The curtains blowing in the breeze seems destined to be for relaxing underneath. I have a section of my backyard I want to do something similar in, but I need my son-in-law to move his boat out of that section. It has been parked there for 4 years .

I helped some friends who have developmental disabilities in their huge vegetable garden last week. Their goal for their garden is fresh produce for healthier and less expensive eating, and to someday grow enough to sell at a roadside stand. I am going back to help them with newspaper and straw mulching this week. Their huge garden has no mulch. This is their second year of gardening and they are learning a lot. Some hope to learn enough that they can get real jobs in the gardening field.

Carpe diem!

Lida, what a great thing to do. I need to find something to do like that. And I am sure they are learning alot form you. Keep it up!

I didn't do anything in my garden yesterday. I did work on the stall that the turkey babes will go into soon. I made a roost out of branches. ANd put up more chicken wire to keep them in and bad things out. I hope. They are 5 weeks old now and are getting really big really fast. I started them in a single cage and last week went to a double. They are filling it up fast. And they are quite messy birds too. But they are so stinkin' cute!

Have a great Sunday, ya'll!

Kris, We stayed at a B&B in Weaverville, NC. The Ox-Ford Farm. She had pet turkeys, just two and they had a guini (sp) hen that thought they were her parents - too funny! She also had many, many, many peacocks, peahens and little ones. Sheep, herford cows, scottish cows, chickens. four Great Pyrenese dogs, and one little kitty. She is a retired physician, a truly amazing woman! We had a great time visiting with her and while we were there I thought about you and your farm!
Marian, I LOVE the fabric idea - I can just see it blowing gently in the breeze - very cooling!
Hugs, Ruth

Well, we've added more tomato plants to the garden. Yesterday, we went to the local nursery to some annuals to decorate our outside table. They had tomato plants for 50 cents each. My husband has never met a tomato plant he didn't like, so we came home with 8 tomato plants and two green pepper plants. Somehow we will add the 8 to the 50 plus we already have. Well, three are replacements for ones that didn't make it through out cold wet spring and then into hot, hot, summer.

Lida, I wanted to add to my last post that I purchased salsa yesterday from a local farm here that grows tomatoes and makes and sells the salsa -- the people who live at and work the farm also have developmental disabilities. It's a great organization that helps them. Suzanne

Dutchy sorry to hear that the Netherlands lost the World Cup to Spain!

It has been a perfect 80's day today. I haven't done anything in my garden but
look at it today. My Zucchini plants are getting HUGE...they a covering my garden
art now. Which is a good thing...I would rather have produce!

Blessings,
~peggy

We got rain last night!! And should get more the next few days!! I am so excited! I won't have to water for awhile now.

Sorry about the loss, Marian. What a bummer. I don't care much for sports and don't watch it at all. But it was a big deal for them.

Isn't it amazing how big plants can get in a hurry? I always am reminding myself when I plant ----- "they grow BIGGER." Otherwise, I try to plant way too many things in one place. Suzanne

Is anyone canning or freezing anything yet? I just put 5 quarts of early apples in the freezer along with 4 more quarts of blueberries. I have a big basket of tomaotes that need canned today. I am excited about that. More about them being finished than actually doing them. I do not like all the prep work with tomaotes. Lots of work. Anyway, was just wondering what's going on in the kitchens around the world.

We have had good rains the past several days here. I am ever SO thankful.

I do a little freezing & drying and no canning anymore. Only because we have no room in our apartments for canned goods. So, everything I grow I try to share with family and friends and do my part in feeding my little community of people. I canned every year when I still had my family at home and I just loved the beauty and benefit of all the hard work. Sometimes when I was up to my arm-pits in produce that needed immediate attention, I wasn't always thrilled to have so much work to do at once. But once those jars are sitting on the
counter cooling...they are so gorgeous! And you know how wonderful they are going to taste during the winter months. My favorite things to can were pears, peaches, cherries and then I also made fabulous bread n butter
pickles. I also loved drying fruit for myself and my kids. Good healthy snacks. I think my favorite fruit to dry was Italian Plums (some people call them prunes). And I always froze my corn, green beans, asparagus and some chopped zucchini and some shredded for bread. And I made all my jams Freezer Jam. Oh, such good memories, hard work with fabulous benefits!

So, Kris my hats off to you girl!

Blessings,
~peggy

Peggy, how did you freeze the grated zucchini? I just grated 2 pans full and layed them out and put them in the freezer. I will put them in baggies once they are frozen. Does that sound ok? My freezer is full already. Now I will have half a goat in there tonight. I need another freezer!

Hi Kris, I was doing good until you said you were putting half a goat in your freezer! Veggies are good, fruit is good, not sure about the poor little goat! Goat milk is good though!
I'm not a vegatarian - but probably could be! LOL!

Kris...what I did with my shredded zucchini is put them in pre-measured baggies.
If your Zucchini Bread Recipe calls for 2 cups of shredded Zucc. then that's what
I did. And because freezing adds extra moisture I would cut back the liquid that
my recipe called for by maybe an 1/8th of a cup.

Ohhhhh, I can smell the bread already. Yummy!

Blessings,
~peggy

Well really, it's only about 25 pounds. Not much at all. About 4 bags in the freezer. Not big ones. I am cooking the tenderloin right now. Just took a bite and it's pretty good so far. Kind of sweet.

I made 13 half pints and 5 pints of muscadine jelly from grapes in east Texas. And WOW it is good. It was my first time and I loved it and love having the jars cooling on my counter top also.

Suzie, isn't that the best thing? I love to hear the ping of the lids when they seal. Such a wonderful sound. And that's great to be canning for the first time too. That will be some good jelly.

I am going to can the tomatoes tomorrow. Today, I did the zucchini, blueberries and made some olive rosemary bread. Maybe there will be some more ripe tomatoes too.

Kris- I understand your dilema about freezer space for produce and the goat meat! I have a freezer for my frozen garden/market produce. Last week my brother asked if I wanted a side of beef because he has to butcher a cow who broke her leg and they don't need the meat. I said yes, but now I am trying to figure out what to do with the beef and the produce! I will have to do more canning than usual.

When I had my steer butchered I had to put almost all the meat in my friend's chest freezer in town! There was no way it was going in any of mine. I have 2 huge uprights and a half freezer. Plus 2 refridgerators. I had a fridge in the milk room for all the milk and goat stuff but it quit working. I really miss it in there. I need another one. And all of these are full and I have more stuff to put in them. I am looking for a few lambs to raise for meat and also want pigs. Am I just crazy or what? Plus I will be ordering meat chicks in about 3 weeks. And they take up lots of space. At least I can use my friend's freezer.

PeggyAnn, that bread is good and so very easy. About the easiest bread to make. If you want the recipe I'll put it down here.

I have got to start tomatoes!

Yay, I finally canned 5 quarts of tomato sauce! It took all day but it's done. And all 5 lids popped! It's alot of work but will be so good this winter. When I get a few more baskets I will make some more. I also drained off alot of juice. Got 1 quart and a big glass that I drank. It's really good. These were juicy 'maters.

We are still feasting on greens, although in this hot weather our spinach is bolting (it was 101 yesterday). We hope soon to have some squash, but we got a very late start this year -- things just didn't grow in the cold wet spring. My herb garden is delighting us though. Suzanne

Sherry...are you still wanting a Zucchini Bread Recipe? I will be happy to email you a good
one if you do. Just let me know.

Suzanne...I know what you mean about the cold wet Spring...us too, but all of a sudden it looks
like I just might have a Garden after all. My summer squash leaves are so big they look like
Elephant Ears. LOL And lots of blossoms. My tomatoes are beginning to blossom...oh the joys
of Sunshine and warmer temp.s
