What a fascinating story. Thank you Mary Jane for calling our attention to it. As I get older, I am more aware of a lot of things that are disappearing. I guess it is our job to see that that doesn't happen.

Thanks Bonnie!

3/23/2015 The birds and the … trinkets?

We’ve all heard that some birds, especially crows, are attracted to trinkets. But to hear that a murder of crows (no, not that kind of murder … murder is the term for a group of crows) recognize that trinkets can be a gift of gratitude to us humans … well, that’s a strange bird (or birds, as the case may be)!

The rest of the story is on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1Htoby0

What a delightful story. The crow is in many native American stories also.

3/25/2015 In this beautiful new book by photographer Francesco Mastalia, Organic: Farmers & Chefs of the Hudson Valley, you’ll find over 100 one-of-a-kind ambrotype portraits of the farmers and chefs of the Hudson Valley. Not only are the photos beautiful, but they are of some of the most influential members of the organic movement.

How did the photographer get the particular look for the pictures? I’ll tell you on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1BMjeIx

3/26/2015 (Meg) Have you been over to our Farmgirl Connection chatroom lately? It’s chock full of farmgirls sharing their expertise in all things farmgirl. Many of us spend a considerable amount of time every day chatting via our computers, so we’ve decided it’s good to put our electronics aside now and then. How? We’re mailing mail art. Real art mailed through the post office. Real art that shows up in our actual mailboxes.
On Raising Jane I’ve compiled samples of the awesome art our Mail Art Coordinator (and mail artist extraordinaire), Kristi, has been receiving … http://bit.ly/1OAZjGK

3/29/2015 For this week’s Each Other/Farmgirl Jubilee Beginning Level Merit Badge, I brewed myself a cuppa, baked a few current scones (with clotted cream, guv’nr), kept me eyes peeled for a sighting of the Tardis (my childhood dream of being Doctor Who’s new companion has never died), and read all about HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee of 2012 … http://bit.ly/1FZtvZw

3/30/2015 (Meg) In our busy world of travel and errands, there’s a universal question that we all must eventually face, especially if we’re the parent of little ones: Where’s the bathroom? Pulling over for a little “hike” in the woods is fine for many of us, but what if there are no woods nearby or your stop requires a little more, ahem, pampering?

Well, if your smartphone accompanies you on your jaunts, there’s an app for that! I’ll tell you all about it on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1GHeXgu

3/31/2015 Allspice … we know it helps give our pumpkin pies that delicious, unmistakable taste. I even used it in my Pumpkin Refrigerator Pickles. But what the heck is allspice, anyway? I’ll tell you on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1DmPckp

4/2/2015 (Meg) The girls and I took a trip to Boise, Idaho, last week. The weather was warm and lovely, and we spent ample time at the park. Although we could have just as well been at home on the farm because as I sat on the park bench, I watched dozens of children playing on Boise’s state-of-the-art playground equipment, but guess where my girls spent their time? http://bit.ly/1GPwm6H

4/8/2015 (MBA Jane) For this week’s Garden Gate/Rootin’ Tootin’ Beginner Level Merit Badge, I have to admit a deep, dark secret.

I’ve never told anyone this. But if there’s ever a safe environment for the soul cleansing act of confession, the Farmgirl Sisterhood is it, right?

Okay. Here I go … I’m not entirely certain what a root vegetable is: http://bit.ly/1O9zJYc

4/11/2015 Here’s a fact every lit-loving farmgirl should know: In her day, Emily Dickinson was better known for crafting flower gardens than poems.

She looks so prim sitting there, doesn’t she? But there’s just a little something in her almost-smile and steadfast gaze that suggest a wilder side to “Daisy,” as she was nicknamed. Little would the casual viewer realize that the dainty bouquet she holds is a symbol of scarcely restrained affection … for her garden … http://bit.ly/1FxikYd

4/13/2015 (MBA Jane) For this week’s Outpost/Speak for the Trees Beginner Level Merit Badge, I got a perfectly perfect excuse to visit my bestie at the Bureau of Land Management. Sometimes, she forgets we’re besties, but I always remind her with a peppy hello (and a latte).

Being BFFs with a nature and wildlife guru is way cool, girls. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and I totally encourage you to take a latte over to your local BLM and test my theory. Sadly, Debbie was in a fish-naming meeting (very important, very hush-hush), so I left her coffee on her desk and took what I came for: a handy-dandy pamphlet on local trees … http://bit.ly/1PDvExa
