The egg shells seem to be really helping with the slugs.
My Vegetable Garden is also beginning to grow after all this rain I was about to just give up and call it a bad year for gardens, but it just goes to show that there is always HOPE!
Kris...I guess slugs are easier to deal with than hens eating your veggies. Wow...what a hassle. I know you can buy stuff to keep deer from eating your veggies and plants, I wonder if it would work on the hens? You might check with your local Farm Growers Association or Farm Store.
Blessings, Peggy

Sherry, I hope your ant killer works. We have a lot here.
Kelly, I have picked a few cherry tomatoes. That might be all I get. I know about those darn chickens in the garden.I run mine out every day. I bet that tomato was really good too.
Peggy, I am so glad the shells worked! I thought moth balls would keep them out of my border that I had mulched. And my little flower gardens. But no. It doesn't. They still go in there all the time.

Hi girls, We picked our first zucchini last night! going to make zucchini bread out of it - YUMMY! We have one green bell pepper that is ready to pick also. Lots of green tomatoes - BUT we need rain! A couple of weeks ago all it did was rain, now we are praying for it! I'll have to try the eggshells. Is it HOT there Kris????? Hugs, Ruth

Hey Ruth. Yes. it's way too hot here. 97 the past few days with the same for the rest of the week. I did mow the yard today and shoveled some gravels from the driveway with Kansas' help. That's about it though.
I need to make zuc bread too. I have a basket full. I am going to Varnell Thursday to meet some new friends and might take some.

Dear Darlene...I forgot to tell you that I did make the Slow Cooker Bread Pudding and it was mouth-wateringly fabulous. Even my hubby who swore he didn't like Bread Pudding Loved it. I used real sugar with the cinnamon-sugar but the rest of the sugar I used Splenda (trying to keep those 50 lbs off);+). It was so good. We loved it both warm and refrigerator cold.
Thanks for sharing that recipe.

Slugs. I detest slugs. I haven't seen their signature slime path this summer, but I think they are hiding in the straw mulch. Something has been snacking on the annuals, but, thankfully not the vegetables or perrenials. Thanks for the reminder about egg shells and beer. We are non- alcohol drinkers. One year the slugs were particularly bothersome so I bought a can of beer to drown them. One of the kids saw the beer in the fridge before I put it out in the garden and she was very upset and worried about her mom!

I would love the bread pudding recipe too. I need to make bread but will wait til later. Don't want to turn on the oven during the day.
Hello Lida. I don't drink either but I do make my own vanilla with vodka. So I have to got to the liquer store. And it seems like I always see someone I know there. I did want to get some kind of liquer a few weeks ago to make a Mojito with all my fresh peppermint. And I thought it sounded so refreshing after working in the garden. So I went again to the store and asked the guys there if they knew how to make them. So I got Bicardi rum. I made the drink and apparently I don't know how much 6 oz. is. It was way strong! So I have not made anymore since. I will have to get a good measuring cup for that so I can correctly measure 6 oz.
I have got to pick beans tonight! I don't want to pick beans. I really only want tomatoes. I also need to pick squash and zuc. But good grief, it's just too hot for me. I end up soaking wet with sweat dripping in my eyes. I hate that. I know I am complaing. I know I said I wouldn;t after freezing nearly to death all winter. But really!

Kris...go to the Virtual Porch Thread and you will find Darlene's Recipe for bread pudding. I think it is on page 103 (give or take a number) you'll find it though. It is at the end of a longer conversation she did. It is worth the search. ;+)
I wish any of my garden needed picking right now. The way it is going with all the rain we had, I might get a Zuc. mid July And the rest in August. Today is a nice beautifully perfect day here. And I am rejoicing in it.

Kris, It is tooo hot out there, and it's not near as hot here as it is at your house. I feel for you! What are you going to do with all the zucchini and yellow squash? I have a friend that was wondering what to do with it - I told her to make bread and freeze it (just joking with her)! Seriously, can you freeze or can those two veggies? I know you are going to sell yours at the farmers mkt, but that is not an option for my friend. I have some zucchini relish that someone made and gave to me. Haven't tried it yet, but it looks yummy! I'm going "hunting" for the bread pudding recipe! Hugs, Ruth

Ruth - I'm jumping in here when you'd asked Kris specifically - but - I freeze squash every summer!! I shred it first and then freeze it about 1/2" thick in ziploc freezer bags, so I can stack them. They don't require defrosting when you use them, you can just break off a piece and toss it into the skillet with whatever you're cooking. I use it ALL THE TIME. It's super great in spaghetti sauce, but I make alot of "skillet" type meals and almost always have zucchini, kale, or something like that added in there. I have a REALLY yummy recipe for chocolate cake that includes zucchini, you'd never know it, and it's really low-fat too!
Not only does my family then eat alot more veggies, they have acquired a taste for them and they're not sure how!! ha!

Good ideas, TJ. I'd love to have the cake recipe. If anyone has good recipes to use up all this nice produce, just post away. I'm sure we all would love to try new recipes.
I have dehydrated squash and zuc. Then store in baggies til needed. Alos I know that we aren't supposed to can them anymore because of bautulism (however ya spell it!) I do anyway. I use them for casseroles. Also you can add to soup mixes when canning that. And I LOVE zuc bread. I do freeze that too.
I am trying to stay inside til the sun goes down a little. I started cleaning and I am sweating! I had a flea outbreak in the house. The one cat that used to stay in has not come in for a few months now. Bubba comes in sometimes. I just put flea oil on the dogs. So the other day I sprinkled Diotemacious Earth all over the house. It's a white powder. You can imagine what my floors look like. And the grand had her white footprints all over the brown leather sofa. Too cute. But what a mess! And of course my vacuum is tore up. So I went today and borrowed my friend's really nice vacuum and have just vacuumed the whole house and mopped. And dusted. And I am taking a break before moving into the dining room. I really hate house cleaning lately. Well, actually for about the last 2 years or so. I would love for someone to come take all my junk away.

Have any of you ever made Baked Stuffed Zucchini? We use the medium to big size ones for this. I take one large one and cut it length wise down the middle, scoop out all the seeds and goop and scoop a trench out in each side down into the meat or flesh of the zucchini (but don't throw it away)put it all in a bowl and set it aside. Then you take hamburger or turkey burger or a mixture of the two if you like; and mix-up your favorite meatloaf recipe but also add the seeds/goop/flesh in with the meat mixture. Put your long slices of zucchini on a cookie sheet side by side (I cover the cookie sheet with aluminum foil/no mess), pre-heat the oven at 350, then stuff your meat loaf mixture into each side of the zucchini slices (and really mound it up) then either smother the top of the meat with canned tomato soup (don't dilute) or easier yet, cover with Katsup and bacon (like you usually do with Meat Loaf any way). Bake for 45 min to 60 minutes...depending on your range. At 45 minutes poke both the meatloaf and the zucchini to check for tenderness and to make sure the meat loaf is cooked threw. If not done...cook longer. It is a great way to use those Zucchini that grew faster than you thought they would.:+) It is also very yummy and makes an entire meal in one dish...for a family.
Enjoy, ~peggy

Oh yum! That sounds really good. Thanks so much. I have got several big ones I could do this with.
Sherry, sounds like you are having a rough time with your garden. And only 4 whole strawberries? The ones you sent me are doing great. Still no berries. Maybe next year?

Eating fresh food from our own gardens! I love it and can't wait for more produce to be pickable! So far we have had rhubarb, Swis chard and radishes. I think the kale will be ready soon. The butterhead lettuce looks like it may be pickable soon too, but I have never grown a head lettuce before so I am not sure how to tell when it is ready!? I meant to plant buttercrunch leaf lettuce, but got head lettuce instead. It looks really pretty planted in the middle of the onion patch. Does anyone know what size or shape buttercrunch lettuce should be to harvest?
I have been doing a lot of mulching to get the garden ready to have me away from it for a few days. I will be visiting my mother and tending the garden I put at her house next week.
Zuccnini relish- I made 4 pts last summer. Good stuff, but we aren't big relish eaters. I wasn't aware that canning summer squashes is being discouraged due to botulism. Thanks for the info Kris, I will have to look into that.

the concern i think is no acid in the zukes like green beans and tomatoes. if you can its best to use a pressure cooker. mom always cooked the veggie with the lid off for 20 mins. before we ate it. no lid is the key. just a thought Kris glad your berries are doing ok. they may give you a little fruit in fall. mine are just getting started. everything is behind this year. we are behind anyway since we are high altitude and close to snow year round.yesterday summer came. now we will be scorching hot for a few months. things grow like crazy. we irrigate only way to grow in desert. any hoot hoping all is well with you girls happy days sherrye

TJ, Thanks for jumping in - I did address Kris, but its open to any and all suggestions - I love all the ideas! I'll pass these on to Marsha. Shredding and freezing sounds good to me! I'll do that if I have more that we can eat. We only planted two plants though! I did stuffed zucchini years ago, but used the zucchini as a bowl, then put in stuffing mix and cheese, don't remember what else, but it was really good! Might go digging for that recipe to share! I did see a chocolate zucchini cake recipe in one of my Taste of Home cookbooks, but have not tried it. Kris, I'm with you on house cleaning - it's never ending, especially when you have three fuzzy little doggies in the house! Hugs, Ruth

Did ya'll naotice I changed the title? It is everybodies garden adventures so I thought I better change it.
Lida, I have not grown head lettuces before but I have seen them drown in other's gardens. What I have seen looks like lettuce from the store but not as tight. You can pick it as leaf lettuce though.
Sherry, I don't think I could live in a desert. I feel like it's a desert here sometimes. But I bet it is nice the rest of the year there.
I made stuffed zicchini tonight for dinner. Finally used those that have been on the counter staring at me for awhile now. I googled recipes and found one that looked interesting. It used sausage and lots of other good stuff. It was good but needed more ooommph. I think something like Pepperidge Farm stuffing mix or something. It just wasn't spectacularly tasty enough for me. Everyone liked it but it just needed extra seasoning. I do plan to make the meatloaf type recipe that Peggy posted next time.
Ya, we got some nice gentle rain this evening. I was so disappointed though. It looked like the bottom fell out over on the mountain and the clouds were going away. Then it thundered and lighteninged a little. I even sent Kansas out to do some rain dancing. We were inside watching her and here came a loud thunder and she jumped and ran inside and said she was done! Then a little later while we were eating it started raining. It was really nice. God is so good.

How do you know if a green bean is to big? Can they be to big? Are they tougher? I have some gigantic ones on the vine wondering if they just need to go to the hens, like everything else. THanks!!

Wow Peggy that bought back some memories for me - we used to eat baked stuffed Zucchini all the time when I was a kid, my Dad used to leave some to become very large just for this we all loved it so much and I had completely forgotten about it until I read your post.
I don't think I ever fed it to my kids when they were growing up but I will definitely do it next time the family come for a meal - Thanks for reminding me of it

Kelly, I don't like green beans bigger around than my pinky. But it depends on what kind they are also. If it's a string bean not big at all. But a Blue Lake bean can get a little bit bigger. It's the strings. You just can't seem to get all the stringy out of them. Then my MIL used to grow the leather britches beans to dry and they got pretty big. And some people like the bean inside to be bigger. I always go by if they are tough when you bend them and they don't snap, they are too big. I like the small and crunchy.
Hello Sue. Welcome to the garden. Pull up a chair under shade tree. How's the weather way over yonder? It's about 95 today here in Ga. What are you growing in your garden?
I did go out this morning and picked cucumbers, squash, yellow zucchini, peppers, shallots and okra. I am going to make an apple zucchini cake for desert tomorrow. But I am going to wait til later when it's a little cooler. I do not want to heat the house up. I also want to make zucchini bread.

Welcome Sue from the UK. It was neat to hear that you liked the stuffed Giant Zucchini too. We have had a lot of rain here in WA which is no great surprise but we broke some of our own rain-records this Spring. So, I was just out in my Garden and I got so excited I did the happy-dance because things are just beginning to grow and get blossoms. We may have tomatoes and zucchini by late July or early August if we are lucky.
Kris the apple zucchini cake sounds wonderful too. The apple would make it so moist.
Ruth glad to hear that you are having a big Fourth of July Gathering. Love it when Family Celebrate Life together.
Kelly you can get green beans too big and then they do taste tough and stringy. Yeah, give 'em to the chickens! Good idea!
