I was so looking forward to planting a garden this year! This is our first planting season off the farm. The areas I have to plant are bordered by our fence. I was hoping to get by one more year without replacing the fence, but rain and crazy winds have proven this impossible. its falling. I can't replace the fence without trampling my garden! My DH works 7 days a week, and more often than not, its graveyard, so it is going to take us forever.
Cheryl suggested a wonderful, fun idea. She suggested I plant my seed and grow starters in egg shells. I think my girls would love to help with that. I was curious if any of you have done this, and if you have any advice? When the new fence us up and painted, I can crack the shell, and plant the whole thing! The added calcium would be great for tomatoes! Any plant suggestions?

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.

Oh! I love that idea, Annette! I remember seeing that done in a magazine a loooong time ago, but have never tried! Thank you for the suggestion! :) So sorry about the garden fence. - Nini

Nini, I'm certainly going to try it, so I'll post progress and pics, as it goes. Excited as my girls I think.

We did that last year. This year I am finding a new way to do it. It was quite messey and didnt work as well as the magazine said it would. Maybe try just a few with your girls but dont start everything this way.

MARI-LYN.
Thanks for the heads up! I truely dislike messy! We will still try it, but maybe 4-5 plants and see how it goes. I think the whole shabang will go on an old cookie sheet, to try to confine the mess in one spot.

I have never heard of this method before but now I have to try it too! It does sound messy but that's alright with me as it's rather impossible for me to be involved in something without some mess.

I tried it last year in the green house and it didn't work like I thought it would...not trying to discourage you. I think this year I will try a few and when I crack my eggs, purposely crack them on the upper part to leave a larger bottom part to use for the seedling. I think it is a wonderful green replacement for buying seed starting stuff each year. I would like to hear how it goes for everyone once you get started. Another thing I have heard is just using your egg carton (if you don't have your own chickens and just plant your seeds in them. Most are biodegradable in the soil when you plant them.

We cut TOILET PAPER TUBES in half, and line them up on an old sided tray, then fill them with soil and use them like peat pots! The roots grow out through the bottom and you can plant the whole thing into the ground. Free and easy! I cut white plastic lids (whipped topping, yogurt, margarine tub LIDS) into pointed markers and label them with a Sharpie. ALSO FREE! :)
The TUBS themselves can be used as starter pots if you punch holes into the bottom. I heat my fireplace poker in the woodstove and use it to "melt" holes into the bottom, so the plastic doesn't split. Have fun planting! HAPPY GARDENING!

Elizabeth,
I think the toilet paper tubes is a wonderful idea. We need to start a few tomatoes, soon, so I think I will have my little ones try that. We will do a few egg shells too, but they are fradgle, so I have to have the kids watch. They can be much more hands on with the tubes! Thanks for the tip!! The kids will love it!
