I guess this is more of a "share" than asking for advice; though by all means, if you have suggestions, please do!
I have five hens (no roos) here on our mini-farm in training. They are all just over a year old now. Our Easter Egger, Trixie, has become broody. I tried multiple times to "break" her of it, to no avail. Poor thing, didn't even have any eggs to sit on! A very nice farm friend of mine gave me a dozen, more than likely, fertilized eggs to stick under her. Like a good mama hen, she tucked them right up underneath her. Hooray! Then I woke the next morning to the eggpocolypse!!  All but two of the eggs were not only pushed out of the nest, but smashed besides! What a mess! We are hopeful for those last two. I'm going to try candling them at the end of the week.
Anyone else have broody hen stories? I'd love to read em'! |

Broody hens can be difficult to 'break'. It sounds like you gave a good try of giving her some eggs to set. I hope the other two eggs hatch. That would be a good outcome.
'Snow White' was always our broody one. We had ducks that were not good setters and would abandon nests. We often gave the duck eggs to Snow White and throughout her lifetime she hatched out about 15 ducklings. It was so cute to see little duck beaks peaking out from beneath her.

Broody hens are so funny. We've had some who are nice and some who are lil devils. Our favorite broody hen story here is when we had two hens who just HAD to sit in the same box on ONE egg, ended up hatching out the ONE egg together and then mothered the chick together. We have a couple broody hens (out of 30 or so) here but I just let them do their own thing. :) I hope your last two eggs hatch out!
