well she opened her UNLATCHED gate and ate 3/4 of a 5 gallon bucket of ripe apples. papa went for thera bloat. any other suggestions girls. i know she will need water and molasses. maybe pedialyte??? help here needed thanks sherrrye call into jake mt vet already

Did she bloat? Never had any problems with the cows eating apples, and bloating.
I did have a steer that bloated all the time. I had some stuff from the vet, which was mostly a veg. oil. I refilled the bottle one time with veg. oil, and it worked.
Google it-for sure.
HOpe she is alright.

Sherry, I give my 2 heifers apples every day. But not that much. They would eat every apple off the tree if they could. But when Mazie was with the bull and the other cows, there were apple trees in the field. They ate them all the time and never had a problem. But then I have never dealt with bloat before. I hope she will be ok. She might just have runnier poop than normal.

hi girls, vet jake said apples are a fermenter. so too many can bloat a cow or goat. i think the goats got some of them too. i am going to go walk her now. i had a job this am. i gave her bloat remedy. she is up eating hay. what a scare for me wow sherrye

I had a bull eat bushels of pears one year. Same thing, he got out of the fence and into the orchard. We Gave the bloat medication. The worst part was getting the medicine down his throat. He hated that. No other complications but the bull being angry over the medicine and my Mother (who was holding the rope) ending up in a big pile of manure. We still laugh over that one. Sorry Mom.

I hope Belle is alright. I've heard too that apples can ferment in the stomach, so she might feel a little off. Let us know how she is.

So glad Belle is allright.I know that was scary. On animal planet there was a calf that had gotten into some grain I think it was... anyway he was bloated and they inserted a needle in the stomach area to allow the gas to escape and then gave him an antibiotic. They said he would have died within a couple of hours if they had not gotten the pressure off. I bought a jersey heifer last week. Named her Buttercup. I am new to all this so reading the book Keeping a Family Cow. She is adjusting well to the rest of the critters......my horse Red, dogs Bella and Bear and cat Madge and chickens Fran and Fern. she is due to have her calf in December. My mailwoman has already told me she wants to buy fresh milk from me! I am excited but nervous too.

good morning al, christine thats a great cow book. they have a web site too. congrats. on the new cow. yipee for you and those that know you. belle is doing great. i cleaned up her mess last night. she was in the shop and everywhere when she got out. i am finding poop at all points of the property. crazy cow. all is good here. wish i could say i have babies but not yet. happy days sherrye

Sherry, good to see that Belle is ok. I'm sure you are very relieved about that.
Christine, I am so happy for you! This is her first calf? Are you all ready for this? My heifer Mazie is due in March. I am already nervous. I am checking her every day now. And she has 5 months to go. I noticed her teats are getting more noticable now. I am so excited to have a calf again.
I am only giving Mazie and Roxie a few apples a day in the morning now. Ya'll have scared me.
