Hello Everyone!
Just wondered if any of you are planting seeds according to the moon phases. I'm trying to plant all of my seeds this year by the chart.
My grandfather always did this and he sure had a green thumb!
My only problem is patience...LOL...I want to plant NOW!
There are not that many windows of opportunity for the types of seed I have to start a lot of, so that may be a challenge too.
Anyone else? Have you done this before? I tried it one year but didn't stick with it. I'm determined now!

I learned to garden from my Daddy. I ask him one time if he planted 'by the sign'. He said, if the weather is right and the ground is ready and you have time and are ready, Then the sign is right. I have gardened for over 60 years. I am sure during that time I have planted something is the right sign. My neighbors think I have a great garden. Not really, I just don't tell them about the failures. I am still learning. A couple of years ago I set out several bell pepper plants and didn't get a single pepper. Must have been the moon??

An elderly client of ours, Georgetta, then 98 years old, was a sharecroppers daughter in rural North Carolina. When I first started to think about a garden, I recall sitting with her in her house, helping her with some documents and we started talking about gardening. I told her I wanted to get my peas in the ground soon...she took a look at her calendar on the wall and said, "naw, chile', you too late. The moon done turned." And you know what? I didn't plant peas that year!

The next year, I decided to use my Great Grandfather's rule of thumb, which was to have potatoes in the ground by Good Friday, and peas the week after. I'd heard tell of him planting potatoes in snow, and they never starved, so I figured I'd do what he did! I've always had luck that way, but still have never planted with the moon phases. Would be interested to see how it pans out!

I would like to know how it turns out too - seems like there must be something to it. I was going to try a couple years ago but the days I was supposed to plant were not days when my life cooperated by giving my time to plant so that was that.

Last year someone on these forums posted plant the peas on st- patrick's day. I thought, sure why not. Last year the pea crop at my house was amazing couldn't even eat all the peas that came in and a bunch went to waste, what a shame. but this year and my canner have plans.

I like the potatoes in by good friday... might just borrow that bit of knowledge

Also I am in South Central PA

I'm in southern NY, so my plants are going into containers, but I'm sticking with the phases on my calendar! So far so good...I'll post when the seedlings start up! The phases when you're NOT supposed to plant sound scary! LOL The chart says DO NOT PLANT, INFERTILE in big letters, and states GOOD TIME TO KILL BRUSH...YIKES!

I make my soap by the phases of the moon! Why not planting? It's all about gravitational pull......

I found a wonderful old gardener's clock at a yard sale and it has all the info about what to plant when and the moon phases etc and this year we are going to try to go by that for the planting...will let you all know how it went this fall!

My tomatoes are up in RECORD TIME! If all the seedlings react like this, it's looking GREAT!

Hello, everyone. I'm still researching and learning before I try to plant anything. Where could I find a reliable planting guide? Is there a book you'd recommend, or a chart of some kind I should find? I'd really appreciate any help. I live in Central TX.

Emily,
The potatoes in the ground by Good Friday has always served me well. If the ground isn't too moist, I'll plant my peas then, too, or wait a week. Like I said, my Great Grandparents had a massive garden--and according to my grandmother and Aunts, there was always ample food :)
