Just thought I'd share this idea with the milking gals out there...I always had tried to keep order with my jars in the fridge so I knew which ones were older and use them first. But thanks to our Daisy, we are getting so much milk and between DH and the kids helping themselves all the time, I couldn't keep track anymore. I now date each jar with an Expo (dry erase) marker. It wipes right off, and makes it easy to know which ones to use first! Just thought I'd share in case anyone else was struggling with post-its, tape, and rubberband methods like I was. ;) Sorry if the pic is super big!! :/

Good idea Molly. Sometimes I have so many in the fridge too. I use the blue painter's tape and put the date on that. It comes off easy too. But I like your idea better because then there is no tape to throw away or get stuck in the dish washer. Thanks.

I'm glad some of you are liking this as much as I do!

Deborah, I got the jars from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Jarden-68100-Count-Mouth-Canning/dp/B0000BYE26/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1283227307&sr=8-1 They are not cheap, but I have had mine for 3 years and haven't had a single broken one, so I figure they are worth it. The wide mouth makes it easier for skimming the cream, too. I like this half-gallon size for applesauce, too, since I have 6 kids and opening 2-3 quarts at a time was a little silly to me!

Oh and I'm in Queen Creek. ;) Not sure where Mescal is, Candy.

Great idea...I will be using that for sure when Mona freshens again. I tended to write with a sharpie on top of the lids and then after awhile had to clean off all the written over mess from the lid...I use a dry erase board in the kitchen all the time and never thought of this....thanks!!

I get my half gallon jars at Ace Hardware. They come in a box of 6. They weren't too expensive. I have had mine for years.

Can I ask ya'll what you strain your milk through? I have the big strainer from Hoegger with the round strainer pads. I am almost out. I reuse the pads alot. But I had read somewhere that someone used one of those cone shaped coffee filters. Does anyone have any other ideas for straining milk?

Molly, Mescal is near Benson southeast of Tucson along I-10. My address is technically Benson though (8 miles away).

Deborah, I also get my jars from ACE Hardware. They carry or can get the plastic lids too. They are the greatest for storing the milk (and lots of other stuff too!).

Kris, I just use the round strainers from Caprine Supply. I used to live in Kansas so I order from them! :) I think the milk strainers are finer than the coffee filter would be.

Great dry erase idea...I just found out that it also works on the plastic egg cartons I use. I think my hubby and kids were getting tired of my regular hounding to put the jars and cartons in certain places in the fridge so I am sure they are greatful to ya.
BTW...I use hoegger discs for straining but I also heard of someone using the cone shaped milk filters with success.

Great Idea. Plan on using this when Summers freshens the end of the month. I was always trying to rotate the stock! I use Ken Ag 6 1/2" filters in my strainer. Get them at Farm and Fleet for 5-6 dollars for 100. I use a new one each milking.

goodmorning susiek, what is it you want to know? i use a machine to milk. i first clean her udder with warm wet cloths. in the water i put a few drops soap and vinegar. after washing i use an udder wipe on the teat and orifice. then strip the teat to get the plug out and milk in the teat. then milk. when done i strip the teat of milk and use an udder wipe and dip in udder non toxic made from milk dip. then to the house i go. i use cotton hanky type cloth for filters and sometimes use hoeggars disks to filter. then it goes in glass jars and in fridge right away. so you are an experienced milker thats great. are you milking now or waiting for a calf to be born. i hope this helps some. happy days sherrye

Well the only way I have milked is to help the calves when they cannot suck. I am waiting on a calf right now she is due any day. Right now I drive around 300 miles to get my raw milk. Do you do any test on your cow about the milk.

hi susie you do need to milk girl. i would need to look at the tests to tell you for sure. tb brucellosis there are 2 more. jake is coming next week to draw blood on belle. she came from a dairy so i know she is good. BUT for my own self i shall test her. i am also going to test her for A-1 or A-2 milk. jerseys have a higher rate of being good milk. i think it is A-2 we strive for. my understanding is that a long ime back there was a mutant gene. it was bred into a lot of livestock milk. it causes the milk to be a real problem for some folks. if the milk is A-2 it is digestable. the article is called The devil in the milk. this was not known before. dna is fairly new so this is a more recent awareness from earlier days. the thinking that folks are lactose intolerant is sometimes, NOT ALWAYS this gene mutation making the milk indigestable for some. then factor in milk is heated and the natural enzymes our God put in to break lactose down are dead. then factor box stores dehydrate milk. put the powder in vats. measure add water make milk???? so then we think we can drink it. first thing i noticed was... my coffee with store milk which i drink when i have to turned my coffee kinda white. with whole fresh milk it stays very dark but tastes great. they measure the white powder out to a white color and richness. this way each bottle is eaxctly the same color and taste each time you buy iy..... gotta go GD. here to feed calf her bottle sherrye

Have always done the dry erase marker thing--jkust a pain if someone forgets and writes on the lid, have to clean w/ alcohol. Sometimes this gets rubbed off, though! As for filters...Ann at Hoeggers taught me to use the 6 inch strainers cut in fourth for the approx 3 inch strainer bottom....saves on buying the round ones by ALOT. It is also best not to reuse filters. I also want to get some of the gold filters for coffee makers. What if we can't get the throw aways????? What dod our gransmothers and their mothers use? Floursacks? LOVE MY HOME DAIRY!!! PS, gotta check the yogurt and chevre!!!!

Wish I could stay home more to be a fulltime homestead wife/mom....SOMEDAY! Part time will have to do for now!

I use muslin material right now as my strainers. When we got Maizy the going got tough and didn't have extra money to buy strainers and all the nice things out there for milking. I started out with cheesecloth but found there were still specks of stuff in the milk so I switched to muslin. It works like a charm! Strains through quickly and I don't have specks in my milk. After I've strained the milk I put it in the wash. I had a nice size piece of it and just cut a bunch of squares out for the straining..so I have a weeks worth of muslin pieces to use for straining and I just throw em in the wash when we're getting low. Since feb been doing this and have not been sick so I'm sticking with it until I figure on upgrading
