I have a very good friend who is using the Paleo diet to help keep her MS under control. She says it is working on both keeping her MS from flaring up and helping her to feel better and stronger.
Hey, whatever works. I'm trying to slowly get my family to eat less meat more veggies and grains and legumes. It takes me more time to prepare meals. I have to think ahead. Plus, at the same time, we are trying to eat more local foods. We've been hitting the farmers market a lot more for veggies and fruits and last week, I found a local farmer selling meat!! Glorious find!! Grass fed, no hormones, no antibiotics.....beef that is like free range chickens only without feathers.
Last night, I went to my local Whole Foods market and was chatting with the butcher while buying a whole chicken (no hormones or antibiotics.....)and I asked him where the meat came from and he shrugged his shoulders and said "I don't know. Iowa I think?" I took my chicken and left. I don't think I'll be buying my 'local' meat from Whole Foods any more. I just couldn't believe his attitude. It's considered 'local' if it's cut, cleaned and wrapped locally. Wow, what a way to open my eyes. I really need to search a little harder for local meat. I have my garden and greenhouse for my own veggies, but that only goes so far.
My path to getting healthy gets hard sometime. I'm not going to stop trying though.
Hugs and Squishies!!

I am very interested in the Paleo diet. I really want to cut out the processed food from my pantry and have my entire family eat more healthy foods. All in all, we do pretty good in eating lots of fish and veges, but the chips and cookies need to go! I find myself grazing when I get home from work..because I'm starving. I think this is more willpower and making better choices because the healthy stuff is right there too! I have cut out the dairy and now use soy or almond milk (not sure if that is good or not) in my mochas, but need to cut out the cheeses (I LOVE cheese!). Lorie, I can be your 1-800-Don't-Touch-the-Donut Friend!

Hi Sebrena! There are some great Paleo books out there ( I have them all) and some great info on the web. I buy my food from a local organic farmer. There's nothing like the taste of no hormone, no antibiotic, free ranging, pastured pork, beef, chicken, and wild caught fish! It's amazing how just going back to what our DNA is used to how quickly the body regulates itself and helps fight, and prevent many diseases (High Cholesterol, Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer's, etc). Gluten gives you nothing but a big belly and soy limits your bodies ability to absorb vitamins and minerals in your food and function properly. We need regular protein with eyes so our bodies are at their best . I'm so glad you'll be there to support me.

Hi Kathy! I had the same Whole Foods experience a few months back when I couldn't get my order in to my organic farmer. We pay so much more for the food at these type of stores is sad. I wish they would train their butchers like they train their cheese staff...LOL...they can tell you everything about their cheeses.

Thank you for the link, Lorie! I am definetely doing more research and incorporate the good for you stuff into our pantry. We eat wild-caught fish (salmon, sea bass, tuna, ling cod) at least 3 times a week..sometimes every night as my husband is a fishing guide and our family is avid fisherman (and woman!). We do need to find a good source of fre-ranging chicken & meat. I am going to locate a couple of these books. Talk soon!

Sebrena, I just realized you live in Olympia . I use to live in Gig Harbor. I want to move back as soon as my son graduates college in the next year. We thought my Husband had to move to Olympia for his job, but they say not yet. The houses in historic Olympia are beautiful. They remind me of the historic area of Tampa I live in now. You not only are gonna be my Paleo buddy, but my moving buddy...LoL. Now I just have to get you to Crossfit and raise chickens. :)

I applaud everyone trying to find the type of food that makes them feel their best. Both physically and ecologically. Some of us will swear by watermelon and others of us will maintain that it is green tea that will keep up at our best. So, let's hear everyone's ideas, but keep in mind that you don't want to tread on anyone's idea of what is best for them.
For me, lots of veggies, fiber (bran and steel cut oats) and lean protein. Oh, and I love my Healthy Choice Fudge Bars. They have fiber in them so I have a reason to eat them!! Like I need one. I don't do very well if I eat bread or anything flour-laden. Trying to keep up with my water intake. Only one soda and one cup of coffee a day. Always chocolate, though. I mean dh sells tons and tons of it a year (literally) so that is a given.

If you can't find local beef locally (huh? that doesn't sound right) have you checked out localharvest.org? They have geographical search that might help you find something. Of course, not everyone advertises there, so don't be discouraged if tehy dont' show anything near you.

I have found local beef farmer. Grass fed, no antibiotics, no hormones. They are willing to sell me enough beef to fill my freezer. It is a very local farmer. I could almost walk to the farm and pick out my own hamburger on the hoof!! I think my husband may be willing to let me buy half a cow around October. I just have to find out how I would get that half. I mean, will it be cut, wrapped and labeled? Or will I be picking up an actual half a cow hanging from a great big hook? Did I mention that we are very much meat eaters? That's not going to change, but I'm trying to limit the portion size and trying to fill it out with more veggies.
We are eating way better. Even if hubby & daughter don't know it. I still have to sneak the veggies and beans into whatever I'm fixing. It's taking me about an hour to make dinner every night, but I'm also doing other things at the same time. I mean, the ability to make dinner in under half an hour may be great, but I don't mind taking a little more time for my family.
Even the dogs are eating better. I simmer all the leftover chicken bones (after I trim all the meat off first-raw), broccoli stems, carrots, peas, potatoes, rice....really just about all my leftovers at the end of the week go into the stock pot and I cook it all down, toss the bones & put the rest into the blender. We still get them dry dog food to mix with this home-made soft food. We usually get Rachel Ray's dog food. I like the ingredients & the dogs love it.
My daughter refuses to get on the scales, but says her pants are slipping down just a bit.
Keep up all your good works, sisters. Whatever your choices are, keep doing you best to get health!! We only get one body. Let's try to make it a healthy body.
Hugs and Squishies!!

We have great sources for local beef in our area. Our family does not eat a lot of beef - mainly wild-caught salmon, steelhead, tuna and bass. It would be nice to have a side of grass-fed, organic beef in our freezer...but then would mean the purchase of another freezer! We do have chickens (and no, I cannot eat them...they are "my girls"!).
Lorie, I LOVE Olympia and all the great opportunities it has to offer! My daughter just came home last night from being in Florida for 5 weeks - she said it was "HOT"! We are having high temps here this weekend (I love the heat - but not the humidity). Today is supposed to be about 88 - whoo hoo! Time to give my gardens and lawn a drink!!
I do work out A LOT and really want to drop those last 5 pounds. I run 3 days a week and swim at our athletic club a couple days a week. We are a pretty active family - bike riding, hiking (and yes the ocean fishing, can be hard work, too!!). It's the processed food junk that I need to cut (for me and my family)as I know we will all feel better. Lorie - I need your number on 1-800-Don't-buy-the crap as I just went grocery shopping and am trying to figure out that junk cereal literally jumped in my cart! oh boy...I still have work to do when it comes to grocery shopping! Stay in touch, Lorie! I would love to meet you when you move here!!

Well, Lorie, It sounds like you are off to a great start. I would probably be hospitalized if I completed that list. I think you might be a bit advanced for me! But, it sure is great to hear how well you are keeping to your goal.
We are a bit cooler today, so it should be nice outside this evening. I didn't get out early this morning because I wanted to do some baking before the heat of the day. But, it is cool where my Pilates reformer is, so no excuses there!

Hi Marianne ! We have no air where I workout so it is hard to get motivated some days. I've tried Pilates a couple of times and really liked it. It is a great companion to Crossfit. Keep up the great work!
Lesley, I'm so glad we are Paleo buddies! It's really not that hard if you plan ahead. A couple of years ago I broke my leg and was 40 lbs overweight and after being in the military was just embarrassed that I let myself go. I was in terrible shape but joined Crossfit again. I couldn't even jump a rope without gasping for air...lol. It's scale able to all fitness levels, so I walked when I couldn't run and jumped on a 4" box when I couldn't do anymore. Every week I was surprised at how much more I could do. I added the Paleo diet and really dropped the weight without measuring any food at all. I now can jump rope where when I jump the rope goes around twice before the next jump, Deadlift 240 lbs, and clean and jerk 120 lbs. I am afraid of my workouts as you never know what it it till you get there dragging tires ladt week) and I hate every minute of my normally 20-30 minute workouts, but find it works for me. I'm addicted to Crossfit...lol. Do what you can and don't give up. We have to get ready for the holidays!

Oh girls, I need to get back on the logging of food and exercise. We went on vacation and I used it as an excuse to just stop. I am trying to get back into the swing. I just realized that my gym, Anytime Fitness, has a web site where I can log both food and exercise. It also has short videos to show the correct way to use some of the machines. I was already logging on the government's SuperTracker page.
I also signed up for my companies "Get healthy" campaign as a team captain, and I've got to log there too. I'll be so busy logging I won't have time to eat!

Oooh! How nice to encourage each other. I've had to change my diet over the last two years with doctor's orders. Adrenal fatigue. I did drop 8 pounds almost right away and kept it off. I don't eat fruit often because I do not crave it. I think that I get most of what I need fiber wise from veggies instead. I also need help during the holidays. I keep saying, "I don't eat like this all the time. I only get offered this occasionally, so I'll have a little." I do only have a little, but I have it several times a day or week, then have to really watch it.

Well, I am so far off the wagon when it comes to exercise it isn't funny. We have had company for a few weeks and the end is in sight after Labor Day. Dh goes back to traveling almost weekly and I will be faithful with my Pilates again. At least that is the plan!
Am I the only one having trouble these final days of summer? Marianne |

Kristina, I'm with you. I am two weeks back onto my "normal" exercise routine. But, I have felt it! It would be very difficult to have the energy/time/willpower to hit the gym with a schedule like you and dh's. Reward yourself for your babysteps because you really have a lot on your plate. Maybe remind yourself to shuffle things around to get "YOU" at the top of the to-do list. You have done this before, you know you can do it again.
Thanks for posting and getting me back on track, too. Marianne |

Okay, I am so off track. i could not find this thread for a long time but I gound it today and I have read back and now it is time to get things in check and get moving again. I have just let life get in the way and been busy canning and not letting things go bad in the field.
******So lets go everyone and get things back on track and get to feeling better both mentally and physically.*****
I had baked oatmeal for breakfast and that will hold me till dinner. Dinner is mexican pinto beans with peppers and onions and a bit of cheese.

Marianne.........thanks for the words of encouragement. That is exactly what I am trying to do. Things were going so well for so long and now I am playing a mental game with myself. And the mental game is the hardest part of this changing my lifestyle.
But today was good and I accomplished alot so I am happy with the day!

I need to start checking in here. I was on a program last year, and was on track to lose 50 pounds. I was 24 pounds down and in May we were involved in a terrible auto accident. I have gained back ten pounds, and now the doc has given me the go-ahead to get back on my treadmill. I am down two pounds in the last week, so hopefully I am back on track.
