Yesterday morning, at 5:15 am, more dusk than dawn, my 10 year old lab and I went to let the chickens out. We are leaving the coop and Cheerios spots a racoon and he is all over it. Well I'm yelling, he is growling and the raccoon is screeching and I'm trying to break all this up with a big stick. The coon finally gets away and up a stump and it looks hurt but ambles away ok. Cheerios is the happiest he's been since the last time he caught somethin, marking his territory everywhere cuz he wants credit for saving us from the coon. I turn towards the coop on my way back in the house and the chicks are lined up along the fence, their little heads all cocked in one direction watching us. That was funny.
I had to wake up hubby and the other two dogs to tell them about, I have no idea how they slept through the noise.
The bird feeders were swinging so the coon must have been having a snack and we surprised him. I think he will be ok, and Cheerios had no marks on him. You guys all enjoy your day, Carol

Good for Cheerios! It sounds like he gave that raccoon a run for his money. ...and the chicks -- priceless!

Very cute about the chicks...I would have laughed so hard! And kudos to Cherrios! Everytime one of our dogs has tangled with a raccoon, its been nearly impossible to call them off of the coon. Good job!!

YOU GO CHEERIOS!! My most petite girl was barking her head off one night (she never barks.... at ANYTHING!) I knew something was wrong. So, I got in the truck and headed toward the racket. I saw 2 pairs of eyes, then one, then none.... I could not figure out what was going on! As I got closer I noticed it was a raccoon... A BIG ONE! Definitely bigger than her in weight but not size. I called her away but when she went to leave it alone it would stand up and beckon for more... I have never seen such a thing. I do not think they were playing but she had NO marks on her. Never heard from it again. I can just imagine the stories she was telling around the farm that day.

I'm so busy I don't know if I just found a rope or lost my horse!

Cheerios is still prancing around where the coon was, I don't know if he is just showing off for the other dogs or re living the moment! I bet he is having sweet puppy dreams.
Danielle, I LOVE that by line. I have days like that and I don't have a rope or a horse!
