I just got back from vacation in South Haven MI (the self-proclaimed blueberry capital of the world) where we picked 30 pounds of blueberries. I am planning on making blueberry wine and jam, but maybe something else too. Any ideas??

Good idea Alice thank you! That should have been a no-brainer but I don't make pies. I'll give it a try though. My husband loves pie. I just found a recipe :)

Blueberries can and freeze really really well. Maryjane mentioned, and I agree, that a wonderful healthy treat is a bowl of blueberries with milk poured over. The milk coats each berry like instant ice cream. No sugar needed.

Inside me there is a skinny girl crying to get out, but I can usually shut her up with cookies.

I have made blueberry vinegar. Makes a cool drink when mixed with water. Mint or basil goes well in the drink.

Other ways to use blueberry vinegar: in sweet & sour sauces; sprinkled over fresh fruit; and 1 tsp. to brighten up baked blueberry desserts.

My 1998 Ball Blue Book, page 76, has recipes for Blueberry-Basil Vinegar and Blueberry Syrup. I have made the syrup too and very good over pancakes.

Blueberry and peach pie, sounds strange, but its SO SO good, blueberry ice cream is also really good...

Sorry girls. Michigan maybe the high bush blueberry capital of the world but Washington County Maine IS the low bush blueberry capital of the world. If you look in the crown jewels of our county, you'll see red for lobster on the right, green for logging and Christmas wreathes (think Whitney Wreathes, LL Bean Wreathes and QVC wreathes and Wreathes Across America made by Worcester Wreath)and high in the middle is the deep blue of delicious Maine Wild blueberries. My husband is a wild blueberry producer. He's small time compared to a lot of other outfits. Even though these are tended to by commercial means (yes, sadly spraying for fungus and maggots) these vines grow here in Maine naturally. In the fall, we burn off or mow fields to encourage new growth and better berries the following harvest year. blueberry fields in Maine are harvested every other year, so producers split their properties up so they have berries coming every year. So check our your grocery freezer section for frozen Maine Wilds. You'll never go back to high bush again. LOL.

Lorena - I don't doubt you're right, but South Haven holds a place in my heart like no other. Probably much like Washington County ME does for you it sounds like :) And it's only a 2 1/2 hour drive from my house. Easiest vacation ever!

Sara - I'll look into the syrup. That's a good idea. We eat a lot of pancakes here!

Tina - If I can get my hands on some local peaches I'll give that a try. I think I have a friend with a connection.

I use dried blue berries in my oatmeal cookies, and they are useable anywhere you would use raisins.
So dehydrate any berries you have left :)

Tracy - good idea! I forgot that I bought a dehydrator from a resale store. I'm not sure if or how it works but that would be a good way to test it out.

So far I've made 7 half pints of blueberry-lime jam, and 9 1/2 pints of regular blueberry jam. I was going to attempt the pie filling today, but I didn't have the right thickening agent. I ordered it on amazon, and it should be here tomorrow or the day after. Tomorrow I'm starting the wine. I always forget how much work canning takes with three small children!! I feel like it's literally all I've done with the past 2 days.

What a blessing Erin! I LOVE blueberries and wish that there were a U Pick here for berries.

I have a wonderful recipe for a Blueberry-Cinnamon Cake if you would like. It is my Mom's recipe and when my honey and I were selling our home several years ago I made it when people were checking it out. Our home sold that day :)

Tracy - it is nice to see the cans. They are very pretty. I just printed out some pretty labels for them today too.

Sharon - I would love to have that recipe. You can post it or email it to me please! :)

Bear5 - I didn't take any pics when we were making the wine on Friday. It would have been impossible, but it also would've been hilarious. I knew from making the wine last year that we needed a piece of cheesecloth. I had a piece, but it turned out to be too small to use for 10 lbs of blueberries. We were in the middle of squeezing them through the cheesecloth and it started ripping, so we had to abandon that plan for pantyhose. They were out of a box, but the box was opened. It has been so long since I've worn pantyhose that I didn't know if they were worn or not! They were clean though, and we boiled them anyway. So now I have 2 nylon legs full of blueberries hanging out in my primary fermenter. When we rack it to secondary, I'll try to remember to take a picture.

Hi Erin :)

Here is the recipe, I hope you like it :)


Blueberry-Cinnamon Cake

1/2-cup butter
1-cup sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2-teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
3 Tablespoons sugar mixed with 1-teaspoon cinnamon

Cream butter. Add 1-cup sugar and beat until light. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt and add alternately with milk, beating until smooth. Fold in berries. Pour into a greased 9x9x2-inch glass-baking dish. Sprinkle with sugar-cinnamon mixture. Bake in moderate oven about 375 degrees for about 40 minutes. Cut into squares and serve hot.
