well! Dave and I took a few days and drove the Blue Ridge Parkway - great trip. Stayed at some neat B&Bs, will tell you about that later. I would love to buy some of your violet jelly, if you have enough to share. Did you get your tiller up and moving? hugs, Ruth

Oh my goodness. It's so wierd how one day there is just a plant with flowers and the next day it's loaded down with 8" long beans or squash. It happens way too fast. This morning I went out and picked Royal Burgandy, Contenders and Blue lake beans. Plus squash and zuc. I cooked the RB beans. They are purple beans but turn green when cooked. They are SO good. I gave my oldest DD the BL beans and some squash. I have got to go to the farmer's market soon. But can't this week.
Ruth, sounds like you had a good time. I sure wish I could get away. You must not have grand kids or farm animals!
Betty, I hope to dig up some new potatoes soon. They are doing pretty good this year. I have only seen one potato beetle too.
Melissa, it's rained here just about every day too. Or night. And HOTTT! In the mid 90's. The weeds sure do love this weather.
My tiller is officially broken. I stripped the gear to the tines. A major part. So I don't know what we'll do now. I am not going to hoe an acre of gardens.
Happy gardening, ya'll!
Kris

My pea plants are going crazy...but still no flowers. The tomatoes have flower buds on them (the cherry tomatoes look like they'll have lots of fruit). My wild strawberries are still flowering (no fruit yet). So far I've got rhubarb, lettuce, marjoram and thyme. Hmmm...now how to make a meal of that? LOL. Oh, my zucs and squash plants also have flower buds.
My nasturtiums are looking a little yellow around the leaves (and since they have no flowers yet, they are all leaves). Any ideas?

Oh my gosh, it's just too hot out there for words. I took my granddaughter down the road to a day camp and came back and started working in the garden. There were clouds covering the sun when I started and it was pleasant for awhile. Well, do ya'll just get sidetracked? I was staking a half row of tomatoes. I got 6 done. I kept looking at the peppers in the next row that were being buried alive by weeds. So I stopped staking and start weeding them. Then I go to the row of shallots and weed in them. Then on to the cabbage. And I was drenched by then and not enjoying that at all. So I got my dog Bubba and took him in the milk room, put him on a stanchion and locked his head in and started to shave him. He's a yellow lab and I had not realized how very hairy that dog is. He comes inside and I have to sweep dog hair every day. I have enough hair from one sweep to cover another dog. SO I decided to shave him. I got alot of hair off him. I was soaked by then. Sweat dripping in my eyes. I will go get the curry comb and brush him real good before he comes back in again.
I am tired now. I have 4 more hours to myself! And so much to do. I will go back out in the garden tonight when the sun goes behind the big tree. I just can't do it now.
PeggyAnn, I know how it is. But you better check those squash plants. You'll be surprised how fast those things grow.
Melissa, I don't know much about nasturtiums. Have you fertilized them? I did go get some Miracle Grow for my flowers. They were all looking kind of tired so I gave them all a good drink with some of that in the water. Sometimes they just need a boost.

Kris that's probably just what they need. they CAN'T be thirsty, not with the rain we've had this past week, but I bet they're hungry! BTW - Sidetracked is my middle name. LOL

Gosh Kristin...you made me tired just reading about everything you did. Side-tracked or not girl, you got a lot accomplished.
Melissa...the nasturtiums are probably turning yellow because of all the rain. But the Miracle Grow is a good idea anyway.
The only thing growing in my garden due to all our rain...is the slugs! LOL

I was so pooped yesterday I was in bed at 8:30. I think the heat just zaps the energy right out of me. I think I will go out after the sun goes behind the cedar tree and stake some more maters. I was hoping for some rain to loosen the ground to make it easier to hammer the stakes in but it went around up this time.
I have been grinding up all my egg shells in case I see slugs. They work great.

Hey Kris...do egg shells work like salt on slugs or what? Never heard of that, so now you have me mighty curious girl.
Someone has been salting the slugs around here and it makes a horrible mess but it gets rid of them. I hate to kill anything though I hate the destruction they can do.

The green tomato worms are out already! Yuck!! But my ducks love them. Now I just have to pick them all off! It seems like they are way early this year....we don't usually see them until the tomatoes are almost done.

PeggyAnn, the ground up shells will tear the bodies of the slugs and kill them. I know that's gross but it works. I have salted a slug before and OMG! that's nasty. So I will use shells.
Karla, do you let the ducks in the garden? I had some ducks and they would go in my garden. They wouldn't eat anything but bugs but they sure would step all over a low plant and mess it up.

Kris...I am definitely trying the egg shell. I just went out on to my porch to water my flower containers and two of my Gerber Daisey plants are standing there with stems only and not one leaf or flower. Not Even Funny...I am so mad! They were beautiful plants just two days ago! :+0

Oh shoot! Darn ole bugs. I just love Gerber daisies but I cannot keep them alive. So I just admire everyone elses. I hope this works for you. Have you actually seen slugs? Like the slimy trail they leave behind? You might need to pour beer in the things the containers sit in. I know they have a name but I can't think of it right now. But beer works good too. They get in and drown. I know. Disgusting. Anyway, so sorry they are eating everything. Hope this works.

Kris...I went out on my Porch tonight and literally picked off (with a towel mind you) four huge slugs (like 4 or 5 inches long) off one of my Gerber Daisy Plants. Then, I went right in the house and ground up 4 or 5 eggshells and went back and spread them on the soil of my planters and spread a little around the porch too. Those slugs...looks just like big old leeches like we use to get on us at the River when we were kids. Grosses me Out!
Hope I don't need to resort to the beer but I will if I have to. I am counting on the eggshells to do their magic!
Thanks for the tips... ~Peggy

Peggy, how did the shells work? I was reminded of swimming in a river in Ga. when I was youger and getting leaches on me. It was so awful! Something a person never forgets.
it's just too hot to go out in the garden. I did go out yesterday morning and picked beans and squash for a friend. My first sale!! And I went over in the big garden jungle and saw lots of cucumber flowers and actually picked a nice size cucumber. So they look reallt good. Some are starting to climb up the sunflowers. And the cantaloupe plants look good too. I am trying to keep the weeds out of there. And the sweet potatoes are running. I tried to pull a big beet and it wouldn't come out. I will have to dig them out. The ground is so hard down there. And the onions too. I don't know how things grow but they do.
I am taking a day off today. I am all alone here. Nobody but me. It's nice in a way but kind of lonely.
Ya'll have a wonderful day.

i helped the kids last night make a recipe for ant killing. its DE and borax and powdered sugar. hope it works for them. I do not weed my gardens totally when fruiting. such as strawberries or boysenberries. the grass and weeds ensure every bird flying by does not stop for lunch.especially tomatoes. they grow naturally in bright light and under trees in normal habitat. it saves me work and fruit. the woodpeckers (flickers are nesting all around in our trees. they love ants and beetles. the birds and chickens help keep the bugs at bay. i used to have to spray my soap spray often. now rarely do i use it. Kris i sure know what you mean by to HOT to be out there. so far this year we have still been rainy thunderstorms and cool. this week is supposed to be better. hope your all staying cool and happy happy days sherrye

Kris, I picked my first tomato yesterday! I got it before the hens! Which is great because the are eating everything else! Now I am babying my watermelon, if they get that I'm quitting! Next year I am putting in a fenced in raised garden! No more munching my veggies! Hope all is going well for you!
