I've just dug them out of the ditches and they transplanted fine in the spring time! Might be a better bet if they grow in your area, just make sure to get permission first....I got caught once. Teehee! Oops.

"Come to the cliff, " He said. "We are afraid," they said. "Come to the cliff," He said. They came. He pushed them. And they flew.

We have elderberry here on the coast, but they are the red type. They are beautiful all spring until harvest and then the leaves are beautiful. They are good for jams and the Indians used to use them in pemectin (think I spelled that wrong). They really don't transplant well from my experience. We have a lot of them on our acre and have tried to give my sis some several times with no luck. Hugs..Mary

Where in Ky do you live? I live in southern OH and I always pick mine from tne moist areas like ditches, although they ae dissappearing because of the state's mowing the roadsides. I have some in my creek which came up from the seeds I dumped ther, but the birds always get them before they get ripe. I make a really good cough syrup from the juice and they make the best jelly.

I was going to suggest a catalog, but yeah...they only ship in the spring. I'm also thinking about planting elderberries. I think I've seen them growing in a state park here in WNY, but I guess they would frown on people digging them up.

Yeah ... I guess ... and here in KY. there are no SAFE ditches ... the roads run right up to the property lines here ... I'm sure there are some somewhere.
I want them for dyeing my wool and jams, wine and so on ...

Teri,

I wonder if you could use dried elderberries? Mountain Rose Herbs sells them. I have used them for making Elderberry Syrup. Just an idea :)
