I thought some of you would like to read about our adventures of keeping hens through our first winter. I had to decide on heating the coop or not heating the coop:

It was a tough one for North Texas. All of my wonderful, spoiled girls made it through. Heck, I'm happy I made it through. I've been here all my life and freezing weather and snow are so rare I didn't know what to do with my self much less my animals.

Love,
Tanna

Tanna, I keep a 250 watt red bulb on during the bitter nights (WELL out of chicken's reach). We got down to about 10 degrees here and the only thing that happened was a RIR roo got frostbite to the comb. You have had a lot more snow and ice than we did....I didn't know what to do with myself either, lol!!! :0)

I did start getting a little stir crazy. I LOVE being at home with my family but I also like being outside. Outside just wasn't an option until this week. We've gone from ice and wind chills to 75 degrees and sunny! It's crazy TX weather.

Glad to hear your chickens are doing well too! I was crazy with worry about mine. I wanted to check on them constantly but I didn't want to open the coop up to the wind. I'll be a lot better next year.
