I am, by far, not the most experienced gardener. I have a little 20x20 fenced in garden in the back corner of my property. Every year I feel like a failure because I cannot produce a decent crop of anything...except perhaps for tomatoes. I finally stopped blaming myself this year, and realized "who" the real culprit was. Just about every year, my little island is put on water restrictions due to drought. I completely understand the need for restrictions. I'm not trying to fight that. I was just wondering if there are any tricks, or special precautions that I can use to help my "crop" from turning into tumbleweeds. I'm sure I'm not the only one faced with such problems. How do some of you cope. What suggestions do you have??

We have water restrictions as well. I am diligent in watering when I am allowed. We are allowed to hand water so I do that, I mulch everything which keeps the moisture in, I try to plant things that can shade the plants that need more moisture, I water at ground level always. I have a small sprinkler that I can put under plants which waters closer to the ground. The other option is soaker hoses or drip irrigation. Soaker hoses are cheaper. Hope this helps you.
Give thanks to yourself everyday for all the wonderful things you do! |

| This fall and again next spring, till in 10 or so bales of peat moss. It aerates the soil, fertilizes it, and helps keep it more moist. Also, mulch, mulch, mulch.Even old newspapers will keep the weeds down and the soil damp. Also, when running water in the house for rinsing veggies or hand washing dishes, catch water in a tub and dump it on your garden. Dish soap may even help with some garden pests. Happy farming |

Can you catch rain water? I would do that. And lots of mulch real heavy and deep to keep moisture in. I don't think I could handle living where there were rules. I'd have to move.

I mulch with newspapers and grass clippings. It will help to hold in the water. If I had to I would have figured out how to catch kitchen sink gray water for use on the garden. Diana
