Tennessee Cheese, Hot volcano, Hot serrano (new to me) and hot Amando, (new to me). They all require bottom heat but I don't have a heat mat so I'm using a heating pad. Hope I don't need the heat pad, I need bottom heat too. It is about 10 degrees here and supposed to go below 0 tonight. I will buy the rest of my peppers (bells and jalapeno) from the greenhouse. I start the varities that I can't buy.

The herbs I started a couple of weeks ago and growing like crazy. Think I'll get some basil started just to have some fresh. Will be another 2 months before I plant outside.

if using the heating pad just be careful that you put a towel or something down to keep the mat from getting wet. you don't want to receive a shock. but the heating pad should work for you.
temperature of the soil needs to be 70 degrees for peppers to germinate.

Kathy, no I do not have a greenhouse. I had one, twice. Blew away, twice. The last time the insurance paid me a fraction of what it cost to rebuild. I hung on to the money and last month bought a 3 tier grow light stand from Gardeners Supply. I put it in the kitchen. There is room for 6 big greenhouse trays, each with 28 individual pots. That is 168 plants. That is more plants than I want to put out. May start some flowers later. My energy level is not what it used to be so won't get to crazy with the flowers. I usually start from seed only the things that I can't buy at the nursery. I am such a nonconformist that I don't want to plant what everyone else is planting.

Tina, The trays that the pots sit in are the kind that don't have drain holes. The heat pad is wrapped in a towel. Taking all the precautions. Thank you. Sounds like you have had some experience starting peppers.
