My daughter is planning to move from Washington to Pensacola, Florida for school this September. This is our (my daugher and I) first attempt at a cross-country road trip and would love your suggestions/ideas on must-see places, eateries, and hotels. Our preliminary itinerary is to drive to Montana, down to Sioux Falls, SD, to Kansas City, through Mississippi to Pensacola.
We want to do this trip as inexpensively (with the price of gas...what am I thinking???) as possible, but due to time constraints most likely will stay in hotels (maybe camp a night or two depending on location), but plan to make our meals and/or find inexpensive places to eat. We welcome any suggestions on what to take too!
I want us to be safe and will have her car fully-serviced before we leave. We have AAA membership and have our emergency road-side kits. Are there other ideas that we can take to ensure a safe and FUN trip?
As hard as it will be leave my daughter in Florida...I am excited to do this trip with her!

I hope she stops in Louisiana to eat! There is a place in Breaux Bridge called Cafe Des Amis. Good cajun food.
Louisiana has the old historic mansions on River Road in Baton Rouge. There are several to see, but Nottaway Plantation should be the first to see. So beautiful!
I hope she has a safe and great trip. Keep us posted.

Hi Sebrena! Wow, what a great road-trip. I've made that same trip twice from Gig Harbor with my then 8-year old son. I guess it depends on which way you plan on coming across the states. If your trip stops in California, see monterey bay, Cannary row, the Aquarium (it's awesome!). Stop at the Grand Canyon definitely. Stop in New Orleans to see the garden district, bourbon street (Just to say you did), cafe Dumonde, Royale Street with all the shops. Let me know when you're in Florida!!

We've driven across country twice once on the southern route once on the northern lots to see if you like the Natiional Parks and you can buy a pass that gets you into all of them at a discount. We always try to eat at Cracker Barrel as the food is good and resonably priced and there is ususally a good motel close by. Yellowstone, and Mount Rushmore are amazing as is the Grand Canyon, we also enjoyed seeing Graceland in Memphis.

I have driven out to Mt. Rushmore and back with just my youngest son when he was 15. It was a great trip. Went I90 and then out to Yellowstone. Went out the East entrance of Yellowstone, through the Bighorn Mountains with a side trip to Little bighorn memorial, then down through Cody Wyoming out to Devils tower and then out to Mt. Rushmore. I took an electric kettle with me so that in the mornings we could have oatmeal and tea for breakfast. I brought lunch sandwich fixings in the car with me for stops at rest areas to try and keep food costs down and then had a good Restaurant meal wherever we stopped for the night. It worked out pretty well since I couldn't always plan what each town we went through would have available for food. The great thing was that if we saw a place in a town that looked like the "happening" place we could stop instead of making lunch ourselves. The other option is to go down through Wyoming and visit Fort Laramie. They had some interesting information on the Oregon Trail with some re-enactment ladies demonstrating what it was like to live on the trail and on the homesteads in the area.

I agree that Mt. Rushmore is worth the stop. And it is free to view. A bit out of the way, but frankly South Dakota is a bit out of the way, so really you are THERE.

Thank you ladies! I love suggestion for taking an electric kettle for oatmeal in the mornings (our favorite breakfast!). I would love to stop at Mt. Rushmore and if we are so close, I think it is a must see. I love cajun and do hope to try some on our cruise the LA.
I think we might drive the I90 and head midwest and then down. I would love for our whole family to go and see some of these places, however school starts for my younger boys and my hubby has a hard time getting away from the office in Sept. (plus it will be great time with my girl!). Lorie - I will give you a jingle! ;0) Thank you all for your ideas...you are all so helpful!
