I guess I should have asked first if she had ever gardened! Opps! Well, I know kids like to get in the dirt. Kansas helps sometimes. She helped plant the tomatoes and she likes to water everything. I would like to have a little part of the garden for the grands. I'd like to do the tee pees with the pole beans and the flowers and pumpkins and watermelons. I have the oddest shaped garden. I starts out straight on one side and the other side is more angled. The straight side is along the driveway, which is in the middle of the property. Then the property itself is not straight. So I end up with a v-shaped part in the middle. None of the property lines go straight with the road. They are all angled. It's strange for sure. So maybe that middle part will be a good kids garden.
I do hope you can get out there sometime and get a garden going. I remember when my kids were little. I would put them in a playpen when they were real small or a swing and get out there and work. Then when they got older they weren't any problem. They'd find a good muddy spot and make mud pies or something. They'd both end up covered in mud. They never wore clothes then and we lived way out in the country. SO I never worried about them being nekked. We just had fun.

Wow Kris! I am always envious of your huge field!! My garden is so tiny compared to yours! I am still contemplating enlarging it but I am not sure if I want to or not. We will be moving out in 3 years so do I really want to do all that work for 3 years of growing... hmmm... I'm still not sure.
I am supplementing this year with two smaller beds though. A bed for watermelon (if it ever decides to sprout) and a bed for cool weather crops like lettuce.

Alee, I stopped at a friends house on the way home. She has about 6 raised bed gardens and a spot at the back of her house along the foundation. She grows lettuce, spinach, onions, potatoes, peas, beans, okra and tomatoes. And she gets alot out of those few beds. So it can be done with less space. I am growing for farmer's market and several other families. So I have to grow a bunch. I just finished 7 rows of okra just now. I am done. For about 3 weeks. Then I will plant some more.
I found a lady over the ridge that has a green house and she has heirloom plants she's grown from seed! I am so excited! She also sells at the Chatt. market. She also has Lamancha and Nubian goats! And chickens. We are way too much alike. She is just about doing this on her own too. It was like meetinf a kindred spirit. I got 12 heirloom red bell pepper plants and 6 yellow cherry tomato plants. I may have to get the rest of my tomatoes from her because mine look awful. I just don't have much luck growing them from seeds.
We are supposed to get some pretty severe weather here tomorrow. We need rain but I don't like storms. At least there isn't any tall stuff growing yet.
Cheryl, I have to laugh at myself sometimes too. When I was out there planting the okra my dog Bubba was watching me. I asked him if 6 rows was enough and he said I should do 1 more. So I have 7 rows. He's a big help.
I was so tired yesterday I went to bed about 8:30. Then of course woke up at 3:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. I hate that. But I guess I needed it.

Kris, I just found your "garden" adventures tonight and have really enjoyed reading them! I know where to come for fresh, good veggies this summer! We have put out a few tomato's, squash, pepper plants. I did find some TeddyBear Sunflower seeds today I'm going to plant. Also some butternut squash - my favorite veggie! Stay safe tomorrow = the weather report is scarry to say the least! |

Kris-
I think it is too funny that you have a problem growing tomatoes from seed. I think they must do better with the Less Is More approach. The first year I grew tomatoes I just shook the seeds out of the packet and let them grow. They produced so many tomatoes that I couldn't collect them all fast enough and some fell to the ground and I just let them stay. The next year I had twice as many volunteer tomatoes!!

Alee, I think it's because I don't fertilize them til I get them in the ground. Then it's just manure. But these this year really looked good when I planted them. It was just so hot for several days and the sun burned the leaves and the leaves are important patrs to the plant. Most of them are still growing. I have lost about 10 probably. And ya know, some of them were from a few darn chickens scratching them out of the ground. So I don't know. We got a good gentle rain all night so I know they are just loving that. And we should get more today. I am so glad. They really needed this.
Ruth, I'll let ya know when things start coming in and ya'll can come on over and pick! I'll have plenty!

We got flooded last night. That bad storm came right through. We didn't get the high winds but we sure enough got the rain! Every time it would light up the sky I saw the gardens and they were under water. I haven't gone out there yet but there's no telling where things might pop up now! Or pop up at all. And I had such nice neat rows too. I guess time will tell. Last year the big garden got flooded and I had to replant most of the middle part. But that's part of farming. I am just glad that was all we got. I don't know about the rest of Ga. Al. or Tn yet. I know Miss. got hit hard and this was the tail end of that. But Fort Payne, Al. had a tornado on the ground and they are just west of us over the hill.
I hope everyone elses gardens aren't under water. Ruth, how are ya'll over there? It was headed to NC.

Hi Kris, I was thinking about you last night as our weather radio kept going off! We had lots of rain and some wind, but thankfully no tornado! That weather is so unpredictable and scarry! Hope your garden in no worse and maybe even better because of the rain. Let us know after you go out and survey the land. Hugs, Ruth |

We just got a bad storm this morning around 6:00. I think when the storm reached the App mountains, it took the wind out of it. I am worried about our girls in AL and Mississippi!

Ruth and Gena, I'm glad ya'll are ok. I just talked to my mom in S. Ga. and she said they are getting some bad storms right now. They are almost to Savannah. She said the sky is black and raining and windy. They are known to get lots of tornadoes down there. It's flat as a board.
I just heard on the weather channel that Chatooga County got hit hard. It's a little South of me. I have not heard from my 2 DDs yet. I hope we hear from some Alabama girls soon.
Gena, I hear our president is in Asheville on vacation. Have you seen him yet?

Things have started to warm up here in Portland Oregon. So I have onions planted, and my tomato starts have been moved from the cold frame to a planter to harden up on the porch. Harvested spinach out of the cold frame a week + ago and my crisp head lettuce has a nice start to it. Artichoke plant is starting to come up and the Rhubarb will have to have its first pull probably in a couple of weeks. The blueberry bushes are blooming and my raspberry and Marion berry plants are going to town. Have to plant potatoes soon.

My poor Roma tomatoes are hanging off a small cliff. All that rain we got last night made a river right next to where I planted them and they are just hanging on. I can't get to them because it's too muddy. But I will in a few days and hoe some soil back onto them. They all look good though. They sure needed some water. I think I might have lost the squash and sunflowers at the bottom of that garden. The big garden looks good. It was under water awhile but all the rows are still visible. There are a few spots that probably will need replanted. But all in all it looks good out there. That was alot of water in such a short time.
Gena, maybe next time you and Mr. & Mrs. Pres could have lunch. You'll have to send them an invite.
Anne, Your gardne sounds good so far. I would love to have some artichokes. And rhubarb. I will be looking for some. I hope you get those potatoes in soon. I have seen my white potatoes but not the red ones. I planted them on Good Friday. They should have come up by now.
It was just beautiful here today. Lots of wind so it kind of dried off the surface. We have more rain in the forecast this week with very nice temperatures. Like Spring! I think I will be able to dig holes now. I have 2 azaleas and 2 more maple trees and 4 grape vines to plant. The ground has been way too hard to dig but mow will be good. I will be doing that Monday.

Mmmm, you could have a big ole BBQ! Yumm! I would come. I'd love to meet them.
I got my 2 azaleas planted this morning! They look so pretty. I need about 8 more now. And some redbud trees. I still need to plant the maples but it's kinda cold out there right now. I bet my okra and corn won't come up now. I think I have jumped the gun here. And we are supposed to get more rain this week. It's been rianing all day off and on.

Oh, I'm so jealous of you all! Our frost free date is June 1st, and though it was in the 60s today, we still have a little snow in the shady parts of our yard! My kids were digging Matchbox cars out of the frozen sand in the sandbox yesterday (THEY are born Alaskans!). Guess I should be thankful that our season starts later than everywhere else, since my rear is seriously out-of-gear. DH is going to build me a nice greenhouse this summer, but I need to get one of those small, plastic-curtain covered shelf type greenhouses for this year, and potting soil. Still have time for a few kinds of from-seed plants, if I get to it this weekend. Gotta figure out how to thaw my compost heap enough to turn it, too LOL!

Hi Melissa. Welcome to the forum! I can't even imagine what Alaska is like right now. Well, maybe, because right now I am freezing and it's 3:25 in the morning and I can't sleep. Again! This is getting old. I am so tired when I go to bed early then I wake up and can't go back to sleep. My dog Bubba woke me up this time. Barking. At nothing. Darn dog.
So it has been really cold here the past few days and will be for the week. I used to want to move to Alaska becuase I can't stand the heat here. Until I turned 50 a few years ago. Now I can't get warm. So goodbye Alaska! I do not like being cold and have had a total turn around on that idea. Maybe Australia now? If this is what getting old is like, I don't wanna do it. I have a friend who will be 93 in July and she keeps the heat turned up to 80 all summer. I used to bake when I went to see her. Now I think I might be moving in with her.
And I for sure jumped the gun on the garden. I planted my one pack of True Gold heirloom corn last week. Plus all my heirloom okra. It will probably more than likely NOT come up now that we are having such cold weather now again. If it does I will be so surprised. But right now I am upset. And at the bottom of the garden in the small one the small row of sunflowers and scallop squash was washed away by all the rain. I might have a huge pile of sqaush and sunflowers at the end of the row. Maybe. But everything else looks ok. I did see a red potato leaf yesterday! I was so glad to see it. It's been awhile. And the peas are giong to start climbing up the fence. The shallots are looking good so far too. I just don't want to have to replant everything. Oh, I am seeing lots of beet greens too. I planted 4 rows of Bull's Blood beets. They are so good and very pretty.
Melossa, I love your blog. And the clay! All your creations are just beautiful. I am amazed at what you can do with that stuff. Very pretty work. I hope you get your greenhouse up and running. Is that about the only way to have fresh veggies there?

Kris - thanks for checking out my blog! I love playing with my clay, but my studio is in the basement...and before the spring rains come (Fairbanks is in a boreal desert, so that not a lot of rain), it's just too dusty outside to clay. Unless I'm going for an earthy look, LOL! And I want to be OUTSIDE after the winter. It is possible to have fresh, homegrown veggies here, but our growing season is short, and some varieties don't like all the light. So, to extend the season and get things started, a greenhouse will be a big help. Last year I managed to grow about 6 beans and a few snap peas. On the plus side, raspberries (wild and, um, tame?) do well in our yard and rhubarb grows all summer. To enormous sizes.
Sherrye - soap art? Sounds cool...pictures anywhere? I get the "a few weeks in summer" - Interior Alaska actually has a lovely summer, usually, but sometimes it seems like - what? was that it?

I have got to find some rhubarb now. Where is the best place to order it? It's so expensive too.
I was looking in the big garden and all that rye grass is starting to come back out. It's all over! And nothing else has sprouted yet. The nights have been so cold I'm afraid I'll have to replant. But now I am thinking of all that tilling I'll have to do when it gets dry enough. I just hope the old tiller will keep working for me.
It's supposed to be really nice today and Thurs. Then rain the reat of the week and weekend. Blah.
Oh, I had my cabbage and tomatoes and pepper plants out on the top of the well house and I put Abby out there yesterday for a little while. She got a few of the peppers and some of the cabbage. Darn it. I didn't even think about them being too close to the edge. But then again, she's a very tall goat. And last week I had put the 2 grape vines and 2 azaleas back the to water and had Abby out there and I completey forgot. When I realized what I had done she already ate every leaf off the grape vines. Thank goodness she didn't get the azaleas. She was there maybe a minute.

Oh heavens. I took a chance last week and put out my garden. Of course, last night, we got a light frost. I'm really praying not EVERYHING was killed, or, will at least come back quickly. If not, I'll have to buy plants from Ace or Lowe's. I'm mainly concerned about my squash & tomatoes.

Megan, you're not that far from me. My tomato plants look good so far. I think this cool weather has helped them. I put them out when we were having about 85 degree days and some of them got burnt leaves. But it's cold here now! I have not seen any squash sprouts yet. I hope your is ok. Can you cover them somehow? I have too many to cover.
