I was just wondering if there were any other farmgirls out there that do Mixed Media art journaling or makes hand bound journals. It has become a passion of mine. Since my husbands passing in July 2010 I had crawled into a very dark hole, leaving doing anything artsy alone. He was my biggest cheerleader. About a month ago I finally wanted to dig back in. It has lead me to Art Journaling and book binding. Creating my own journals to do the art in is so wonderful. I am also creating smaller little books for gifts. I will share a couple pictures of a few of the journals I have made. If anyone is interested I would love to share the process or get any tips.

Hope there are a few of you out there!!

Kristy,
Your journal is beautiful. I just started reading Debbie Macomber's Twenty Wishes and in the book, one of the ladies starts a twenty wish journal. I am going to Michaels tonight and picking out a scrapbooking journal to start my own Twenty Wish journal. I also have the materials and will be starting an art journal soon. And I would love to get into ATC (artist trading cards) as well. hugs Marcy

Kristy I'm so glad you are doing creative things again. That is so good for healing your mind. My family and I work on them together. I alter just about any kind of book there is. We add journaling papers to vintage books and rebind them ourself. My husband does that part and I do all the embellishments.
You can see some of them on my etsy site Jeanpatchbymk. The books that I embellish takes a lot of work and weeks to do. I paint the pages so that has to dry then I add collage papers and such so then that has to dry and then layers of fabric and lace and on and on. So by the time I'm done it is a true work of art and transformed into something really beautiful.
I'll be taking my first one to a local gift shop and see if it sells. It will be pricey due to all the time involved and extras. One women that does them in England sells a small 7x5 for $80.00! And that's just a journal she covers not a whole book like mine.

Marsha... Thank you ! Yes it is so very healing to me. I have not done this type of journaling before and I am loving it !!! Your journals/books sound wonderful. I will jump over and take a peak ! I am taking online classes now with 2 different artists and having a blast. Finally at uhh.. soon to be 54... I am persuing what I love!! The time has come for me to do what I love. No more excuses !! lol !! I will post the page I did last night. It's helped me to work through my feelings about my husbands passing this past July. So it may seem ,uhhh, depressing to some. But I am putting into words/art what my heart is feeling !!! Think that is the purpose ! lol !!
I know how much time is put into these lovelys and I'm sure they be worth every dime of $80 !! Good luck on your adventure !!

I would love to share any info I have on journal making ,ATCs things like that. How about I start with a list of things you need...
1.Paper..what you use depends on what you are using it for. For a writting journal anything from notebook paper to cardstock. For an art journal , I use 140# Water color paper. It can take all sorts of medias.
2.Some sort of paper cutter or a ruler to tear your pages. I suggest if you use a cutter make sure it can hold at least a 12 " side sheet of paper.
3. an awl or something to punch the holes in your signitures ( the grouping of papers you create)
4. I found some waxed binding cord on line. But to start out and see if I could even do this I used dental floss !! lol !
5. some kind of blunt needle. I used a big tapestry needle. I have since gotten curved binding needles and it is sooo much easier to work with.
6. Two pieces of cardboard. I used the back cover off an old notebook for my first one.
7. Something to cover your 2 covers... fabric, paints decoupage...make it yours
Thats the supply list. Recycle whatever you have. Paper sacks make fun little sketch books. Cardboard cereal boxes. I double these to make covers a bit stronger to hold your stitching.
Theres a start. I will try to shoot some pictures as I am working on my next journal to show you the steps I take. You can also go to Youtube and there are great step by step videos to watch. I love the coptic style of binding. A fast and fun one is Japanese Punch binding... Have fun. Email me if you have any other questions.

I have just recently started art journaling. mine are kind of basic so far, but I am really excited about getting into it more. I haven't bound my own, right now I'm just using a pretty old journal of recycled paper that I have had forever and never had a use for. I'd really like to learn how to start from scratch though so I can make it even more personalized.

Thank you sisters ! It is really a wonderful source of comfort and joy to me to be doing these journals. I love doing the art journals and will share a few pages I have done. Recycling old journals or even old books is awesome !! I am also going to work on an altered book soon. That just looks like tooooo much fun ! Hope to shoot some pics today to share with you all. Please do the same...remember what my teachers have driven into me... It is YOUR JOURNAL... do what YOU love. Make it your own in every way. It's not to be judged..you are creating for your enjoyment or that of someone you are making it for. We all have different likes and our own style. Just play.. this is how we learn !! Hugs and blessings to you all !!!

I've recently discovered "Praying in Color" and it has helped me immensely through some very difficult times for me over the past few months. I highly recommend it....it is helping me express myself when my words and prayers just won't come. Here is a website and I think she has a book too.

Kristy~ You're journals are beautiful! I believe writing our thoughts and feelings down can give us a great feeling of relief, especially if you are like me and have trouble voicing/sharing your thoughts with another person. I'm sure your hubby would be so happy to know you are back on the creatin train again. :) I was going to make a gratitude journal back at Christmas, but it never got finished. I found an old Baptist Hymnal and coffee dyed some of the pages and then lost my train of thought and couldn't think of where to go from there. And of course with all the other craziness that the holidays bring, I pushed it aside. I've joined back in to the mail-art swap and have been feeling lured more and more into learning about paper crafting and mixed media. Would you consider starting a "create-a-long-journal", a place where (possibly a thread on MJF or a blog post) you could teach us gals in a kind of a step-by-step process, just so we could learn the basics of creating a journal? We could show pics of our journals as we work through the process and have loads of fun!

Melanie... I would love to do that. I need to work on my photos to help out with the process. It is hard to explain in words alone. Especially the needle binding. I will work on this and let everyone know when I have it lined out. Thank you for giving me something that I can give back to others !! I need to share what brings my joy and would love nothing more than to share what I have learned !! Thank you all so much. I will work on this and YES.. please post pictures of your journals when I do !!!

Oooooo I can't wait Kristy! The kids and I went to the library the other day and I picked up a couple of books on altered art. I love it! I think this is something I'm really going to love doing. I do my best work when I don't have to follow rigid rules or patterns. :)

Kristy, I just love your art journal! It's so nice of you to share this with us! I have been making small books from paper bags- more crafty than artsy, I'm afraid. But your books are just beautiful and I would love to start going in that direction w/ my books. Thank you so much for expanding my horizons! And I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of your husband. Your art must be such a comfort. I look forward to seeing more examples of your work! MaggieMB |
