| Hi there. I'm planning on starting a big organic garden next year and am collecting information on it this summer. Where can I get good seeds and seedlings from? Are there any distributors/companies you recommend? I want to make sure I get natural, non-genetically modified plants. My mother and I are going to plant some tomatoes and a few things this week, but we're preparing for a BIG garden next year. Anyone have any insight? I'm in love with farming and the country but don't know a whole lot about it yet! |

Hi Rachelleigh, I went through my favorites and... Here is some information to help you get started:
Seeds of Change -seed catalog- 100% certified organic seeds. a must have catalog. www.seedsofchange.com
www.nicholsgardennursery.com Super for herb seed and some organic.
www.GardensAlive.com this is a supply catalog almost everything you need is here (to garden as organic as possible) and loads of info. on bad bugs good bugs and diseases of plants ect.
something you might be interested in is Seed Savers exchange they don't sell seed they net work to put gardeners in touch with each other, gardeners who are cultivating and selling and trading seed, these people are dedicated to preserving seeds of vegies ect. that are in danger of becoming extinct. special heirloom varieties ect. for info. send 1$ to-- S.S.E. 3076 North winn Road. www.rodaleorganicstyle.com is a magazine you and your mom will both like -fun interesting, slick but also on the healthy side. and you probably know about organiic gardening magazine you can get at any large book store.
one last suggestion- I think garlic is extremely important health- wise and should be in every garden. you may want to read up on it and maybe order the seed from Maryjane or www.filareefarm.com Hope this helps, Kathy

I'm really glad I remembered that there were older pages layered on this thread. I'm looking into all of these catalogues and websites! Very, very helpful info for a newbie like me. Hope you are all well!

I have seeds from Pinetree, Terrior Seeds, Seeds of Change, Seed Savers and High Mowing Seeds, I think that is it. . . I found Terrior seeds this year actually because I was looking high and low for Munchen Bier radishes and they were the first ones with a website to pop up!
A friend of mine told me that Baker Creek seeds does testing on their seeds to verify their integrity of being GM free. I guess it is becoming very difficult to get 100% free GM seed now and if they offer organic its tested. I will have to check them out next year as I already have all my seeds.
I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that I know about. Good luck!

| Seed Savers Exchange does have a catalog and they do sell seeds, I buy plenty from them. The only way to get the catalog you are talking about is by becoming a member then you get the "special" catalog. |

I have been goin through a similar situation huntin out a healthier and better way to garden. I have been gardenin my whole life, so it's not a stupid question. It's definitely not like the seed companies are rushin to give out the info or help people do things the right way. I do like seed savers aas all their seed is heirloom and garaunteed non-gmo. They have a decent organic selection as well. I'm not quite ready to go completely organic. I'm still tryin to find heirloom varieties to replace all our hybrid varities as far as taste preference goes. I'll get there!
