I go pick up my Maran chicks today. Not sure what I will pick, but I have choice of black copper, splash copper, and blue copper. They are straight run so I'm getting 8, hoping for 4 pullets. I can only keep 3-4 in my very small coop (Eglu), so I'll have to face rehoming the roosters in a few months.
I'm not a complete novice, having had both a commercial operation and backyard biddies over the years, but this is a return to something I thought was behind me in this new city life. I'm sooo excited. I'm sure I'll be having hubby build a bigger coop in the spring. I can have up to 10 here in the city, and that's my eventual goal.
Wish me luck!

LUCK! Hopefully your breeder will sex them correctly and you wont have to re-home any Roo's!

OH Congrat's on your new additions - good luck on getting the right sexs and I hope you will keep us up to date.

I have 31 new chicks after many years of only having grown hens. It is such a wonderful adventure and I have written about it and post updates on my blog if it is of interest.

Happy Chick Day

I picked up nine in all, 5 Marans and 4 blue Cochins. All are doing fine and growing like little weeds. The Marans are black (2), wheaten(1), and blue(2). I fear I got a couple of males, but the seller told me she has NO problem selling Maran roos. The cochins will all be blue, with one starting to show a slight frizzle on the wing feathers. All in all, I'm thrilled and will certainly have an interesting-looking flock. Hubby is just shaking his head, realizing there is a carpentry project in his near future.
Grace, I notice you're just up I-25 from me in Larkspur. Any advise on keeping chickens warm and healthy in our CO winters?

Melina another Colorado Gal - Yeppie!

Well, last night was my chicks first night in their big coop - I was a worry wart and checked on them every three hours. They did fine. I have two heating lamps in there, deep bedding and I brought them warm water during the night. I do the same when I have old hens just not checking on them every three hours. Make sure you have no drafts in your coop because the cold breeze is not good. I also during the winter hang a very heavy plastic in the doorway so blasts of cold air is kept at bay.

Good luck with your new ones - I had been looking for Maran's where in the world did you find some locally???

A girl named Jen in Falcon has them. She advertises on Craigslist-Colo. Springs. I was amazed when I found her. Only 5 years ago I found out about the breed and had the impression they were very rare. She did tell me she went down South (to Florida?) to get her breeding stock. As with anything, popularity has made them more available.

Hey Melina. I am so glad you got your chicks. I bet they are so pretty. Are you talking about Cookoo (?) Marans? I want to get some of those next spring along with some Welsummer. I love the egg color. Are you near Col. Springs? My brother and sister both live there with all their kids. I have been a few times. But it's SO far away from Ga.

Enjoy those chicks.

Kris
