I recently bought some starts of grapes. We live on the WA coast. Does anyone know if it is OK to plant them now, or should I wait till all chance of frost is over? last year we went nuts with berries and have them all fenced in for deer...the bear likes them too ...actually my old dog, Molly liked them too. I have asparagus starts too and was wondering about them also....Help!

Thanks for posting this forum, Mary! I also would like to know the safest way to transplant the vines. My mother-in-law passed a few years ago, and has the most wonderful "fence" of grapevines in her yard. I know that she would want all of the kids to have part of them - part of her - growing in their yards, too. We have tried transplanting to no avail a couple of times, which broke my heart. If anyone has any suggestions for that as well, I would really appreciate it! - Nini

Grapes must be on the mind today-Just last night DH and I were discussing the fact that 17 years ago when we bought this "boat" of a house we should have started a grape arbor-I made my first concord grape jelly last fall and fell in love with the whole process of jelly making. I know it takes a LONG time to establish a good grape arbor-SIGH! But, we plan on giving it a try. I'm not sure how to go about it so research is key. No worries about bears or dear here in town, but I am concerned about the birds!
Any good advice about what type of grape to plant here in the UP would also be greatly appreciated!

My dad planted his first starts after the frost just to be sure. He says you never know if they were well cared for before you got them or not, so better to be safe.
As for the asparagus, watch the dog close on those! I've never met a dog who didn't love to eat them to the ground and even dig them up to munch on them!

Just to update...I contacted a local winery (Three Fold Vine Winery)about 100 miles from here located in the Garden Peninsula near a very unique State Park called Fayette asking for information about types of grapes to grow in our area... Anyway, they had a few suggestions for grape growing here in the Great North Woods including a hardy grape called "Valiant" and "King of the North." Surprisingly HARDY grape plants-Yippee!!
Come to find out the owner of this vineyard which is (about 450 acres) used to live in a little town where I went to high school about 20-minutes from where I live now. Small world huh?
She was more than helpful and I am looking forward to visiting the winery this summer.
Asparagus??? My Truman (Jack Russell) LOVES asparagus and so do I!
