My sister and brother-in-law have been in town for the week and while they were here they did some laundry. Which is fine. But, they took some of my laundry out of my baskets and threw it in with theirs!!! Why???? I am pretty particular about the way I wash my stuff because I have a certain way that I like to do it. I have certain tops I don't want shrunk, I like my dishcloths & dish towels washed separately because those are kitchen items and I don't want them washed with the bathroom laundry--body hair on dish cloths---ick! Other than that I'm not so picky really, but why do people have to do my laundry???? My mil is the same way, I literally have to hide my laundry from her or she washes it all together in one big load with whatever she's got. Whether the colors are going to run or the lint is going to get the whites linty, or whatever.
I just had to vent! Thanks for anyone who reads this and understands the frustration.

Isn't it funny, okay, or very not funny, when "helping" is, well, not as helpful as intended!!!

I guess they are trying to "help you" and be polite since they are guests. This is better than having ungrateful guests who think you are the maid service. They dirty everything possible and make no effort to clean up after themselves. Then they leave and you have a royal mess everywhere! I'm sure each is annoying in their own way.

Rebecca, I think you and I share the same MIL. I hinted nicely, hinted not so subtly, flat out told her and got mad when she shrunk a brand new pair of pants. I still have to hide my laundry or she will NOT leave it alone. Drives me crazy and I, like you, do NOT wash socks with t-towels!! I don't understand her thinking...why would you deliberately do something you have been asked repeatedly not to??? I literally have to hide the laundry baskets in the bedroom. It's nuts!!

Laundry is MY thing too..and I don't even like for my husband to do it..ever! I am teaching my girls to do it (MY way of course) but slowly. I have lots of laundry rules too. It would drive me crazy to have someone just do my laundry..I see how you feel. Most of my friends are more casual about things than me and would tell me I need to calm down. I don't let anyone else do the dishes or milk the cow either..I want it done a certain way. I am happy to have anyone do any other chores..but do they offer...nooooooooooooo haha.

Rebecca I CAN understand 100%. I hate other people doing my laundry. When I had surgery a couple of yrs. ago I told everyone please dont think you have to do my laundry because I was ok till I healed. (just a few days) They didnt listen. I love them for trying but........

rebecca .. i tend to agree with teddie .. their hearts were probably in the right place .. and maybe when you have company coming .. you might put a cute little notice in your laundry room (and any other place you might not want 'messed with') .. telling your guests how much you do appreciate their help .. but you have a certain way of doing laundry/dishes/putting things away, etc. i'm sure they meant no harm gurlfren. but i also understand how you feel. HOWEVER .. with that sed .. anyone who wants to come here and do ALL of my housework .. COME ON DOWN!!!! HUGS!!
OH! reminds me of a 'story' here!!! When Hank and I first got married .. I did our laundry .. which of course, included the 100% wool "baby-blue" sweater that matched his "baby-blue" eyes .. ohhh .. and did i mention .. that his ex-wife had knitted it for him?
well .. (and i SWEAR there was no 'malice' in my actions) .. i tossed that sweater in with the scivvies .. whipped that washer dial to HOT .. and rinse to COLD .. then popped everything into the HOT dryer for an hour or so! Needless to say .. that "baby-blue" sweater was TIGHT on BARBIE!
NOW: my momma didn't raise no fools! from that day forward (and it will be 30 years come July 4th!) ... Hank sweetly told me that he would rather wash ALL his clothes in the future. OH HAPPY DAY! AND TO THIS DAY .. HE DOES! XOXO

Yes, my husband irons for more or less the same reason.
I don't mind people doing things for me, as long as they don't ruin stuff. My sister & my mother-in-law are a lot alike sometimes. It's actually quite scary. They tend to do stuff and just throw caution to the wind. That's fine for them, just not everyone can handle willy-nilly household jobs. And not everyone likes gray whites and hairy dishtowels.
And they both will use any towel for the dog and then turn around and use it on the counter or for a hand towel or dish towel. Or they use the same mop they used for the bathroom floor for the kitchen floor. They don't care.
I have 3 children. My standards are pretty low in my estimation, but I just really prefer to at least nod my head at hygiene.

Ha ha...I can relate to all of you on this topic. Not so much about having someone actually doing the laudnry for me...but last summer, MIL was over and she folded all of my laundry wrong. I had to re-do it all after she left. The socks were all rolled into little balls and the t-shirts weren't folded smooth like I like them.

My SIL came to visit us one time and she decided to help out and do our laundry-my favorite dress, which was an original gauze dress from the 60's, was 'RUINED'. That was about 10 years ago and I still can't bring myself to throw it away. The last time she came-I hid my 'good' stuff.

It is so funny, I feel the same way with laundry and dishes, I do the laundry in a certain order, whites first, I was kitchen towels, white socks, etc..then I do light colors, then jeans, then dirty work clothes. For some stupid reason I think if I start with the extra dirty clothes, my other ones won't be as clean! Same with dishes, I was in an order! Pretty funny, especially for me, who is a mediocre housekeeper at best, I always want to be outside! But with dishes and laundry I am picky. ps great sweater story! Kate Talley |

You have a separate mop for your bathroom? It never occured to me!
I LOVE it when my mother comes and does all my laundry. She is a much better laundress than I am and it's the only time my laundry is ever REALLY done.

Can your mom come to MY house? :)
you can be oh so smart, or you can be oh so positive. I wasted a lot of time being smart I prefer being positive. |

This is so funny, but my mil will be here in 2 weeks for a month long visit. I just love her, she is so nice and we have such a great time together....BUT she always feels compelled to go in my room and do my laundry too. It wouldn't be so bad, but she does our whites. She sits there and folds my underwear out in front of everyone, it drives me crazy. So Rebecca I am with you, and maybe I will get everything done and hide it as I go, and only do laundry early in the morning when everyone is sleeping.

funny my mil has a habbigt if she watches my kids I come home to either my dishes done or my laundry washed or my socks matted. It is embarresing to me it is like she is telling me I can't take care of her son and 3 granddaughters. I know that is not what she is doing she just tells me that she gets board once the kids are in bed so she looks for something to do. I know clean the batheroom I hate doing that as I am alergic to all the cleaners and it sends me into an asthma attack that I would be very greatful for but leave my dishes and laundry alone.
have a lovely day |

Rebecca- They probably do your laundry because they love you and they have seen a need and want to help.

I am with you ladies that have lots of kids, our laundry is never truely "done"
I used to be alot more uptight about the way things were done, now I am just glad to have help! Having lots of kids will do that to a gal!

I don't want to seem ungrateful, because I am happy to have the help. I work 7 days a week away from the house and try desperately to keep up with the house, but fail often. I don't think I would mind the help with the laundry, if she would leave the underwear alone. It's a very weird feeling to have someone holding up and folding your underwear in the livingroom in fornt of everyone.

Ok I have had a complete change of heart regarding this topic. Maybe it's because I am so busy and just turned 40, but I don't care who does my laundry as long as it gets done. Earlier I wrote my MIL and DIL were coming to town soon and that she tends to wash all our clothes everyday and fold my white in the living room in front of everyone. Well it's been a week and a half and with 6 people in the house we have a couple loads of laundry everyday and by the time I get home it's all done, folded on my dresser. Thank God for helpful people and thank God for helping me see this little gift that has helped so much.
I know not many will agree with me, but I thought I should fess-up, that I have had a change of heart.
