Hello, Does anyone grow grain on a small scale? Small in 5 acres or less. I can plant about 1 acre maybe 2. And what do you grow?? How do you harvest it and mill it?? Is it alot of work and is it worth it. My neighbors and I want to go in together and do this. Thanks Deborah
This year I plan on planting a pancake patch (as given the name by Gene Lodgson <--sp?) about growing a small scale grain. May also try amaranth. Presently, I buy my wheat berries for grinding from Whole Foods as this is the only local place I can get *organic* from. I use a Whispermill Jr (I think that's what it's called --I'm so bad with names, can ya tell? hee hee). It's a hand-grinder (as I really like non-electric things). It stone grinds everything & comes with two different stones (one for wet items like making peanut butter) & one for dry items (like grains). It's done a great job for grinding grains for making bread & cookies

Jewel, Thanks for the information. I will look for the book. And I have ordered this coming catalog from bountiful gardens. And I wish I could get one of those wonderful mills you have but it is a little to expensive for us right now. Thanks Deborah
Hey Deborah. I went to our little farmer's market a few weeks ago and met some people from S. Ga. that grow grains. I just emailed them to see where they are. They sell a 60 pound bag of whole wheat berries for just .50 a pound. I bought a pound of ground wheat and already made bread with some of theirs and mine and it was good. I cannot grow grain here. I wish we could. Several of my friend's and I just put in a huge order from Montanna wheat co. It will be here in Jan. But the price right now for a 50 pound bag of grain is $13.50. The same price it was when we first started buying grian about 10 years ago. So we are all getting several hundred pounds to last a few years. But I am going to buy some from these people in Ga too. They are Sonrisa Farm. I'll let you know where they are and if they are close by you could probably learn alot from them.
Kristin, That sounds great. I am wondering why you cant grow any grains. Most say that you can grow in our region. Or do you not have enough land to grow?? And I would love to know more when you find out about it. Thanks Deborah
