Family Matters:  first day of school  |

Today our 7.5 yr old son and our 5.5 yr old daughter went to school for the very first time.
We had done the homeschooling thing until my wonderful husband decided to enroll our children in our church's private Classical Christian school. (Huge chunk of change!)
Anyway, I have mixed feelings because I am very happy that they are going and I'm scared to death of my daughter having one of her classic meltdowns at school. It's normal at home for her to do this and I know how to deal with her, but to do it at school, they might come get her with the white lab coats. 
From what I have heard her kindergarten teacher is totally awesome. So, we'll see if she is able to deal with our little angel/devil child.
Our son thrives in school type environments. I know that he will be fine. Thank goodness. If I had to worry about 2 at once I'd be a gonner.

I hope they (and You) have a good day today. Maybe your daughter will be a little more in control outside of her normal setting, especially if she is enjoying the camaraderie of new friends and a kindly (and awesome) kindergarden teacher. Homeschooling is great, but it is also important for kids to polish their socialization skills and find their place in this big ole' world. Are you ready with a special afterschool treat to celebrate their first day?
Sometimes I think it is harder on the mom's when their kids go off to school...such a BIG step. Congrats to you for letting your kids experience this.

She cried this morning and didn't want to go, but it was a pretty meek protest.
Well.....the day went well until about lunchtime and then she squabbled with another student (also our neighbor). Then she fretted about her naptime mat because it wasn't comfy. She refused to lie down. Also she was not cooperative for her teacher about sitting in a certain spot. I think that she was testing the teacher, also she has had mass chaos for the last 9 months or so, what with us moving, me pregnant/having a baby, my dad going into a nursing home (with several hospitalizations before that), then my mom's health rapid decline and hospitilization, and then we moved and then she started school. Oh, and she stopped napping during the day.
Can we say stress????
We got her a different naptime mat. Maybe tomorrow will be better. She cried this afternoon, but she was so tired. Got her home, put in her in my bathtub and let her do the jets for awhile. She finally unwound and was happy all evening. She said that she really enjoyed the art and then she reiterated her art lesson. When I tucked her in she was wanting to go back tomorrow. At least she bounced back.

Rebecca- Your children are beautiful!! And don't worry- every day that passes will get easier for your daughter. Children have a way of finding their niche pretty quick. I hope today is a better day for her, and you!!

 Whew! Got up this morning and had to sweet-talk Caitlyn into getting ready. She was still saying she didn't want to go. I reminded her that she liked her art lesson. I also had some mints ready for the car trip to school. And finally she got out the door. I did a happy dance with my 2 year old!
When they got to school she wanted her daddy to walk to the classroom with her. She showed him around and then she hugged and kissed him goodbye. She wasn't clingy or anything.
I sure hope she has a good day today.

Oh... that's too bad. I'm sorry. Maybe she will find someone else to encourage her. How old is she? I had that happen to me a few times too. I was the quiet, reserved child. I think that having more outgoing friends was so helpful to me. Especially in college. I really came out of my shell there. I am still not highly extroverted, but I am comfortable for the most part. Are there any kinds of activities she could join with more kids so she could find a new best bud? Hope that it works out.
