Mona is due on the 27th of the month. I am gearing up and getting ready for the milking, and all that goes with it. We have sure missed the fresh milk and can hardly wait. Plus the cute calf....that is always so fun! This will be her 4th calf now. Hard to believe she has been a part of the family since just before she had her first one! I have never once regretted getting her and would recomend a Jersey cow to anyone who wants a great friend as well as milk supply..She is so sweet! I will keep you gals updated on the birth. Meanwhile there is a picture of her very wide body on my blog..taken just last week. She is even wider now!

Oh Jenny, how exciting! I hope she has a little heifer. Do you bottle feed the calf or let her share milk? And how much milk will you get each day? You have lots of kids though, so they probably drink it as fast as you get it. My friend's Jersey had a heifer Thursday. I am going to go see her tomorrow. This is her first full blooded Jersey heifer. I have her half Angus-Jersey heifer here. SHe's almost 8 months old. I hope to be able to milk her. I'll see.
I can't wait to see you post about the birth. Is she an easy cow to calve?

congrats jenny, i wish my cow would calve now. she is not due till aug. i have a cow here maddie. she is a pasture bred dexter cow. a real sweetie. just not tame enough for me to feel safe milking her. if i had more time to train her it would work. i sure would like pics too. i went to see her on your blog. i only saw her face. so we shall see if maddie or mona calves first. maddie is not slab sided yet and her bag is just starting to fill. i have a reg. dexter out in pasture i will check today. she is due tomorrow. some say when they are late its a boy. we will see. this time around it would be pk for her to have a boy. i need more meat standing in the field. hope all goes well for you and mona. let us know when she is in labor. i love watching and hearing about it. happy days sherrye

Oh Jenny, I am so excited and sitting on pins and needles. I have never raised a milk cow and love reading about your adventures with Mona - I wished I was closer because I sure would assist if need be. I have pulled several caves for my friends and milk many a goat but I must say milking a cow is not in my bag of tricks. I so admire you and please let us know when the sweet one comes.

Thanks gals! To answer some questions...Mona does deliver easily so far..each of the other calves have come in the afternoon and I have been right there every time..which is awesome. We keep the calf for a few weeks (shorter time for bull calf) and let the calf stay with MOna full time. We still get 6 to 7 gallons of milk per day beyond what the calf drinks. Our family can use up to 2 gallons a day but I do have friends and family lined up who get milk each day. (they pay for her feed and hay...works out great!) I wish we had space to keep her calf but never have yet. I think about it each year though...so you never know. But..it works well keeping the calf with her for a few weeks. I don't have an easy way to separate the calf. I have everything on hand to bottle feed if it becomes neccessary but hasn't in the past. Grace..I had milk goats (Saanen and Oberhasli) before getting Mona and it really isn't much different. She is just bigger and not as clever (but much more loving) so it isn't too tricky. I had to help pull a little bit with her very first calf..but mostly because she was nervous I think. Her calf last year was the biggest yet and she had him with no problem. I will sure let you all know when she gets close. She is so big!!!!

Yes. So far have always sold them to someone willing to bottle feed.

I have been seriously thinking of keeping the calf longer this time..we shall see. I still wouldn't be able to keep it forever (a bull calf would eventually be in the freezer of course and a heifer calf could be sold as a weaned calf) but we will see. Husband isn't all for it.

Hey Jenny, just wanted to add a thought for you, now that Mona is having her fourth calf. Keep a watchful eye out for milk fever. With Jerseys, they are more prone to get it, as they get older. My Summer had her 5th calf, last fall, and sure enough, she started acting a bit off. Called the vet, and got the calcuim in her before she went down. Good luck Calving, to Mona. Michele |

Mona had it last year actually with her 3rd calf so I have dealt with it. I hope it doesn't happen again this year..but I am ready with calcium just in case.

Jenny, my friend's cow is older and she got milk fever right after calving a few weeks ago. She almost died. It was awful. But she got the calcium in her real quick and she is fine now. And the little heifer calf is so darn cute! Looks just like a deer. Just gorgeous.
So is Mona showing any signs yet? I can hardly stand this waiting. I know you can't. Good grief, this is worse than a pregnant person.

No signs really yet. Her pin bones are looser and she looks "ready" back there but hasn't bagged up as much as she usually does so I know she won't likely be early. She actually looks very relaxed..haha. More than me!!

Mona still hasn't started bagging up much yet, but gosh she looks so ready otherwise. I love the name Ida...worked with a lady with that name once. Mona has just been very quiet today and rested alot..not as rambuctious as last week for sure..but curious. We had a family cookout in the backyard to thank some nephews who helped us roof our house a couple weeks ago and she was loving the extra attention.

wow mona you were up late last night. so still no calves for me. ida is a reg. dexter. we really call her crooked horn. she is the head of the pasture. this is her 2nd calf. i am going out there tomorrow and check her. she was due last tues. i was hoping to not need the vet till they all had calved. then i could run them through the chute and test them. there goes those well layed plans.lol i am now thinking your mona will calve before maddie or ida. i like the name ida also. she came with her name. its ida j mar chardonney. she is from idaho. very noisy girl. i think if she gets in trouble she will yell. happy calving sherrye

Nope..still waiting. She seems to be in no hurry. Her udder was more full today...but not super full and shiny like usual on calving day so it will be at least tomorrow. I really thought it would be by now for sure!!!

You all know the old saying "a watched pot don't boil", well i think that goes for our critters too, lol. As soon as i was sure the birth would not be that day, and went and left them alone, GUESS WHAT, next time I was walking by, there would be a shinny new baby.
