| oh those beans produce the prettiest flowers!!! and they have long vines that are just lovely. They grow easily but mine did not produce a large amount of beans at all. |

I grow these every year, and LOVE them! I have a small amount saved from last year, how many are you looking for?
I grow them at my front door/porch - They grow ground to roofline and bend over - cute little red and white flowers, and late season I get a TON of green beans! I love seeing people's faces when they come to my house and realize that those are actually green beans growing all over the pretty green vines. I've had people walking by comment on how neat the vines look!
My Grandma told me that back in the day (she's 86), "all the ladies" grew them on their front porches. So it's kind of a neat, retro thing to do!!

I do not want to take any of yours if you only kept some to redo yours. I can buy some on ebay and other online stores. I really just wanted to find out more about them. So how do you cook yours. as the bean or the pod? They say the bean has a little bit of toxin in it so to cook it really well. do you have to drain them and rinse them afterwords to get the toxins out of the water or does that matter?

I have had them in the past. I had gotten them from Burpees. They grew well. I see that one can still buy them there at $3.25 for 1-1/2 oz. There is another site that friends have used...I never have..but they have heirloom seeds. It is called Victory Seeds. They sell 1 oz for $2.25. I plan on ordering some fresh seed, as what I planted last year had poor results. Of course, we had a crummy growing season. Good luck.

I bought Scarlet Runner Beans and all my garden seed from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. They are a WONDERFUL company from Missouri that produce heirloom non-GMO seeds with a catalog of over 1300 seed varieties. Their web address is rareseeds.com.I highly recommed them!!!!

I cook them in the pod as immature greenbeans - I mean the bean hasn't developed fully in them yet. Well actually we eat them raw lots of times - sitting on the front porch watching the kids ride their bicycles on the sidewalk, I just munch... grin...
I froze alot too, and cook them in this super great, easy recipe I found for the crockpot... a ham, a couple of cups of chicken bouillion, a tablespoon or so of minced garlic, green beans (2 cups?), a diced onion, 2 or 3 cups of quartered new potatoes... that's it. Crockpot on Low all day.
As fresh green beans, you can't really tell them from a regular bush bean, other than they're a flatter pod. Juicy and tasty!!
Gee thanks, it's 19 degrees out and blusteringly cold as snow comes in tonight, and I'm having summer flashbacks to fresh green beans!!!

TJ---so you pick them as a pod that is green and use them as green beans? Is that what you are saying. or do you pick them and open them and use the bean inside early instead of waiting till they get dark with dots on them??

I don't use the bean itself as a bean - I just pick the greenbean pod, and eat the whole thing, like any other greenbean (or sugar snap pea).
The main reason being they are really delicious just as a regular greenbean! But also, our growing season here is normally too short for ground-planted runner beans to fully dry-out on the vine (May 15-Sept 15, and the ground doesn't get warmed up good to really start green beans growing until late June). So I just never really paid too much attention to their "other life" as a dry bean! I was surprised and pleased to get the cup or so of dried beans that I did get this year, we had such a late first freeze it was amazing!
