My sister and I are throwing a bridal shower for my brothers fiance' in a few months. Do any of you have any favorite ideas for showers? Games, food, themes, etc.? There are probably going to be a lot of people at the shower as it's going to be both sides of our family and all of their friends. We're thinking of having a local/favorite restaurant cater the main dish and one or two sides and then have a few family members and close friends help out with salads, deserts and such. Any thoughts and/or ideas would be appreciated

A nice brunch outside (if you can)or inside with real tableclothes etc is always lovely, tea with hats and all, or do something more "country" with sunflowers, etc.
will try to write more later
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

One idea is to mail out a recipe card with each shower invitation. Have each guest fill out the card with their favorite recipe & bring it to the shower. Have a recipe box ready for guests to place their cards. The brides recipe collection will be started with tried & true recipes from close friends & family. This can be a nice way to carry on a family recipe or several for generations that follow.

Oh one other thing... not sure if everyone does this or not, but at my bridal shower, my sis in laws had a paper plate that they attached all the bows from our gifts onto. The plates & all their bows became part of the "Just Married" sign for the back of our get away car.

Excelent ideas ladies, thank you! I have heard of the bows on the paper plate except instead of the car sign I've seen it used as the "boquet" at the wedding rehersal...I'll have to remember that.

Liz- On the same theme as the recipe shower, I have been to a shower where they asked you to bring a different spice with the recipe. I love the recipes I got at mine and use (almost) every one!
Or if you have time, maybe make a family cookbook with pages and pictures of all the grooms side of the family, so the bride will always know who they came from and will have a nice reminder of her "new" family for years to come.
The dollar store comes in handy for inexpensive party goods and you can probably get large bunches of flowers and divide them up for centerpieces. Remember you can use almost any evergreen /leaves from outside to fill your containers first (and it will save you $$$) Canning jars with inexpensive lace tied around it will make great vases.
At one shower we played a trivia game about the bride and got prizes like votive candles, small chocolates, etc...
Your future sister in law is lucky you are doing this for her, have fun!

I like the idea of a brunch--it's early and people can still keep plans if the shower is on a Saturday or Sunday...Catered or keep it simple--tea sandwiches, dips, etc...people LOVE fingerfoods.
I really like that spice idea, considering I cook all the time and they are often costly!
For my bridal shower, each guest was assigned something to bring for a designated time of day beginning at 6:00 am, at hour-2 hour increments (at least that's what I remember them saying). On each card, the time was listed on the envelope..I received the alarm clock we registered for my 6:00 am gift, coffee presses, good coffee and teas and various other fun things for each hour. Each guest was assigned a time--if there were more guests than hours, they just doubled up. I got Waffle makers and various egg items and muffin tins, really lovely toiletries, his and her bath towels that had been hand embellished for am hours, two lunchboxes--his and hers (they were handmade, filled with goodies) and gift cards to bookstores and specialty cafes for lunch while at work, hand embroidered dinner napkins and dishes, stemware for the evening hours. Someone was thoughtful enough to get me monogrammed stationary for the afternoon when I write my "correspondence"....I'm working, so I don't use it all the time, but it does harken back to those days when ladies spent a great deal of time catching up on their letters. For the evening, there was of course, cooking stuff, but also there were gift cards to video stores, and an Aunty made up an "gamenight" package with a couple of board games, decks of cards, popcorn and stuff like that, all I had to do was invite the people over! Of course, my friends got me a few really lovely nighties for the late night!!!
I just really enjoyed the creativity and thoughtfullness of these gifts!!!
Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet. |

I like games a lot and one of the easiest is the "make a word" game... Pick a phrase or the bride's new name (or both bride's and groom's names for more possibilities) and everyone has a set amount of time (2-3 minutes is good) to find as many words of 3 or more letters from those letters as they can. You can change the rules a bit based on what letters you'll be working with or how difficult you want it to be, such as no plurals (good for names containing S) or 4 or more letters....or you only get points for words noone else has, etc...
For my friend's shower we did a tea party at a local vineyard; hats required.

I love to use pansies or other edible flowers to garnish the cake or salads. Borage flowers in the punch would be romantic too.
A thought on the recipes...When I got married, our church group had put recipes in a photo album. It has been a wonderful way to store the recipes (many more have been added) and to remember the thoughtfulness of the group.
A thought regarding Bridal Registries....Taste of Home Entertaining is coming out an online registry this month. I'll be going to Chicago on Saturday for a meeting and will have more details then. Aside from linens and lingerie, we have everything that a bride would want. If you would like to preview an online catalog, just e-mail me.
Have fun planning. I love weddings. Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com |

Liz,
Nothing like posting to a topic late, huh. I was re-reading the posts this morning, and had a few more ideas. All of the ideas that were shared are excellent. I know you will plan a great shower!
You might check the Taste of Home Cookbook series; all of mine have a section for potluck recipes. If you don't want the expense of catering, two or three of you could make enough of whatever one recipe you chose~a good way for family and friends to bond during this already special time. Then, you could have other close family and friends bring salad and dessert. If you chose green salad, everyone could bring an assigned ingredient for the salad. If you chose one dessert, such as strawberry shortcake with whipping cream, everyone who was assigned dessert could bring double what they would normally fix. (just an example). You wouldn't be stuffed, then, from so many choices!
Will it be inside or outside? If it is spring or summer, outdoors would be super easy to decorate, especially when mother nature is blooming in full force. Mary Janes book has LOTS of pictures and ideas from Meggie's wedding; you could probably get some ideas from there.
I know it is a wedding shower~but, at my place, any type of celebration, especially big ones with extended family and friends, is an occasion for everyone, both young and old, to forget their inhibitions and play softball or volleyball.
You can also ask the bride and groom a set of questions. Write down their answers. Then, ask all the guests the same questions. Give them one of the answers (either for the bride or the groom), and have them write down who they think the answer belongs to.
Dollar General Store here is a great source for prizes/gifts. My girls were planning a birthday surprise party and found body butter for $1 that smells great, picture frames that are absolutely adorable for $l, and scented jar candles for $.75 each. You could use gifts like these as part of your decorations, as well as giving them as prizes. This saves money, too.
I know you will do great at this. Once you start planning, it kind of takes on a life of its own and you just have to roll with it!
