We have had some extremely hot weather days this year already. Should we be putting a fan in for the chickens when they are not out roaming? My husband and I wanted to inquire. By the way, he loves the MaryJaneFarm magazine! We fight over it, along with our older daughter.

They can get over heated. I have a friend who is losing chickens (dead) to the heat.

We personally put in fans in ours. We also had their house insulated though cause of our extreme winters, and the first winter ours froze to death! So we built a insulated house for them, and no problems ever again. We put in windows (salvaged) and in the summer would would raise the windows and turn on the fans, it helped them. We had more then chickens though, we had peacocks and the like too and they would be sitting withtheir tongues hanging out they would get so hot!

My chicken houses all have fans, some drawing air in, and on oposite end, blowing air out, I also have misters in front of the fans blowing in, so the air is extra cool, when its extra hot.

I have a fan that blows the air out opposite of the door so it creates circulation. I also fill up a tray with icechips and set it out for them in the hottest part of the day and we have a mister hose near their favorite tree.

Thank you so much. It's our 2nd year with our chickens and I was concerned last week when it was above 90°F. You are all very helpful. I just love this Website and everything Mary Jane has to offer.

I too place a fan in the coop sometimes two and keep the air moving. I also place Ice cubes in water bowls - sometimes they just like to stand in the water to cool themselves. I place sand in a very large litter box and that also stay cool and they will sit in that and spread the wings to cool themselves. I also check more often on them just to make sure all is well. If someone looks like they are the least bit in trouble in it in the shop and on the cold concrete floor they sit and with a half hour they are right as rain.

Good luck and stay cool.
