Zoe has thrush, and as her lunch counter, so do I. I am taking yarrow and echinacea, and she is taking echinacea. Does anyone know of anything else we can do? She had a fever last night with it and her mouth is awful sore, so she has been eating sherbet because anything else hurts her mouth :( I broke out the tylenol for her just to bring the fever down and it is gone now, but she is one hurting little girl. Any suggestions?

Gentian Violet is used to cure thrush.
It works great, but turns your mouth purple!!!!

I second the gentian violet...but beware, it stains everything, and I mean everything...so you might want to wear your oldest nursing bras for a day or two...
Tip: swab her mouth with it while she is in a bath.
You can buy it at a pharmacy, and even off the shelf at discount stores sometimes like Walmart or KMart, it is pretty cheap for a little 2oz. bottle and it goes a long way.
Here what I do for thrush...Emme and I passed it back and forth for a while until I got it under control...
1. Gentian Violet
2. Acidophilus for Mama and for Babe (I buy a good liquid at the heath food storeand give it 4x a day)
3. Boil her forks and spoons, sipper cups, etc..everything she puts in her mouth.
4. Stay away from sugar and yeasty foods like bread, for her and you, this feeds the yeast.
5. Beware, a yeast infection that gets into your milk ducts hurts like the dickens!

oh let me tell you, the pain when she latches on, oh my goodness, I have never had pain like this with her nursing! I gave her her echinacea and she screamed in pain. She is having a hard time eating anything, and you can tell she is hungry, but she is hesitant because it hurts her poor little mouth. My nips are complete with milk blisters and red and flaky. oh it hurts, but only when she latches on, so for that much I am glad. We have never had it before, I didn't even have it with Grace!

I have always heard that if you have a child who suffers with thrush to have someone blow in the child's mouth that has never seen his or her father. I don't know personally if it works, just have heard it my whole life, but my daughter's friend's mother keeps foster children and her baby had a case of thrush. She asked one of the foster children who had never seen his father to blow in the baby's mouth and she claims it cleared the thrush up. Whether it works or not, I just know what she said and I know it is one of those old timey remedies that has always been passed through my family. Luckily, my children never suffered with thrush. Other people I know have used the purple stuff with success.

The gentian violet does help, but you need to put some on your nipples as well. Also make sure you wash your bras in really hot water or it will just grow inside them........change them every day until it clears up. New toothbrushes - especially if you have it in your mouth or hers if she uses one yet.

Have you ever heard of Goldren Root? It is a root that looks similar to a golden ebroidery thread. Anyway it is picked below trees. You would steap it like tea, and rinse the mouth out with it. My daughter had thrush years ago, and when my mother told me of this, I tried it. My daughter was cleared up within 2 days (REALLY!).

| My older daughter had this when she was a baby (30 years ago). We did the violet thing & sterilized everything! The doc said that it is a fungus, so it just keeps growing on things she's had in her mouth that aren't sterilized. And, we all know at that age, everything goes into the mouth! I even washed her sheets & scrubbed down the crib mattress every night trying to kill the stuff. Unfortunately, it ended up taking several months to go away. My prayers go up for you and your little Zoe. It's truly miserable!! Kathy |

I'm not usually for going the doctor route, but I have a daughter who had this when she was younger; they gave her liquid nystatin for her mouth, and I got ointment nystatin for my nipples. One other thing you can do for your nipples between nursing (just gently wipe down before you nurse with a tiny bit of soapy warm water) is yeast infection cream they have over the counter for regular vaginal yeast infections. My pediatrician said this works for mom. I couldn't get rid of her thrush without the liquid nystatin. Just a thought because you are both so miserable.

I will be praying for you and your little one. I too had a miserable time with nursing and thrush. We used the gentian violet and it worked great. Let us know how you are doing.

We are both recovering. She has a few mil blisters left, but she can eat now and not hurt, she is sleeping normally instead of needing to be RIGHT ON ME, which is fine, but when you have to get some things done and there is only one position the babe will sleep, and it requires you to be on your back-it doesn't work out so well.
She is doing waay better though! Thanks for all the advice and help and well wishes!!

I'm so sorry...it's the pits. My 3 year grand-daughter just got it too.
In addition to what Kate suggested I told my daughter to make a pau D'Arco decotion (simmered tea from the pau D'arco bark) It tastes good but can be used to add to frozen juice concetrates instead of water. Also no sugar. Nursing mom's can drink the tea in abundance.
Understanding that your intestal track is like a flower garden .... all the flowers died except one or two strains (usually following anti-bacotics, diarehha, over-dose of sugar, etc.) These strains left over grow and take over the intestal track like morning glories. Then when they bloom the yeast over-flows the body & comes out the mouth, skin or even other special parts.
So you're blooming.
I hope this analogy is understandable. It is a cycle that can be broken by doing what Kate suggested, pau d'arco & tea tree oil, neem, etc.

thrush is a yeast infection i beleive so maybe yogart and buttermilk will help. the old wives tale that i knew is that the 7th daughter of a man who had never seen her could blow in the mouth with a child with thrush and it would go away. more than likely she got thrush.
