About 10 minutes ago, I heard a banging noise in the garage. I went running out there and thought I saw a raccoon. No, it was 2 Rottweilers that we have had on our property before.
Poor Monkey- they must have broke his neck, other than that he looks untouched, but they knocked his cage off a table,and tore it open to get to him.
I can't seem to stop crying, and I don't know what to do about telling my daughter. (she's 27)

Brenda, how awful. I am so sorry, I will wipe your tears. Whose dogs are those? The owners need to keep them contained or they will be back, especially if you get another rabbit. I guess just tell your daughter the truth and have a good cry/hug together.

Oh Brenda, how awful. You need to find the owners, and tell them to keep their dogs contained. Diane is right. They will be back. We had a neighbor's dog kill all our chickens a few years ago. They kept coming back even after we spoke to the owner. We ended up fencing our whole place in, even have put in a gate on the drive.
You have to tell your daughter the truth.

Ohhh Brenda! I am so so so sorry that you have to go through this. I agree with Diane and Gena said.
That hard cry with your daughter is all you can do with her.
I wish I could personal hug you and cry with you too. I am watery eyed because my friend is sad. :o(

Brenda, that's awful. I am so sorry that happened. I know you must be heartbroken. I love dogs but not dogs that will kill like that. In Ga. if an animal comes on your property and does something like that we have a right to shoot them. And we have before. There is just no place for that. You need to call animal control. If they would do that to a poor defenseless rabbit what would they do to a child? Or even you? They need to be stopped. And I am sorry if I sound cruel but if a dog has done this once, it will do it again. Please be careful, Brenda. Give your DD ahug for us too.

That's awful. If you know these dogs, you need to make sure to call Animal Control and seek reparation from the owner. Not that a dollar amount can replace a little life, poor buddy, but it can make the owners rethink setting their dogs loose. Poor little guy--what a horrible thing to find, Brenda.

You have to keep the rabbit and the mess and call the police! I had a dog that kept tormenting my cats, which were inside and had a window seat to look out by. My Hubby stepped out to yell at it one day to get rid of it and the beast came after my Hubby and nearly got in the house! My poor Hubby was bitten several times and we had to call the police. I kept thinkin, what if it had been one of my kids?!?!

I am so sorry, and I agree with what everyone is saying, those dogs will be back, and thank God you or your daughter were not out there at the time. I don't know what sort of area you live in, but where I am, its the 3 S's, shoot, shovel and shut-up.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, it helps dealing with this whole mess.
I knew enough to take some very shaky pictures first thing- ugh. Then I called animal control and left a message, called 911, who told me not to go outside. That poor 911 operator, I was crying so hard, I had a time trying to tell him what happened. I did manage to get out"this is not an emergency" before I broke down. He was so kind to me.
The 911 operator called me back to tell me they had contacted animal control, and that they had had other calls about these dogs. At 8:00 I look out the window, and there are the dogs in my garden right next to the chicken coop. I hadn't let the hens out yet, because I didn't want them out without my husband around. Called animal control again, and right after I hung up, he came by. He went out looking for them on foot but couldn't find them, he told me the sheriffs were also looking for them because of the other calls.
He came by twice more plus called my husband. My husband came home from work pretty angry and headed out with his guns. He didn't find the dogs, so then he got in the car to look for them, and happened to find out where they live. It's some kid who owns them, he wasn't there, but his father was, and the father was very apologetic but told my husband he was scared of the dogs. The dogs were not at home at this time. This was 2 hours ago.
I have no idea where they are right now, but I am petrified to go outside, or let Bonnie and Bear out. I saw them again around 10:00 so I am thinking they are waiting for chicken. I have Bonnie and her puppies on our screened in porch and the first time I saw the dogs I brought them inside, worried the dogs would break through the screen.
This is not the first time I've seen those dogs. In April, they were in our yard when my mom and dad were here visiting. I called animal control, but obviously we never knew where they came from. Animal control told us then according to NY laws, if a dog is attacking you, you can't shoot it, but if it attacks your chickens you can! We have a leash law here, but if I can prove that the dogs killed the rabbit, they will be considered dangerous, and something definite will be done about them.
Last month I was walking through the apple orchards with my daughter and Bear, and we came across them. They scared me then, I was sure we were dead, but even though they growled at us, they let us go.
According to the 911 operator when I called to give them the address of the dogs, the dogs did something else this morning, but she couldn't tell me what.
I am still just so distraught over poor Monkey. He was such a good little bunny, and loved my hens and the dogs too. :( My daughter will be home at 4:00 and I am just dreading telling her. She's had rabbits since she was 8, and it's always said when they die, but this is the absolute worse.

Brenda, I am so glad they are being looked for. This kid should not be allowed to ever have dogs again if he lets these 2 dogs out running the neighboehood. And attacking animals and maybe even people. How scary. I am so glad my whole property is fenced in. I feel very safe here. But really, that guy should be prosecuted and held accountable. And that dad should be out looking for them too. With a gun.
And that's totally crazy that you can't shoot a dog if it's attacking you or your kids but only chickens. Too crazy. I just hope you and your family and animals are not hurt in any way. And that they catch these dogs fast.

Oh Brenda, I feel sick to my stomach knowing what you're going through! I am so deeply sorry for all of you and your dear Monkey! I too love all animals, but the dogs need to be destroyed because of the fact this has become "a life style" for them and that won't change. I hope and pray they are caught soon so you all can once again feel safe. Lin

Lin is right this has become a "lifestyle" for these dogs. Once they started doing things like this it will never stop only get worse. That must of been an awful experience for you. But, please keep at the authorities until the dogs are dealt with. If you don't you will never have a moments peace with them around. It could very well be your Bonnie or one of the pups next time, your hens or one of your family. Believe it or not, we have two little sh**zu mix dogs around here and they have attacked my grandson and bit him up badly on his leg and calf. Then they were coming down our laneway with half a bunny that they had killed. I know it was a wild bunny. But, we love our animals
that are on our property. Now that they have caught one, they will go after everything they can, I know that. I hope you have a quick resolution to this problem and can have peace and safety around your home again.

These dogs are very dangerous. And so is the young man who's responsible for them. Aggressive dogs often have aggressive owners as well. Please let the authorities handle this. And I'm so sorry about Monkey.

Brenda just be careful. I have been down the same road before. Two dogs together makes them twice as dangerous. I am so very sorry. I went through something very similar. I think I cried off and on for a week. Hugs to you both.

I feel the same way as everyone else here. Those dogs won't stop killing now that they have had a taste of blood. I just feel bad for the dogs, it is not their fault. There are no bad dogs...just bad owners.

Diane, you are absolutely right.... I know that in my heart, although it is hard for me to feel any sympathy for those dogs at all right now.
The owner's father came to our house yesterday, he didn't even have a shirt on. I'm sorry if I'm old fashioned and too sensitive, but he couldn't even show respect for the situation, by wearing a shirt?!!!
I don't want to make the decision to have the dogs euthanized. That is not up to me. According to NY state law, however, they are now considered dangerous. My husband told them(the owner's father and the owners's wife) they either need to get rid of the dogs, or we will go to court to have them removed. We will have the support of the whole neighborhood in this.
Personally, I believe the dogs would be better off euthanized. They've had too much of a taste of freedom and now killing domestic animals. If a rescue group could insure that they would never go to a home with children or other pets, and be in a secure fenced area, I would be happy with that.
I love dogs. I have never, ever been afraid of any dog in my life. At 51 years old, I am now afraid of these 2.

Several years ago, a rot (that was in the paper for sale, and I was moving out on my own and wanted a dog for protection) bit my step father when we went to check it out. Thank god it was behind a fenced in area (yes we were accompanied by the "seller" when this happened! Thankfully she hadn't opened his pen yet!). He about didn't let go of my step father's hand. My step father required a few stitches........but what was much worse, is he almost died from it! It didn't look worse then a flesh wound, but ended up sending a infection to my step father's heart that took over a year to get rid of!

Our nasty neighbor back in Ohio thought that it was funny to sick his rot on me while I was pregnant with my daughter. We called the cops at least 8 times and they did nothing. Finally, we got the dog warden involved. I made two trips to the hospital from the stress. I could not go outside in my own yard the last three months of my pregnancy.
It tried to run in my house. My hubby clubbed it on the head and sent it running back home. He told them in no uncertain terms that if it came back he would shoot it. You have the right to protect your family and property. The cops did nothing. Finally when we did get the dog warden, he went to court and they threw the book at the guy. I think that the dog was destroyed because it didn't have its shots and the daughter and the dad fought over who owned it. Neither wanted to say that it was theirs. No licence no shot records nothing.
It attacked the mailman and another neighbor. It had been maced several times.
My hubby would have shot it if it had come again. We had rabbits, cats, and a older dog. Plus I was pregnant. I would have shot it if I could have. I am not a dog hater. But this isn't a joke and you will pay seriously if they get a hold of you, your daughter, or anyone else.

I hope those dogs get taken away soon! That is so dangerous! I love Rotties- but they have to be well bred and well mannered. They are big dogs and can do a lot of damage if acting aggressively.
If they keep coming around you could fill some water balloons with vinegar water. Throw them at them (if you are safe) and they will NOT like coming by your house. But I would only do this out of a window or something. Don't do anything to antagonize them if you are out and about. *hugs*

Vinager ballons sound like a great idea! I would also carry some mace if I was out in the yard until the are caught. I am so very sorry for your loss. My son's dog attacked one of our bunnies a year ago and after she had the taste we couldn't keep her away from them. We had to get rid of her and gave her to a friend that didn't have any small animals. I am very sorry for your bunny. They are the sweetest creatures.

SO Sorry Brenda!
We had a neighborhood dog here that killed 3 chickens at one place,
and 2 down the road. It came in our yard, and I called the police.
They came right out and warned the owners to keep it tied up, and
fined them, if it gets out again they're taking the dog.
We told the police about the neighbors, he interviewed them as well.
Always call the police! They need more than 1 report to be able
to act, and show cause.
I always feel guilty when something gets killed, as I feel like it's
my job to protect them, since they can't do it themselves. Makes
me feel like I failed, but you have to remember all the good things
you do for your animals, and how well you take care of them!
