Back in January, the 15th to be exact, I slipped out in the yard and went boom. Extreme agony, a trip to the ER via ambulance with some cute paramedics, and then surgery on the 24th. I now have been given the go-ahead to walk. Well, yeah, gee, that would be nice but my leg feels like a wet noodle! No muscle. I am doing isometrics and all that, but I just want it to get stronger NOW because I am so tired of hobbling around on crutches. I have been using a knee scooter to get around the house as a borrowed wheelchair was a pain in the patooty.

So, I guess I'm just asking for words of encouragement because this has gotten very old very quick and I get frustrated when I can't just get up and go retrieve something from the kitchen or the kids' rooms or wherever. Oh, and stairs are out of the question. Can't go downstairs for anything, and this I don't mind when it comes to laundry! Bless my husband for doing all that while I heal. But there are things I need downstairs and have to ask the kids or the hubby to go down and get them for me. I just want to go down there on my own. Guess I must wait still for that.

OW! OW! OW!!! Kristen! You poor thing! I will pray for your speedy and perfect recovery! I just can't even imagine what that must be like! Just remember it won't last forever, and maybe you can enjoy a little pampering for now. :) Just take care of yourself so you can get better! No unnecessary risk taking, okay? :) Hugs - Nini

Why don't you ask the doctor to give you a script for physical therapy? I tore the muscles across my upper back years ago and after they healed I went in 3 times a week for 1 month and then exercies after that so I could use my arms for things like cleaning and sweeping and such.

Then, I was in a car accident in 2008 and tore the left rotator cuff and again 1 month of p.t. and exercises for life now. I have to stretch it every morning for 20 reps and then it slowly tightens back up by evening and then my dh massages it so I can sleep without terrible pain.

Yep, I just may do that as it's almost been a week since I saw the surgeon. It shouldn't take this long to figure out how to walk. I will most likely have physical therapy for my ankle in 4 weeks, however, and I'm ok with that.

Kristen,
Sending you prayers for fast healing. I shattered both sides of my left ankle in 1998. Very painful. I had surgery and now wear my bling on the inside. I had a second floor apartment, a clutch in my car and 3 feet of snow on the ground. I was also self-employed at the time painting murals. I was in the middle of a full room mural and had the ceiling to finish. I had crutches for four weeks and then a walking cast for 4 more. I was up on that ladder with my cast, I needed the money. So I feel for you. I can still vividly remember the pain.

Ugh, so much pain, girls! Yep, the walking cast thing, I have a black velcro boot thing. Hate it, but I have to wear it in order to walk.

I have eight screws and a metal plate in my foot. I'll have fun at the airport security checkpoint! LOL

OW!!!!! I did a bad break about three years ago to my ankle and had the same problem. You'd think since you've been walking on that darned leg all your life you'd be able to just hop right back up and walk on it once the break was all mended, but it doesn't work that way. It's going to take a bit of time to get the muscles back in shape. I feel for ya! *hugs*

Thanks, Annika, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me since my leg is being so annoying.

Today, however, it seems a bit stronger (I've been doing isometrics for a while) and maybe by tomorrow I won't need the crutches. I hope and pray! My hubby told me yesterday that he didn't want to see me using the crutches tonight. When I thought about that this morning before I got out of bed, I about burst into tears because it seems so stressful. Too much pressure on me! But I think he was just trying to get me to try harder.

Well, I'm still hobbling on the crutches. Yesterday afternoon, I tried to walk along the windowsill in the bedroom. It's high and I could just rest my arm on it if needed. Well, I managed three small steps but when I tried again my foot protested. It started to hurt. Waaaaa!!! I so want to walk without the stupid crutches! I think I need to be more patient.

Oh Goodness! I've never broken anything, thank goodness, but I can imagine how awful it is. Hope you feel better and mend quickly! Hang in there!

I'm starting to get depressed. I really want to walk!!!! I left a message with the surgeon's office to talk about physical therapy both for range-of-motion exercises for my ankle (because I just can't get it to move very far) and for walking. It hurts to put weight on my ankle.

As I was walking with crutches to the bathroom, I burst into tears because it's just all so annoying and I am sick of the crutches! The surgeon said I should be walking by now (he told me to walk at my last appointment) but I know everybody is different. Thankfully my wonderful hubby was nearby and let me cry on his shoulder. He reassured me I'd be walking again, but I just wish it were NOW.

Krissy, About 6 years ago I was carrying my then 2 year old son downstairs after his nap and missed the last step. I broke my foot and ankle in 6 places. We had just put our house on the market and our new house was only weeks away from being done. Thank goodness my mother was able and willing to pitch in and help with my toddler and keeping my house ready for showings. I remember going up and down the stairs on my butt, feeling pathetic and depressed. It felt wrong that they expected someone clutzy enough to fall and brake their ankle, to be coordinated enough to navigate stairs on crutches! It took quite awhile for my ankle to feel stong again, but one day you will be walking and realize that you weren't even thinking about your ankle! You are in my prayers.

Thank you all for the support! I really really need it!

I spoke to the physician's assistant yesterday and he did say that everyone is different and not to expect miraculous healing but to take it easy. He suggested certain stretches to do with my foot/ankle and for me to call next week (my surgeon is off this week) to let them know how I'm progressing.

Wendy, I don't know how in the world you managed stairs with crutches. Oh my goodness! I can't do that at all without hubby holding on to me! I only have 3-4 front porch steps to deal with but I avoid the downstairs part of my house like the plague!

My in-laws brought over a walker for me to borrow. I'll see if that makes things easier.

Krissy, I didn't manage very well. I went to a party at a friends house and had to get up her stairs to get inside. One of the other guests was a physical therapist and he said he had never seen anyone more awkward on crutches in his whole life. I didn't have a choice but to figure out how to get upstairs because my bedroom was up there. I did spend the first few nights on a mattress on the living room floor because I couldn't face going upstairs. I hope that the walker helps. I had an office chair on wheels and scooted around my downstairs on it!

I have been renting a knee scooter since January and it is 100 times better than a wheelchair. I still use it when I need to pick things up, like if I'm in the kitchen or something. Every time besides that, I've been on the crutches.

Krissy, Are they going to send you to PT? They really need to do that to help you learn the proper way to do your exercises to get your leg strong again. I was in a walking boot for the better part of a year before surgery then after surgery, my leg was so weak I could hardly go upstairs. Took a while to get my muscle back in that leg! I'll be praying for you - keep positive - it will get better :)
Hugs, Ruth

Ruth, yes, I will be having PT in April. I have been doing isometrics on my leg since after surgery but revamped my routine recently and I can tell my leg is getting stronger. Yes, I totally understand when you said your leg was so weak you could hardly go upstairs. Mine looked like some little ol' chicken leg and was worthless for a while but it's getting better.

I tried walking on Sunday. I managed to go the length of the kitchen and then into the living room. I was so thrilled that I called my parents and my inlaws. My youngest was the only one home besides me and he was saying, "MOM!!! Look at you!!!" It was so neat. However, I think I overdid it because now my foot hurts. Not the ankle, but another area of the foot. Giving it a rest today.

I had to reschedule my appointment for the surgeon - it was set for tomorrow but I can't go there by myself (my hubby is in school) and with the kids in tow (they are on Spring break this week), so I changed the appointment for next week when hubby can drive (or maybe I can drive, but I would like him along, just in case).
