If you go to Elizabeth's blog, Jacob's first scan showed shrinkage of the tumors, and the ones in his lung have all but disappeared. Also, the neighborhood had a huge successful benefit dinner. Keep up the prayers. |

Wonderful news, Lisa. Funny, I was thinking about them in the shower this morning (where I do most of my thinking!). I'm glad to learn this positive news.

Little by little. I am so glad that things are better. We take life for granted so much, and it is in situations like this, that makes one realize that life is very fragile. Please keep us posted regarding how things are progressing, so we can keep up on top of it!

Another update on Jacob: he is 1/4th through his treatment now. As someone posted earlier...the first scans show that the tumors in his lungs are almost gone now so it is working!
His body is responding well to the chemo and he has not had any nausea from it. The only issues he has had so far is blood counts dropping, which is to be expected, but they always rise pretty good before his next round of chemo. He has had to have three blood transfusions due to low hemoglobin counts (another thing to be expected). Other than being a bit more tired and low key he has continued to be our happy little guy and we could not wish for more right now.
Jacob and I arrived home on Saturday after an overnight hospital stay for chemo. This Friday and next Friday he will have out-patient chemo and then on April 1st we will have another overnight stay. I just saw on our schedule that he will have a 4 day hospital stay over Easter, which is disappointing since he also missed Christmas at home but we will just tell the Easter Bunny to wait until we are home to visit us.
We pray, pray, pray that this treatment works and kills every last cancer cell in his body. We also pray that the study we are in helps keep a reaccurance from happening, as that is an all too common thing in anaplasia Wilm's Tumor. We place our trust in God to know what is best...it's scary sometimes but what other option is there?! :)
Thank you all for your continued thoughts and prays and for the little notes that Jacob still receives. One of the highlights of his day is mail time now. :) -Elizabeth www.trenchesofmommyhood.blogspot.com |

Elizabeth, you have made serious head-way! I'm sure life is settling anew...Cancer, as a way of life, is becoming more routine and more and more enfolded into the new normal. I hate how that's how it has to be and at the same time I never cease to be amazed how resilient and flexible the spirit is that enables one to do this. You do what you have to, indeed but eventually 'you do what you have to' becomes instilled with a terrific sense of grace. This is where you are now.
Jacob!! LOVELY guy..What a champ! I'm so glad you mentioned that he is LOVING to get mail. I'll be sure to send him something. Getting mail NEVER gets old and when life is so confined and limited these small things matter so much more!!
My thoughts are of you always. I'm holding my breath, as you are. I'm praying for days filled to overflowing with good memories and cherished moments. It's all we ever have but moreso when staring down the throat of a nasty beast!
My love to you and yours always! ~julia

Jacob is HALF WAY through his treatment now! 10 chemo sessions down, 10 more to go! Besides one three day stay in the hospital for a fever (which I think was due to a blood transfusion) and six blood transfusions due to low Hemoglobin he has been doing great. His energy level is down somewhat but there are still times that he wrestles with his brother or jumps around the house! He has been enjoying the nice weather recently and likes to sit outside on the porch and draw. He has another out-patient chemo this week and then a 4 day hospital stay starting on Good Friday and ending on Monday after Easter (poor boy missed Christmas and now Easter at home!). Then three weeks off (though I won't be surprised if he has to get blood in between there). He has been enjoying all your cards and little surprises. He now asks when the mail will be here and then asks if he got anything. :) Thank you so much for making his days bright. -Elizabeth |

Elizabeth, Thanks so much for the update. Keeping you all in my prayers, especially Jacob. He has been such a little "trooper" through all of this - so glad he is at the half-way mark. How is Mommy holding up? and the rest of the family? It is hard on everyone. I am praying things are as normal as possible through this tough time. So glad Spring is here :) It is so "life giving" to me. Hugs and prayers, Ruth

When the doctors told me that this is often easier on the child going through the treatment than the parents I thought "Whatever!"
I think it's true though. Jacob takes it one day at a time. He knows he has cancer and knows that the chemo is fighting the cancer. It is straight forward for him. Which is good.
I on the other hand think too much. I worry about Jacob. I worry about the other two kids who are also losing a part of their childhood and who have a completely different life than a few months ago. I feel sorry for them all as they have a new mommy...a stressed out and not so happy mommy, though I try to pretend and make everything normal for them. I feel sorry for Ben since I blame him too much for not taking some of the stress off me. I guess I feel too guilty all of the time about things that I can not control.
But even with that said, there are days where I feel almost normal. Happy. At peace. I savor those days. I won't lie though - this sucks!! I am stressed, beyond exhausted, and sad. When I say that life can start to return to normal it is a "new normal". You get used to the sad and scared feelings...they never leave, but you get used to feeling that way. You get used to the stress and the tiredness. I think the "new normal" of cancer just means that you learn to accept all the bad things that are happening to you at the moment.
And with ALL that said, I can also say that there are many blessings to be found on this journey. Going through cancer is both a curse (a horrible one!) and yet a blessing. It makes you savor life. It makes you aware of how fragile life is and to really live each day to the fullest. It brings out the good in people. It shows you the angels and the true friends in your life (and many of you are both to me!). It's odd to say that, really, but not every moment of this journey has been a curse. I've learned more about myself and life in the past four months than I have in my whole 28 years of life. Jacob has shown me how strong a child can be and how much more brave they can be than adults. He has taught me so much and for that I am grateful.
So short answer to your question, Ruth, is that most days are hard and horrible, and yet we are still blessed. :) -Elizabeth |
