What herbs are good to reduce high blood pressure? I dont want to start a perscription if I can help it. I hear once they start you on the med you cant get off of it. I would prefer a natural alternative if anyone knows of any. Thanks |

First look at your diet and stress, make changes there where needed. Herbs can help but will only do so much if you don't make additional changes as necessary. One of my favorites is hawthorn berries--they work wonders for the cardiovascular system. Flax seed and omega 3 oils can help also. Learn some relaxation techniques--meditation is awesome.

I read in Mother Earth News about Hibiscus Tea helping to lower blood pressure. Mine is fine, but it's good to know!

I don't have high blood pressure, my is usually low 90/60 or so but I have a book called Food Remedies and looked up high blood pressure for a friend a few years ago and celery can help. Here's a little something about it http://www.highbloodpressureinfo.org/benefit-of-celery.html

Earl Mindell's New Herb Bible lists celery; dandelion; hawthorne and garlic for lowering BP. Mindell has a note of personal advice: "I take a heart-health combination capsule of hawthorne and garlic extract, mixed tocopherol, cayenne, and Co Q10 twice daily. The capsule contains a touch of parsley seed oil to eliminate the garlic odor."
My mother and husband take the Kyolic form of garlic, which has no odor and it does come in a cardiac formula. Also, if you have a good health food store in your area with knowledgeable staff, I suggest you check with them. Standard Process brands are whole foods (not herbs) that are formulated for different ailments. Haven't tried them for myself, but have used several different ones for my dog. Our holistic vet highly recommends them. If your health food store doesn't carry them, you can go to their website and check on the human formulas. Good luck, and don't eat licorce, which does increase the BP. I think it's nasty stuff, but some people love it.

I have a friend who has been battling high blood pressure, although she is otherwise healthy. Her nutritionist recommended apples. She has been eating an apple a day, and her blood pressure is coming down.
This may not work for everybody, but if you don't want to do the prescription thing, try eating apples.
