I am planning to start with the new shampoo routine and trying to switch out our cosmetics/facial stuff as well as we run out.

ps-- glad to hear the tips on long hair as dd#2 has hair down to her hiney and ours is all very thick.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

| I read this topic and have been doing the BS and ACV for about 3 weeks. I love it! I had a friend comment on it sounding cumbersome, but I just keep two Tupperware type cups in the shower. On the way in I scoop about 2 tsp of BS in one and about 1 Tbsp of ACV in the other. The ACV one stacks on top until I'm ready to wash my hair. I add 1-2 cups of wtr to the BS, and just pour it over and rub it in. It sits while I grab the ACV cup and add wtr to it. I'm only doing this 2-3 x's a wk, but overall I am very happy with the results. Thank you Tasha for the topic! |

Yes, the smell does go away.
My Step Father had soriesis (sp)of the scalp, and uses the ACV. Has not had any problems in probably 15 years.
Both my kids are in high school, and every year, I would get anxious when school started, as the lice would soon be through the schools. I would rinse their hair with ACV and leave it overnight. The next morning, I could not smell it, and neither one of them have ever had lice.
Just thought I would add the other use for those with children in school.

OK, I'm pretty sold on this thing!
This is why...
I usually lose an fairly good amount of hair each time I shampoo. After the first time I used no poo, I noticed there was hardly any hair in the drain.
Well, I immediately relapsed and went back to shampoo...the amount of hair in the drain started to increase. I went back to no-poo and this is the second time in a row that I have done it...very few hairs. I think I am losing as few hairs as I did while I was pregnant!
This last time I used the BS and ACV and then put a tiny bit of my old conditioner on my hair and left it in. It has cut back on the frizzies a ton.
Now I have to decide if I continue dying my hair or not....

Faith, consider henna! :) (I guess that's only if you want a reddish tone....)
I found that I didn't lose as many hairs with the washing, but when I comb out my hair, THAT'S when they all come out! But I'm not too worried about it, I have long hair, which makes it look worse than it is. |

| I made the no-poo balls, and they work for me. They are handy to have by the shower,but do break up easy, so I have to handle them carefully. I have been rinsing with the acv. Michele |

It took me several visits to read through this thread, but this has been one of the most interesting discussions I've ever read!! Ladies, all of you who posted, thank you so much for taking the time to talk about this. I've read through the link provided, too, and I'm going to give this a go. I doubt I can talk dd into it -- she's the typical teenager with hair care products galore -- but I'll do it without any fanfare and when she notices (which she will), I'll tell her what I've been doing. THat will work much better with her than a frontal attack!

Patti- I'm taking the same approach with my daughter. She has more hair care products than WalMart! But, the other day she commented on how shiny my hair was, and that it looked really soft. So, I told her what I've been doing. Will she try it? Maybe. Weaning yourself off of every product known to man is a bit difficult, but when she moves out on her own this summer, she may look at it for the cost effectiveness! You never know! :)

I used henna (yes, I dye my hair red) but I stopped because it took so long to rinse it out...I will look around here for a store that sells it, but we're a small town, so I probably won't find it. I wish they made henna as easy to use as the bottles of color.
I did get the perfect color from it...once...
I always mixed up the color myself (the store had it in many colors in bulk) and I had mixed up something, then used beet juice with the water. It was gorgeous, but I never could get the same color again.
I'm planning a trip back to OR, I should put that on the list of things to buy there.

I just ran across this thread yesterday and tried the baking soda and vinegar this morning. My hair is drying right now but it feels clean and was fairly easy to comb.
DOes anyone know what helps with frizzy hair? My hair is wavy/somewhat curly and it gets very frizzy and nothing helps. I also have what I call "helmet head". My hair is straight at the top and then lower down my head it starts to get the waves...so it looks like I've been wearing a helmet or hat and flattened out the top part of my hair. Any tips for helping with that? |

Oh, Elizabeth!! I wish I knew! I will be watching this thread for a response to your question. I have such frizz from the curls and overprocessing thru the years. I have tried this a cpl of times and whimp back to my store of hair stuff. I did notice the stop in the loss of hair...which I loved. But I cant find anything to stop this horrible frizz. I've tried using olive oil but you can feel it...not just oil, but like a flim or something. I really want to try this successfully. Just gotta find a way to stop the poof.

Elizabeth, on one of the sites listed in the very first post, there are listed "problems" (dandruf, frizz, etc.) and solutions. I can't remember which of the 2 it was, though -- sorry.
Well, I did it this morning and I thought I'd miss the suds, but I didn't at all. I did the same thing Daile (sp) does and that worked great -- not inconvenient at all. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens as I continue to use this instead of shampoo & conditioner. I'm figuring my hair will improve over time, as the effects of shampoo use are repaired.

Did you ever find out if it strips the color? I would love to try it, but I do get highlights in my hair every couple of months (I know, the chemicals are not so good, but this is one area I can't give up yet).

Can you make up a bottle of the baking soda and water -- say a few days worth -- and just use a bit of it daily (after shaking to remix it)? Or will the baking soda settle too badly?

I just washed my hair the Poo-free way a little while ago!! It feels so great. I was also a skeptic about this because my hair is long, thick and coarse, so I thought it would not come out nicely. We almost always have humidity here on Long Island, so I wrestle this with conditioners, etc. So far, my hair feels cleaner than ever and it is soft where I blow dried it in the front. Another group of chemicals out of my life!!

Great thread everyone. I have read the whole thing and have been poo-free for a little over a week now. I love it although I am still getting used to it. I have dry, curly hair that falls out by the handfull in the shower. It isn't so bad now. Although I have been doing the BS and ACV about every three days and just water in between. I do comb through my hair before washing it now to distribute the oil. After a few days it seems to get oily near the scalp, but my ends are still very dry and frizzy! I hope it will eventually balance out. My ends do need a trim so I know that will help a lot. It is so much easier to do than shampooing/conditioning, which I was doing about every other day. I do/did color my grey, but I am not sure if I will continue to do so. I have some henna, but haven't tried it because it seems like such a long process. Anyway, this is so awesome and I have the whole family aboard (I think) now on to getting the rest of the chemicals out of the house. I am looking into BS for laundry now.

I wanted to let you girls know that the white vinegar mix works great for dandruff. Hubby has had dandruff for as long as I have known him and nothing we have tried has ever compleatly cleared it up. About two weeks ago, I had him rinse with the diluted white vinegar and for the first time I can remember his scalp is clear of red dry spots. A note of caution though...he says it burns like crazy.

By the way I love you signature! Nice to see you here! I have lived in Loveland forever. I was born in Longmont and moved to Loveland when I was 7 and have been here since (I am now 33), except for a year in Ft. Collins. Loveland is OK; it is growing too much, just as everywhere is, I am sure. Where are you at now? How long did you live in Loveland?

I would love to get away from shampoos. However, I color may hair as I'm just not ready to be grey (even though I have grandchildren). Have any of you tried this on color treated hair? Also, does anyone use a Fuller brush? Lehman's sells them and I've heard that they are wonderful for evenly distributing the natural oils in your hair all the way to the ends; reducing the need to wash your hair so often.

I've been washing with baking soda for about a week now. I love it! I have color-treated hair and I haven't noticed a difference. I'm not sure how long it takes before I can expect to. I'm actually hoping it strips my hair because I want my natural color back, grey and all!  I have more grey than my mom- and I'm only 27! (By the way- the Bible says silver hair is a crown of glory! I'm clinging to that!) |

Just tried this today and WOW...awesome!! I have bottom legnth hair and after shampoo and conditioner I still have to use some sort of serum to get the tangles out. I didn't have to do that today! The tangles came right out. I think the shampoo/conditioner just puts so much crap in your hair, like waxes and such that it causes the tangles to be worse.
When I have a little time to pamper myself I'm going to try some olice oil and honey deep conditioner.
