Hi Everyone! I just wanted to remind you that next Sunday will be our Apple Pie Sunday celebration here at MJF!! It is Sunday, September 24 so mark your calendars. Please share here any of your ideas, favorite recipes or traditions with apple pie. We would all enjoy hearing about what you like!
My favorite is just a traditional two crust pie with lots of apple filling. Yum, it makes my mouth water just thinking about that now!! I use a tart firm apple and usually mix and match my apples for a rich flavor. Plus, I am definitely one of those who loves sharp cheddar cheese on my pie instead of ice cream or whipped cream. Like the saying goes, a pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze! Plus I love, love, love apple pie for breakfast. Do you??
Let's get planning and I can't wait to hear your mouth watering plans for our Apple Pie Sunday next weekend!

.jpg?v 15706995)
I have my apples, cheddar cheese and butter bought and ready to make my pie for tomorrow!!
Wishing all of you a very HAPPY APPLE PIE SUNDAY how ever you choose to celebrate! Let's all leave our comments on recipes that we tried and how they turned out. I have a feeling there will be lots of apple goodness filling Farmgirl Homes this weekend! Enjoy whatever apple delight you decide to eat!!

Hi Winnie! I decided instead of apple pie this year I am going to make my grandmothers apple pandowdy recipe. I'm marking my calendar now so I won't forget to get it made.

Apple season is here!! I really love to make Danish Apple Bars. An apple pie on a cookie sheet! I think apple pie is really best, just slightly warm. Yum My sister in law, my mom and my self did make apple dumplings today. So good.

Thanks for the reminder Winnie! It would be nice if everyone shared their favorite apple recipe (Michele!).
I'm going to bake Nancy Fuller's (Farmhouse Rules) Just the BEST Apple Pie. She wasn't kidding when she named it that, it's the BEST!

Dawn, I love Nancy Fuller's Food Network shows and I am going to look up her recipe for apple pie. No doubt it is a winner! Thanks for the idea.
Hehehe, Denise, you know the saying, An Apple a Day keeps the Doctor away, so if you start making apple things today, you can consider it a way to get more apples in your diet!! Along with the sugar and other calories , but hey, the Apple Festival and Apple Pie Sunday only comes once a year!!! Bake On!

I haven't decided what I'm making yet. I am leaning more towards an apple crisp instead of an apple pie. My husband doesn't like apples so I need to stick with something the boys and I can finish before it goes bad. Plus I love apple crisp!

You can't go wrong with Apple crisp in my opinion! I love that dish both warm and cold. It is also a terrific breakfast dish with the oatmeal topping. Pour a little milk over the top and you have a yummy cold delicious treat.

So many goodies to make with apples. Have fun deciding everyone. I am thinking that the apple pie in the cast iron skillet looks like a great idea.

We're thinking warm apple crisp with fresh raspberries thrown in, topped with homemade ice cream. I'm excited for today (the reason I'm up early working on my next book due next week) because my daughter, granddaughters and I are going to have a sewing day to celebrate. A dear friend of mine gifted four Featherweight sewing machines to each of my four grandgirls, so today we're going to fire them up for the first time and teach the girls how to sew on them. They want to sew blankets.
You probably can't see it from this photo, but our Apple Pie Sunday Farmgirl (very old heirloom) mascot tree is loaded this year. Last year's TLC pruning paid off, plus I've been watering it all summer.

Enjoy the day today and eat lots of apple anything and everything. Your ideas sound wonderful. Wouldn't a movable feast be grand?

Apple Pandowdy came out well. Added a scoop of vanilla to it. Some, added a bit more than a scoop to their's. Very tasty warm. I just popped it in after the oven was turned off from dinner and it was perfect by the time we had dessert..jpg?v 8226614)

Wow, MaryJane, our mascot apple tree is looking fantastic with such a bountiful harvest this year. There are plenty of apples for canning, apple butter, eating fresh and whatever else you decide. Enjoy one for me!!
Here is my apple pie fresh from the oven and it smells soooooo good! I used the Apple pie filling recipe from MaryJane's new Cast Iron Cookbook for mini apple pies. Instead of her cookie crust, I just used a traditional pie crust recipe. For apples, I used some new crop Honey Crisp that were in the local grocery store this weekend. Their natural tartness and juiciness seemed like a good choice. I tasted them before I put them in the crust and they tasted really good with a little sugar and the spices. We will be enjoying it later for dessert with my extra sharp Vermont Cheddar Cheese.
Lots of apple goodness going to be enjoyed today!
I found this cute saying last week on a Maine New England blog that I follow that seems fitting for Apple Pie Sunday. The blog post was about an apple pie recipe and who who still eats apple pie for breakfast. The comments were hilarious as followers replied with resounding YES! and with Cheddar Cheese!
Works for me way down here in the deep South!! LOL!!!
To foreigners, a Yankee is an American. To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner. To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner. To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander. To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter. And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast. - Attributed to E.B. White

Denise, your Apple Pandowdy looks yummy with that light brown fluffy biscuit topping. I bet there were no leftovers!! LOL!!
Michele, your cast iron skillet apple pie looks fantastic and I bet it won't last very long either once everyone digs in!

I LOVE apple crisp and usually make it several times during apple season! Crunchy topping, served warm with ice cream. I didn't make a pie or crisp for today, but I DID make an apple cake to take to our son's house to share with his caregiver and housemates. I had gotten a package of fruit from the freezer yesterday thinking it was apples. Turned out it was pears, but I got out some apples too and put it all in the cake. Will serve with ice cream.
VERY SAD THING THIS YEAR! Due to a late freeze this spring our area, there are NO apples this year! There were NO cherries, NO apricots, NO peaches, NO pears, NO plums! It's such a disappointment! Fortunately, we put lots of apples and applesauce in the freezer last year! Hope what we have lasts and next year is a better fruit year! CJ

Winnie, love that little ditty. Especially since I'm from the northeast and we never thought it odd to eat pie for breakfast! Your pie looks yummy by the way! Sounds like everyone is enjoying some apple goodness today.

Winnie, thank you for the kind words about my pie. The beautiful quilted mat was made by my talented Windy Pines cousin, Michele. I love using it in the fall and winter.
Keep those pies coming!
