 Ok yesterday my hubby used the last of the propane in our tank that does our kitchen stove & hot water...not a problem if you know what to do...well neigher of us thought to shut the knob off on the stove so today I woke up with a bleeding nose & a killer headache...theres not enough left to light the stove but the fumes are going thur out the house & am so happy the in house crippled chickens didn't die or me for that matter....thank goodness they added something to it so it smells really bad or I would be in big trouble I think....have the doors open & fans going to get rid of any that is still in the house....
I had laid down in the livingroom recliner to take a nap & woke up 8 hours later feeling very odd & just knew it had to be that cuase I could smell it all the way in the livingroom which is one floor up from the kitchen.
When I called them to come refill it they never mentioned I should shut off the knobs to the stove & hot water heater since it will be tuesday before they can get out here......So I guess I am one lucky old hen that I didn't have dead chickens or worst...my hubby coming home & finding me gone as well....
so for all of you hens who deal with propane, if it ever runs out make sure to turn off the knobs to the things it works with or you could end up like me or worst...Michele'

OH! Michelle! I'm so glad you're okay! You poor thing! You know, maybe you should call the doctor on call overnight, just to be safe. That sounds pretty dangerous for your health. Please be careful, okay? Hugs - Nini

| Thank God you lived through that, Michele! What a horrible wake-up call. You might want to get a carbon monoxide detector if you use propane. The local fire department folks can tell you where it would be best to put it in your particular house. |

Michelle, I just read your post to my husband and he knodded and said, "And what makes it worse is that it soaks into the foundation because it is heavier than air." He reminded me of a friend of ours whose mom had done what happened to you and the propane soaked into the foundation. After she thought she had it aired out, she went to light the pilot light and it blew the house completely off of the foundation and killed her. So, I think I'd have your gas delivery man check it out??

yeap I am really lucky that Monk my kitten decided to jump on me & head butt me until I got up...he normally does not do that so I kept sending him away but he wouldn't give up...such a good kitty he is.....they will do a leak test on tuesday when they refill the tank inside & outside the house just to be sure I am ok....but I wish they would have reminded me to shut everything off so it didn't come to this...I am better...house is aired out & will have doors/windows ect on tomorrow as well just to be extra sure.guess its time to go thur the house & replace all batteries in smoke.carb thingies....still have headache but nose no longer bleeding or not dizzy anymore so just thankful I woke up to the head butting of my kitty...Michele'

Batz are you sure you shouldn't see a dr? Good grief that's scary. There was an accident out here -a guy had 2 propane tanks in the back of his pick up truck & didn't shut the valve off- they wound up blowing up in a fast food drive thru-no joke & it was caught on camera. Made it on the evening news. The driver was trying to shut the valve off & static electricity just took over. Our house in NM is propane powered.
Mary Beth-would that be a slab foundation or a raised one?

Sherrie, it was a home with a basement and the propane soaked into the cinderblock.
And we heard about that guy and his truck on the news here!

wow between the house blowing up & a truck & drive thur I am totally freaked!!!!..as for a doctor believe it or not I am ok...today was a slow day for me but I am alright..I am more worried about my in house injured chickens but they are all doing very well.....none sick or acting weird...me I am just tired but I think moving furniture yesterday wore me out as well....but I do know I will be glad to see the company come & test just to be sure there is no problem...we did have a woodstove going today so I know the inside of the house is safe but want to make sure the outside is safe as well.....we had winds from the east come today so it wasn't bitter cold later on in the day & that too helped move the air out of the house & surrounding the outside....
I am sooo blessed to have all of you hens...I mainly wanted you all to know what could happen & here I get all this love back instead...makes this old hens heart warm to know I have such a good hen house behind me :)...Michele'

OMG! You are one lucky hen! Monk is most assuredly a hero! Our motor home uses propane and it has not only a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector but also a propane detector. The propane detector is on a wall just above the floor which would make sense as Mary Beth pointed out it's heavier than air so would settle to the ground. I don't believe a carbon monoxide detector will detect propane itself. My house uses propane too so I'm going to ask DH to get us a propane detector (we have the other two). Glad you and the critters are all OK.
DH just confirmed that a carbon monoxide detector WILL NOT detect a propane leak. We all need to go get a propane detector.

You can put some liquid dish soap in a squirt bottle thinned with some water and check your gas fittings yourself. If you have a leak, the propane will make the soap solution "blow bubbles". Anyone with propane or city gas should have a bottle on hand for emergencies. If you have a loose fitting and are not "handy", call a service tech to fix it.

Glad you are safe and ok. Reminds of of a picture that my grandparents had. It was a cartoon of an old man in his night shirt blowing out a propane lamp. This was before the sulfur smell was added to the propane to warn of leaks. The caption below it read "The blow that killed grandpa".

update..today they came out & did a check for leaks...we are safe..no leaks :)...so glad to hear that...but am going to get a propane detector just to be on the safe side form now on....Michele'
