april fools day was no joke and it's a day i shall never forget. both of my kids were in different hospitals on the same day!

my younger son andrew (18,) had his tonsils out yesterday morning. my older son joe (24), wound up in 2 different hospitals yesterday afternoon.

joe is the type of person that doesnt complain much, and will go to work even if he's not feeling well. my older son joe came home yesterday, barely able to walk straight, asking me to take him to the hospital! we saw a physicians assistant. i told her i wanted a cat scan done...she said he didn't need one. i got so annoyed. then she came back and i suppose after consulting with the dr decided we were doing a cat scan. after the cat scan they said they saw a cyst in his brain on his thalamus... and said they were transferring joe to another hospital an hr away, for an mri and to see a neurosurgeon. what an ordeal.

My son hadnt eaten all weekend..was dizzy...has lost about 20lbs in a month, and cant walk well.

The first hospital said he had fluid in his ears but they didn’t give him an antibiotic. They think maybe a virus that’s causing his constant puking and dizziness? The 1st hospital said he was not dehydrated, the 2nd hospital said he was. I was so annoyed. A nurse at the 1st hospital said she was concerned over his weight loss. A nurse at the 2nd hospital said most cysts are cancer! that threw me into a panic and i had a melt down at the hospital. Given all his symptoms and the words of the medical staff, I was sure they were going to tell me my son was terminal! I was losing it.

after spending hrs in this 2nd hospital, my son was finally seen and an mri done. I brought him home early yesterday morning. They say there's a lesion on his brain but that it’s not causing his issues…? They did a lot of blood work and everything was ok. I was in a state of shock when they said he was going to be ok!!

i cannot believe the emotions i've experienced in the past 12 hrs. as of last night, joe is still dehydrated and weak. He is still feeling dizzy. I was able to call his doctor last night and speak to him. My son has an appt with him later today. My son has always been healthy and I’m concerned over this chronic sickness he’s had for months. I’m hoping our doctor will be able to make my son feel better. I still have to wonder why he has a lesion though.

Btw- My son got a concussion at work about 2 months ago, and we initially thought maybe he was having the blurry vision because of that. After forcing the physicians assistant to do the cat scan, is when we discovered something was in his brain, instead of effects from a concussion. now we worried that maybe he had cancer. The doctors didn’t think his symptoms were from a concussion. this has been the most horrible scare of my life!

I’m hoping my joey will feel better fast.

Hugs Connie I will send up a prayer for him and your whole family. One of my daughters has hydrocephalus and the symptoms your son is having sound very similar. Our brain fluid drains down into our spinal column and when there is a blockage of any kind it sort of acts like a clogged sink. My daughter has a shunt that removes the fluid another way. In my daughters case a brain hemorrhage and scar tissue is the cause but a tumor or cyst could do the same thing. It might be a good idea if you ask the Dr. if this could be happening with your son. When my daughters shunt isn't working properly she gets very similar symptoms stumbling dizziness headaches and crankiness and vomiting. The symptoms can be subtle at first. Also when she first starts to get sick which has been a long time ago now, she feels better in the morning and then feels worse as the day goes on. Most doctors don't know much about hydrocephalus also called water on the brain. I would suggest you take him to a pediatric neurosurgeon or at least a pediatric neurologist. Really, regular Drs don't know much about things like this. But a neurosurgeon would spot it right away. It is an illnes that can be managed or cured too.

joey went to dr buono(our primary) yesterday and he says he has an inner ear infection, and is on now on medicine for it. according to the 2 neurologists at stonybrook (2nd hospital) the mri, shows nothing in the brain....? but the cat scan from elih(1st hospital) showed a cyst...? i cant believe this crap. you dont know who to believe anymore.

he's still dizzy but hopefully with the med from dr buono he'll be better real soon. i'm thankful he appears to have nothing serious...but when a hospital is telling you your son has something on his brain and is being transferred to another hospital....it's enough to scare the crap out of you. when we were at stonybrook a nurse said "most of the time these cysts are malignant"....i almost had a heart attack! HOW could she say that? and elih said he had fluid in the ears, then why didnt THEY give him meds? there is something seriously wrong with our medical system! stonybrookis saying elih is wrong. makes a parent feel SO at ease (sarcasm inserted here). i think i'm going to bill elih for emotional distress!

thank you all for your words of support.

Oh my goodness, Connie! I feel so bad! That is pretty harrowing! I really pray your sons will BOTH be all right!

I had a similar experience last year with a technician and a nurse practitioner who both gave me extremely scary prognoses after having tests done. I was so upset, I asked for prayer from just about everyone I knew. When I actually saw my specialist, he was mortified and very angry that they would be so bold as to do that (not their job, apparently), because HE is the professional who knows best and the only one who should diagnose and treat. Long story short, he didn't think any test results were nearly as significant as the others did. I didn't know what to think at that point, and felt very silly having upset everyone I knew about it. When that kind of thing happens, it leaves you feeling a bit stunned and uncertain while the medical personnel simply go merrily on with their lives. So, I totally hear you. Not fun.

Having said that, though - did your son's PCP say that an inner ear infection would cause such dramatic weight loss? I have experience with inoperable brain lesions, and they can be a result of brain trauma, but also indicators of serious health conditions. Like you, I am so glad that this doesn't seem to be anything serious; but if your son's health doesn't improve, please trust your intuition and have his brain scans investigated a little further, okay? Don't doubt your instincts with this - it's always better safe than sorry. :)

Hugs,

Nini

Nini i agree. the messed up thing...when i initially left the first hospital to get ready for the 1 hour ride to the second hospital, my sons girlfriend had stayed behind for a few minutes with my son before she was going to meet up with me at my house before heading to the 2nd hospital. they told her to "prepare herself".....! the both of us were SO upset. of course i want to know what that first hospital 'saw' on the cat scan to say he had a cyst. then someone else said it was a lesion. now there saying they saw nothing? this raises too many questions of the competency of all involved. and it makes me angry that we were led to believe my son was perhaps terminal!! i dont wish this experience on anyone. simply awful and someone should be held accountable.

i dont know what the doc said about the weight loss. hopefully with the fact the had a virus a couple of times, and the nausea from the dizziness that that is what caused it. i plan on keeping my eye on him.

I am so sorry you're both going thru this-I know I was on a roller coaster with my mom during the last year or so of her life. Prayers are with you both, and as hard as it is to do,be sure to nurture yourself because caregivers frequently burn themselves out emotionally as well as physically. Read positive and inspiring books such by authors like Louise Hay and Wayne Dyer. You need care too,and inspiration.

If you don't get real answers you need to check it out with different doctors. Sometimes "serious" worries are easily discounted by someone with a different perspective. Dizziness and rapid weight loss are signals to get things checked out.
Prayers are with you and your family. I'm hoping Andrew is recovering well and that Joe's situation is figured out and fixed soon.

Oh Connie, it's so awful when our loved ones become so ill and the doctors are all over the place and don't have a clue, it seems. I was wondering if you could get a more professional opinion from a private neurologist? I don't want to frighten you but my nephew Eric had a few of the same symptoms and it was discovered after much the same run around that he had developed MS. He's on medication and has no problems now, is a daddy and a professional pilot. I hope that poor Joe gets some relief, I hate being dizzy, it's awful =(

From my experience there were many times that we were told all sorts of things that were happening to our daughter. Then after prayer the tests would show different, leaving the Drs to scratch their heads. See all the people praying for you and your son above? That is why the later tests showed there was nothing. He was healed by prayer. Walk in confidence and rejoicing.
