So Isabella has two baby chicks as of right now, and I've gotta say she's acting NOTHING like what people said she would. She's letting other hens still sit in the box with her, letting the teenage roosters (3 months old) eat out of the food and water in her box...is that weird, or has anyone ever had a hen like this? Yesterday one of the 3 month old hens decided she wanted to sit in the box with Isabella and pushed on of the babies right out! The baby ran around on the floor sqwaking and Isabella just watched it. Thank God no one attacked the chick - they all just watched it run around. Isabella doesn't act like she's sick or anything...more like she's totally blissed out on motherhood. I wrote about it and took pictures (they are crazy!!) in my blog.

So...do I have weird hens, or what!! ;)

I read your blog on it....HA! I AM the farm of the Misfit animals! I swear, if it doesn't have 3 legs, or missing an eye, it doesn't live here, lol.

Isn't Isabella a first time broody? If so, this is probably why she's so nonchalant about the whole thing. I remember even with MY own first child, I just had this quizzical look for about three years. Anyway, you may want to go ahead and separate her from the flock with her babies, so that no one comes in and beats them up.

Isabella just left the coop with her babies all by herself. Gave a couple of the other hens what for, screamed at some teenagers, and now the two chicks and her are sitting in the sun together.

Sounds like she got it together. I can understand the screaming at teenagers! Carol

LOL - she still lets our big rooster go after her though - I don't know what his issue is. He doesn't bother the chicks, but he sure wants to give her a piece of his mind. (And its nothing to do with jumping on her back.) Any ideas what's up with that??

Yes, the chasing after her is re-establishing the pecking order. Isabella has been "gone" for 21+ days and will have to get back in line again. Watch the rooster carefully they have been known to kill the young chicks even though mama is watching them. Have fun with your little ones, I have a first timer sitting on 7 eggs. Hopefully she is a good mama.

Thanks for pointing out the re-establishing the pecking order. I had forgotten I'd read that somewhere else. :) Good luck with your first time Mama!
