Hi! I'm Tonya and I'm a farm girl!
I grew up on a farm in northern IL. Back then all I wanted to do was leave the farm. I spent 18 years trying to get out of there and the next 18 trying to get back!
That dream finally came to life 18 months ago when we moved to a farm in a small town in south western IL. We have 4.75 acres, but we're "in town". We bought a place that used to have a feed store, but it closed 3 years before we moved in when the man of the family died. Between his death and the fact that they couldn't make money from it any more lead the widow to close up shop and move to another small town to be near her kids. I feel a deep sense of awe in moving into a farm that was in a family for 4 generations. To this day I haven't removed some of the old baling wire that they tied and hung on a wall in the barn. It's my homage to the family that built this place. My DH now uses the Feed Store and it's dock for his office and storage area. He write software for small rural electric companies.
We have 6 kids, all adopted out of foster care. They are my life and the main reason we moved here. We can be close enough to visit their birth families, but yet we're in a small town and living a life of simplicity and love. It's totally what I dreamed about.
We also have 5 goats (mostly Saanens), 2 cows (nothing like home grown beef!), about 30 chickens (anyone need eggs?!) and 10 worthless barn cats. Actually they're not 'worthless'. While they may be lazy and plump, the little farm girl in me still gets giddy when I can find time to spend in the barn, covered in kitties and lulled by the purr of content mouser.
So that's me. A farm girl trying to get back to my roots and taking my family with me.

Wait until your kittes bring you their catch of the day & drop it at your feet as a gift! It is tooo funny! I keep telling my cats I don't want their mice or moles or whatever but they keep bringing them to me!! Welcome!!

It sounds great how you have moved into that farm and have given it such respect. It's nice seeing the character in an old place and keeping it there and enjoying it.

WELCOME!! Tanya I'm so jealous I'm trying to get back to a country life myself. It's not easy and I'm so excited that you've made it back. I like to think that farm life is mostly a state of mind. I hope you find lots of sisters here! I think you are such a wonderful person for doing foster care. In my opinion is a chosen job. I wish you the best!

Hi Tonya--I live in Alton--isn't New Douglas near Sorento? I have a cousin who lives in Sorento. I don't live on a farm but I grew up in the country. I believe in sustainable living--we can't keep taking from the Earth and not giving anything back. I think it's great that you're living in the country because of your kids--so many kids today don't have any idea where their food comes from, what it went through to get there, etc. I'd like to have chickens but can't because of a city ordinance. It sounds so bucolic, being in the barn surrounded by purring kitties. If New Douglas was a little closer, I'd volunteer to take some of those eggs off your hands!

Hooray! Another IL farmgirl has joined up! I'm sure you'll love it here Tonya. By the way, where is New Douglas? I've lived just southwest of Chicago all my life and have never heard of New Douglas.

Welcome! I'am new too. We have two children also adopted thru the foster care system, and are working at paperwork for #3 ! (remember that stuff? :( ) We had moved across the line into WA. state,since our daughter's adoption, so we're starting over! But we are so excited about 'meeting' our next child!! - your farm sounds fun! =)

Hi from sunny southern CA! Living in the suburbs and thinking that your place sounds great. If I am ever in IL...well, I have never been to the midwest anywhere, but someday! Hope you find a nice henhouse near you. I am having all kind of fun just working on the badgesand feeling 'farmish'.
